Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is the most widely known civil rights activist of the 1960s. Although he most famous for his I Have a Dream speech, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote several more influential speeches for the Civil Rights Movement – an American movement that sought to extend equal rights to all U.S. citizens. During his lifetime, he was known for practicing nonviolence in the hopes to obtain social and economic equality of all African Americans. While this equality exists amongst the races today, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did not get to see the fulfillment of his dream. On April 4, 1968, he was assassinated on the balcony of his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee.
Synagogues were set on fire and burnt to the ground as firemen stood at standby watching. They would interfere and take action only to prevent the fire from spreading to non-Jewish buildings while leaving the Jewish buildings to burn. Jewish businesses were either burnt down or had their windows broken. In the majority of the cases, both occurred when they were destroyed. While illegal, looting took place in many cases as well. That is where the name Kristallnacht comes from, as it roughly means, “night of broken glass.” The streets were literally strewn with shards of broken glass from the destructive attacks. Around 25,000 to 30,000 men were arrested and taken to concentration camps for being Jewish. In the concentration camps, they would often be brutalized and sometimes randomly chosen to be beaten to death. German official hoped that the trip to the concentration camp would “break their resistance and thereby force them to immigrate.” (The Danish Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies) At that time, the ‘Final Solution’ of the Third Reich had not been created and implemented. Kristallnacht left nothing but the few remaining items of the victims along with the ruins of their homes, their religious buildings, and their businesses. Reinhard Heydrich reported to Hermann Goering after the events of November 9th,
Kristallnacht was also referred to as “the night of the broken glass” because of all the broken windows from the Jewish houses and shops. In “Night”, Kristallnacht was described as a night of anti-Jewish riots. During this time Jewish homes were robbed, synagogues burned, Jewish businesses destroyed, and many Jews were, arrested, tortured, beaten, or killed. A tax was then imposed by the government on the Jews. They were being forced to pay for Kristallnacht property damage.
The events which happened between the 9th and 10th November are known as Kristallnacht. Kristallnacht is known more commonly as night of broken glass, which describes what happened best, with Jewish shops and synagogues all over Germany and Austria in the big cities and small towns were looted, vandalised or burnt down.
We have been given a multitude of chances to take the lessons of our ancestors in stride and better ourselves from their experiences, but instead we choose to neglect our lessons and relapse into a society fueled by hatred. The act of dehumanization has been an ongoing reoccurrence throughout our tarnished history. It may change, and evolve into new levels of hatred. It has no bias; it will choose its victims between race, sex, social levels and many other faucets that most of us are born into. In short, the historical lessons of this course have taught me that if we wish to provide a better future for not only our generation but also the generations that are to follow us, then we must change the way that we treat others who are different than us. The best way we can achieve this goal is to learn from the lessons that have been so prevalent throughout our
November 9th, 1938: The precursor to the Holocaust or the start of it itself? In either case, by November 11th––with thousands of Jewish stores looted and/ or destroyed, several hundred synagogues burned down, and houses vandalized and robbed––the appearance of war had seemingly passed through Central Germany. Kristallnacht, otherwise known as the “Night of Broken Glass”, was one the events that most likely struck fear into all the hearts and minds of the Jewish family's within Hitler's Third Reich. The atrocities committed against a whole population within a region were all caused by one young man's actions, which shows how ruthless yet organized the Nazi regime truly was. Oppressing Jews was the Nazi's way of showing Germany who was in control and those against it would be silenced in one way or another.
It is told that on the night of November 9 and early November 10, 1938, Nazis incited a pogrom against the Jewish in Austria and Germany. It is termed, “Kristallnact” (“Night of Broken Glass). This night of violence included pillaging and burning of synagogues, breaking of the windows in Jewish owned businesses, looting, and physically attacking of Jewish people. Approximately, 30,000...
The famous speech, “ I Have a Dream”, was held in 1963 by a powerful leader of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s. He was born January 15,1929 the son of an Atlanta Pastor. Martin Luther King Jr. always insisted on nonviolent resistance and always tried to persuade others with his nonviolent beliefs. In 1963, King spoke from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and almost 200,000 people attended his speech. All his listeners were Civil Rights supporters who rallied behind him and the people who watched his appearance on television. King traveled the country making speeches and inspiring people to become involved in the Civil Rights Movement. He organized non violent student sit-ins and fought for the rights of the black population.
The Kristallnacht was said to be the beginning of the Holocaust and what started the Voyage of the St. Louis. It was a bad way to start off the boarding and sailing of the St. Louis. The Kristallnacht also referred as the “Night of Crystal” or the “Night of Broken Glass” destroyed about 7,000 homes and hundreds of synagogues in Germany. The Nazi troops arrested thousands of people in
Hatred provokes many individuals to transform into hideous versions of themselves. Their actions, fueled by this hatred may be demonstrated negatively or positively in society. Authors Samira Ahmed in Love, Hate & Other Filters and Angie Thomas in The Hate U Give, elaborate on this central idea. In Love, Hate & Other Filters, Maya, the protagonist, learns to cope with the discrimination she faces in order to move forward with her life. In The Hate U Give, Starr, the main character, discovers how to use the racism she endures to her benefit.
Bullying does not have a standard definition. Bullying can be anything from calling someone else names, beating them up just for the fun of it, to texting or messaging them on the internet or any mobile device. Any person can be the victim of bullying, not just children. Bullying causes many issues, physically, emotionally, and mentally, not only for the victim, but for their entire families as well. Bullies have many different reasons as to why they start bullying someone else. The actions done to the victim leaves them with only a few options on how to stop being bullied. How they handle it is always different.
