HEALTH AND SAFETY
Generally:
Health and Safety regulations and procedures intended to prevent accident or injury in workplaces or public environments. The protocols are very important for this methanol producing plant. This is basically due to the fact that the chemicals used in the plant are very harsh and hazardous. It is very important to take into consideration the necessary procedures to avoid possible hazards and have control over them as they occur.
Causes:
Different types of hazards could occur while working on a methanol producing plant. These hazards are dangerous and can provoke immediate effects as they occur and should be avoided in the best way possible.

• Gases produced when methanol is burnt can be seriously damaging to the human body when inhaled.
• Risk of electrocution since there is electricity involved. This could happen due to carelessness.
• Carelessness around wiring can lead to falls and fractures or to severe injuries that can lead to death.
Preventive measures.
Precautions or preventive measures should be taken to avoid and prevent any hazards while working on the plant. Preventive measures should be enforced as soon as any staff is taken in or employed at a work place.

• The staff or workers employed should be reminded regularly of the importance of the health and safety protocols.
• Lab coats or safety uniforms must be worn at all times while around the plant or in the industry in general.
• Gloves and goggles must also be worn at all times.
• A well covered pair of shoes must also be worn to avoid spillage on the skin and to avoid falls and fractures due to spillage on the floors.
• In the case of any spillage on the floor, a wet sign should be put up to warn staff of the impending

After evaluating the information provided in our assessment scenario, methanol poses the greatest risk of fire and explosion, at least in my opinion. I came to this conclusion because methanol has a higher vapor pressure when compared to toluene (96 mmHg verses 22 mmHg). “Liquids with low boiling points have comparatively higher vapor pressures, because they evaporate readily at room temperature, which unfortunately, can make them volatile. Consequently, liquids with higher boiling points result in lower vapor pressure since they evaporate slower” (Meyer, 2014, p. 53). Vapor pressure is defined as “the pressure exerted by the vapor in equilibrium with its liquid” (Meyer, 2014, p. 53).

Hence, it is critical that health care workers change gloves during any activity that has been assessed as carrying a risk of exposure to body substances, secretions, excretions, and blood (Curchoe et al.,
Understanding the standard necessities of protection, gives an individual the knowledge to know efficient ways to protect themselves against microbes. It is also good to know that OSHA provides information for the selection of proper equipment. The process of how to safely remove ones attire is explained in OSHA. However, an induvial should keep in mind that the garment they use as well as the masks, goggles and gloves are infested with microbes during the course of the day since they are most likely splattered with fluids.
