Last year was my first time ever being in the United States. I finished my senior year of high school in Lake Placid, New York. That was probably one of best experiences in my life. I meet people from all over the world and made friendships that will last a lifetime. National Sports Academy is where I attended school my senior year, this school was for hockey players only. We did everything as a group, went to classes, practiced together, lived and ate together. There were also many international students in that school and the only thing that everybody complained about was food. It seemed like everything in United States is just unhealthy fast food. During my time at Lake Placid and even now, I find myself falling into these bad habits. The problem with fast food is the amount of calories in every meal. According to the study in the same New York Times article, “The study found that most teenagers underestimated the number of calories they were consuming, some by up to 466 calories.’. But, if someone asked you how many calories are in a single McDonalds Big Mac, what would you guess? 150 calories? 200? 300? No, the answer is 563 per Big Mac, that is not even including fries and a drink. Therefore, a full meal at a fast food establishment, like McDonalds, contains around 1,313 calories. The suggested amount of calories for an active teenage boy is anywhere from 2,600-3,200 calories a day. So consuming one meal at a fast food establishment takes up about half of the calories you can take in for the

For example, a bundle at McDonald’s can feed up to four people at one time, and it only costs about fifteen dollars! So, in the long run, it is just easier to go pick up some fast food rather than wasting your time cooking an actual meal. Lastly, even though fast food is very cheap and in every corner, it is not healthy at all. Studies have proven that a person that ate McDonald’s for his meals for a full month ended up having some serious health problems. In conclusion, even though it is very easy to access and very cheap, fast food has some serious health issues and is very harmful.
Constantly ordering food and wanting it fast can cause bad eating habits. Unhealthy eating habits are a huge health issue for college students. “When fast food frequently replaces nutritious foods in your diet, it can lead to poor nutrition, poor health, and weight gain” (Carey and Pietrangelo). Buying food from McDonalds instead of cooking increases more study time, but that does not mean everything will be fine. Consuming a big mac fills up the calories but does not allow the correct vitamins and nutrients.
Ask a teenager what their favorite fast food restaurant is and most of them will probably say McDonalds. "McDonalds operates approx. 30,000 restaurants on 6 continents, and feeds about 46 million people in a single day! In the U.S. alone, McDonalds accounts for 43% of the fast food market." Manhattan alone contains 82 restaurants packed into the island (Super Size Me). McDonalds has been criticized by the media and other people for offering too many unhealthy choices on their menu, therefore leading to obesity in America. Eating too much McDonalds, or any other fatty food, will give you many long term health problems.
Fast food has been a very common solution for on the go eating because a restaurant is located at almost every corner and the convenience of drive thrus give people the luxury of not even having to get out of their car. Sutter Health indicates that over 25 percent of Americans consume fast food daily. It is not a secret that fast food has been blamed for being one of the major causes of obesity. This brings up the question how exactly does fast food affect specifically your everyday activities when it is consumed. Numerous arguments have been made about how fast food can hinder your daily progress and why it should be avoided or maybe be eaten but only in moderation.

Today marks the date of July 30th, 2015. We have Apple Watches, Google Glasses, High Definition TV’s, Gluten-Free food, and even dairy-free ice cream (Larsen). Words that were the anthem of my youth, now my peers have taken these words to heart and now spend their recreational time filling their bodies with saturated fats. Unsurprisingly fast food restaurants are a massive contribution to obesity within children. The most popular food at McDonalds are the chips however, the smallest portion of chips you can buy comes in at a staggering 237 calories and that’s just the smallest portion. The largest portion contains a massive 444 calories. When you consider this is normally a side portion you can see how quickly the calories add up.
