Animals have been human companions for many centuries providing a source of peace and calm to those around them; however the use of animals in a structured therapy environment is a fairly recent phenomenon. Animal therapy involves bringing animals into the healing process, which can has been proven effective in aiding many types of people. Whether it be a dog, cat, bird, rabbit, or even a horse, all types of animals can be trained to help the emotional and physical health of people in simple and extraordinary ways. The use of animal therapy with highly trained animals can benefit the emotional and physical health of a variety of people, including children, the elderly, and individuals with unique circumstances. Healing can take many different forms, such as companionship for a child, throwing a ball for a dog, students petting dogs before a test, or even simply stroking a soft animal. Animal therapy is a newly researched form of healing. Animal therapy was established by the Delta Society in 1977 as an official way of providing therapy. The Delta Society was first organized as a way of helping the public based upon the fact that most people in the world knew that an animal could help them in some way, but, the Delta Society has continued to provide conclusive research and programs to prove the validity of using animals in therapy. For approximately 30 years, the organization has provided the official definitions for the two different animal therapy approaches. The two different programs are Animal Assisted Therapy and Animal Assisted Activities. The official definition of Animal Assisted Activities or (AAA), is by the Delta Society stated in Animal-Assisted Brief Therapy: A Solution-Focused Approach, which defines AAA as an event... ... middle of paper ... ... Equine-assisted therapy, also known as equine therapy or equestrian therapy, is a type of animal-assisted therapy intended to teach, counsel, and/or rehabilitate people with disabilities. This type of experiential therapy includes activities such as: grooming and caring for, haltering and leading, tacking up, and riding horses. Each of those activities foster interactions between the rider or patient, and horse, building a bond between the human and horse. In a typical equestrian therapy setting, usually a dedicated therapeutic barn, a mental health professional and/or an “equine therapist can observe and interact with the patient in order to identify behavior patterns and process thoughts and emotions” (“What Is Equine Therapy?”). What would the world be like if there was no vaccine for polio? If there was no discovery of insulin? Thanks to animal research we don’t have to live without vaccines or insulin. Animal research is a topic debated everyday around the world. Some argue it is cruel to put animals through experiments that animals have no voice in what is being done to them. Others argue that animal testing is good because it collects a lot of information and helps with surgical techniques. I believe that without animal testing we would never know what we know now. Animal testing for medical research is necessary if there are no other alternatives because it allows for advances in medicine, provides treatments for people with diseases, it eliminates human suffering, and it also has helped treat diseases in animals. Research has been done in the area of human-animal companionship and security, and stress management. Due to the relative newness of this field and the difficulties in studying it, most research has been concentrated on the elderly, specifically, institutionalized elderly. Pets have been introduced into these settings in order to minimize the negative consequences of institutionalization. Most research has been conducted on the extreme ends of the continuum, either very brief visitation or therapy of resident pets studies (Wrinkler 216).
Kristin found out that Bea was from a laboratory and decided to give her a loving home. In the first years of Bea’s life she was mute, pathologically fearful, and terrorized from the trauma she experienced for the laboratories. She even shook when someone approached her, and rolled over and urinated every time a man was around. When Kristin would take Bea to the vet she would shake uncontrollably with fear. This just goes to show how the trauma from these animal laboratories effects the animals. Luckily, from the love and care from Kristin Bea transformed into a healthy dog without fear of her new owners or veterinarians. This story shows that these animals need love, attention, and care that they are clearly not getting at the laboratories. (Williams, and

The Animal Welfare act was created in 1996 and it 's main purpose was to establish a licensing system for animal dealers and laboratories that use dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, or non-human primates. This was also done in Great Britain in the 1960 's which was used to calm the debate of using animals in science. This act is the only federal law in the United States that is regulating the treatment of animals in research. Some say that this isn 't enough to protect the animals in testing labs. David Favre states that, "This is a federal law of limited purpose and scope." He goes on to say that, it does not deal with all species of animals, as do most state anti-cruelty laws. Instead, the law focuses upon several very specific activities that have been shown in the past to be potential areas of animal abuse and that have a nationwide aspect to them (Favre,

“A dog is a man’s best friend” goes much deeper than the phrase might initially imply. Recently many medical journals have begun to identify with the many and varied benefits of pet ownership. Men have always relied upon animals for work, transportation, and survival. As times have changed, man has begun to appreciate a different bond with animals. Gone are the days of animals running free outside around the homestead, for now animals are allowed inside and are considered by many to be an integral part of our daily lives! Medical studies have found that animals have a much greater intelligence level than originally thought. Through proper training and experience, animals are not only household pets, but also are becoming an accepted form of medical treatment.
Lower stress levels are shown by parents who have excellent parent-school relationships and who engaged in advocacy activities (Burke & Hodapp 2014). Parents who didn’t have strong partnerships with their child’s school showed higher levels of maternal stress (Burke & Hodapp 2014). Although they experience loads of stress, they also experience a lot of happiness with every successful thing their child accomplishes (Jovanova & Radojichikj 2013). The authors are trying to shine light and inform people how a family can be impacted by such a thing.
In the video,“Wounded Warriors, Healing Hounds” the owner of a Veterans Best Friend trains dogs and uses them to help veterans with PTSD. These dogs use different tactics to tell their owner someone is approaching them so the owner does not lose it and have a violent episode that can hurt someone in public.
