The Harry Potter series is known to be a top seller in fanfiction. It has triumphantly captured the attention and imagination of children and adults nationwide. However, some readers may not find this reading very innocent and fun. Some individuals on the other hand have believed that the Harry Potter series is a controversial novel that should not be taught due to its Christian imagery. I however, believe that the Harry Potter series is not deeming and shows no negative claim on the Christian religion.
The Harry Potter series shows some similarities to Christianity in how a young orphan child defeats the odds and save the world. Of course it is not like the bible, but it has imagery of folk tales and examples of how magic can relate to religion

Even though they are enemies, both Harry and Lord Voldemort are quite similar. They are both orphans who lost their parents and were abused. Their parents were also different making them different as well. Lord Voldemort original name is Tom Riddle, was happy when he found out he was a wizard. He knew he was special. But Harry on the other side was not, he did not want to be special. But Tom was evil with his powers once he was aware of his wizardry. He possesses dark magic. Lord Voldemort wanted to be more powerful than death itself. He was power hungry driven and wanted to be invincible. Professor Snape represents the brother who was madly in love with a girl who died and wanted to bring back. Professor Snape never really obtained the stone but he had a lost that impacted his craze. When Snape lost the love of his life Lily, Harry mother, he used that drive to help Harry a boy he could not stand in order to save the world. Harry Potter had the invisible cloak because it was passed down to him from his father. Harry’s father scarified himself in order to pass the cloak down to him. His humility showed Harry that love is the most important magic there is and can save the
How did Harry Potter effect children in a positive way? What elements found within the series could be factors of this influence? Are there Christian elements to be found within Harry Potter? In order to answer these questions, I plan to research interviews with the author of Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling, the views of the church, and those of Harry’s supporters. The two central sources that I plan to use are The Bible and Harry Potter itself. The Bible will mainly be used in order to portray the views of the church, while Harry Potter will provide the basis of the entire argument. Some other sources that I plan to utilize include books by John Granger such as “Looking for God in Harry Potter” and “The Hidden Key to Harry Potter,” which analyze Harry Potter, and interviews and articles from several different viewpoints. I also plan to research how literacy rates have changed since the release in the series, and teachers’ views on the influence of Harry Potter on their students’ reading. The only problem that I can foresee is the fact that the Bible states that witchcraft is of Satan, but with logic and research on the subject, I should be able to dispute this
In the books, we have Gilgamesh, a King of Uruk and hero, on the hunt for immortality due to his fear of mortality. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Voldemort is the main antagonist in the Harry Potter series, who, like Gilgamesh, is seeking immortality to avoid death and or being killed. When we draw a comparison between the two, the desire and motivation behind the need for immortality has not changed. Be it a ten years ago, or even a few thousand, people have expressed
Tom Riddle, AKA Lord Voldemort, was a half-blood prince known to be the most powerful dark wizard of all time. Riddle came from a wealthy muggle father Tom Riddle Senior and mother witch Merope Gaunt, who died shortly after Tom was born. Tom’s father left shortly after Merope found out she was expecting and left him the heir of Slytherin. Tom was raised in a muggle orphanage and when he became of age attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He was placed in the Slytherin house, the most powerful house, and was the most talented student to ever attend Hogwarts. After Hogwarts Tom went on to work at Borgin and Burkes for a brief time before he disappeared for many years.
...ave evolved about the subject matter of these books. The greatest controversy, though, centers on the series’ religious references, which have caused many parents to despise the “immoral” concepts of the stories and forbid their children from reading these books. Such people feel that Rowling promotes paganism through the magic performed by the characters, and promotes evil through various connections to Satan. Still, Harry Potter does not reflect the practices of Wicca and good always overpowers evil in the end; therefore, we should not be concerned with the effects of the series on children, or even adults. After all, readers have been enjoying stories containing magical references for centuries and humanity has not suffered because of it. Harry Potter is just another magical story and should be enjoyed, rather than judged because of its controversial references.
Harry has spent all summer waiting to hear news about Lord Voldemort, a evil wizard that Harry saw return the year before, but nobody believes him. One evening after listening to news ,he decides to go for a walk. He then sees his cousin, who he lives with and hates. They then get in a fight and Harry pulls out his wand and at that exact moment two dementors attack them. Dudley thinks Harry is attacking him so he punches Harry. Harry then heroically saves them both by producing a patronus and driving away the dementors.
Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy is set in a pre-Christian world. Hence it cannot adopt an explicit Christianity. Nonetheless it can, and does, shadow Christianity just as the Old Testament pre-shadowed the New, although admittedly Tolkien's is a post-view set as a pre-view. The Christian types to be found in The Lord of the Rings which we will examine are of two sorts: shared world view and shared symbols.
...y for the lunatic fringes of my own religion” (“'Harry Potter' Author J.K. Rowling Opens Up About Books' Christian Imagery”).
Just to quickly run through the two previous books; Harry Potter is a wizard, who’s parents were killed by the worst dark wizard ever known. The reason why Harry Potter is still around, is because Lord Voldemort failed to kill Harry. His spell hit Harry, but then backfired on Voldemort taking all of his powers with him. Harry is so famous for two things. Withstanding the powers of Lord Voldemort, and, taking him back in to the underworld in hiding. In the first book, Harry receives a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He’s eventually allowed to go, and spends the next six months there learning magic, getting into trouble, and trying to solve mysteries of his past, and the school. In the second book, Harry goes back to his second year at Hogwarts, and gets into more trouble, figures out many astonishing mysteries and learns loads more magic. His best friends in the two books consist of Ron and Hermione (two of his fellow wizard students) and Hagrid the gamekeeper who was expelled from Hogwarts but allowed a job as the gamekeeper.
In conclusion, Christianity and Judaism are two very similar but in many ways different religions. The two share a belief in the old testament and also share many important laws. Christians and Jews come to disagreements over the interpretation of God and the perception of Jesus and they also fight over the new testament. I believe that both religions have valuable teachings and that they learn from each other in many ways, I also believe that the two religions share such close roots that it is impossible to prevent an overlap in beliefs at some point. And finally, I think that Christianity and Judaism are more similar than people think.
Rowling’s use of the Patronus as a manifestation of an individual’s identity represents the idea that while we crave a protector and seek out someone who will save us, in the end we must rely on ourselves. Harry craved a protector in the form of his father. In the end of Prisoner of Azkaban he waits for his father to appear, to cast the Patronus charm and save him and Sirius. While he waits, he has a moment of realization about his own agency, “no one was coming to help this time – And then it hit him… He hadn’t seen his father – he had seen himself” (411). Although Harry wishes for his father, even tries to rationalize that his savior was his father, he knew he had to act. Rowling in the ends, supports Harry’s agency here, he had to save himself and he goes on throughout this book and the entire series saving others even though
At this moment, Harry becomes aware of the fact that he is Voldemort’s bondsman, because this is the first time they meet and confront one another. Hegel says “When two such beings confront each other, each attempts to prove itself through a life or death-and-struggle.” At this moment Peter Pettigrew kills Cedric Diggory as Harry watches. Voldemort is resurrected and Harry sees him for the first time. Harry faces a life-and-death struggle of physical death at this moment. Harry fulfills Hegel’s second element when he battles Voldemort while feeling desperately afraid of dying. His ability to perform spells and survive a fight with Voldemort is his creative work. A battle occurs between Harry and Voldemort, where Harry is able to outlast Voldemort, his master, until he is too weak to keep
...character and even Beowulf when he dies. His last words seemed considerate instead of selfish. Although Harry is a hero he still has authority over him because of his age, unlike Beowulf who is the son of a king and is older. Harry’s battles didn’t just involve physically fighting like Beowulf’s did. He had to find weaknesses in the Dark Lord and use them against him to finally kill Voldermort after several fights. In the end of both tales good triumphs over evil and the wicked is ultimately defeated perpetually. Harry goes on to live an honorable life among his friends, but Beowulf dies a noble man for the welfare of his people giving his throne to someone else deserving. Even though both endings are concluded in somewhat of a sad note, they both give you a sense of accomplishment because of the overall victory over what used to rule the world they lived in.

...ck and a potential pitfall. Someone full of hate and greed, such as Tom Marvolo Riddle, who has never known it even once in their entire life, cannot understand its full magical power. Love is one of the hardest and strongest kinds of magic and is perhaps the fabric that holds the wizarding world of Harry Potter together. Dumbledore says to Harry “Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love” (Harry Potter and the Deathly Halllows 722). The series stresses that it is important to love. It is obvious throughout the series that Harry embraces his history and duty by accepting the soul-purifying act of practicing self-sacrificial love. It is no surprise that the Harry Potter series is so widely in a time of fear, uncertainty, and unrest. Harry defeats evil not by fearing it, but by embracing it and overcoming it with love.
But what makes Harry so special is the fact that when Voldemort had attempted to kill him too, something had saved him. Instead the curse had rebounded and Voldemort lost all his powers. Famed in the wizarding world as The Boy Who Lived, Harry embarks on a magical journey in his years at Hogwarts with his two friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The first three books- Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber Of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Azkaban- mostly lays down the details of the
