Likewise Muslim consumers want assurances that the food they buy and eat are halal of the same quality and safety when consumed as when manufactured. They want to be able to trust that the food they buy is halal, which means being able to trust the food. However, at the same time the food industry is buffeted by head winds in many areas, such as detection of swine’s DNA in the coffee and a halal certified butter founded containing prohibited elements (swine’s DNA), famous halal certified chocolate founded containing prohibited elements (swine’s DNA) and never-ending istihalah ruling. Smithfield Foods is a forward-thinking company that likes to be the industry leader. The main way to for them to achieve and maintain this goal is to utilize both the Six Sigma and lean philosophies. Merging lean with Six Sigma provides the company “a richer set of tools, particularly those associated with the define, measure and analyze phases. Likewise, the lean tools nicely complement the traditional Six Sigma tools and methodologies” (Meredith, p. 198). Smithfield needs the help of employees to keep these process improvements in motion and to make sure the improvements that have been implemented are actually effective. Almost every angle of the food industry can be considered dangerous. It is dangerous to make the food, as a meatpacking job is one that is viewed as having abnormally high risks; however when the food is handed over a counter on a tray or prepared in a family of four’s kitchen, it poses a huge risk to humankind. Foodborne illnesses are all too common and almost everybody has the possiblity of contracting a foodborne illness. These are life threatening diseases that need to be monitored and regulated; therefore the enforcement of government regulations in the fast food industry could potentially save many lives that are lost annually due to the numerous factors that need regulation.
Furthermore, food safety is a major issue in the United States. Foodborne illness has caused an estimated 1 and 6 Americans to be sickened, 128,000 hospitalizations, and cause 3,000 deaths each year (http://www.sustainabletable.org/). These numbers may seem shocking, but they are all too real. All of the high levels

In our fast pace society, we base everything on time and money. This need to save money and time has transformed the way we see food and purchase food. Food is an essential part of all cultures. It plays a role in every person’s life. The population has the power to choose what we eat and how the food industry is shaped. There are many important questions that we need to ask ourselves in order to keep the food industry in check. These questions are: How do we know our food is safe? What should we eat? How should food be distributed? What is good food? These are simple yet difficult questions.
Since 2000, sales of organic foods in the United States have grown roughly 200%, and are expected to generate 42 billion dollars in 2014 (“US Organic Food Industry”, para. 1). This makes organics the fastest growing portion of the entire food industry, and worthy of keeping an eye on. The surge of growth was caused in part by the USDA release of its national standards for organic products in 2002, which subsequently prompted consumer demand for food that was healthier and better for the environment, and the popularization of “health food” stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s that market to these consumers (Callard, 2009).

Food safety is an increasingly important public health issue. Governments all over the world are intensifying their efforts to improve food safety. Food borne illnesses are diseases, usually either infectious or toxic in nature, caused by agents that enter the body through the ingestion of food. “In industrialized countries, the percentage of people suffering from food borne diseases each year has been reported to be up to 30%. In the United States of America, for example, around 76 million cases of food borne diseases, resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths, are estimated to occur each year.” (Geneva 2)
A SWOT analysis of the food control system in Bahrain revealed that certain strengths and weaknesses are inherent in the system. In addition to the weaknesses and the strengths, there are threats that would negatively affect the system if not prevented or brought under control. Nevertheless, the there are opportunities available for responding to the threats, making the Bahrain food control systems more efficient and effective. It is therefore important that some or all of these strengths, opportunities, threats, and weaknesses are reviewed. Conspicuous among the weaknesses is the fact that limited resources are available for the agencies and the personnel employed in the Bahrain food control system. Related to lack of resources is the lack of skills and competencies in applying modern techniques, more so in microbiological and chemical analysis. The second weakness of the Bahrain food control system is that most of the laws and regulations on food safety and control are not based on risk- or science-based analysis. In other words, the laws could be outdated and irrelevant in comparison with the latest mechanisms by which pathogens and other contaminants affect foodstuffs (Nestle, 2007). Furthermore, Bahrain lacks the technical expertise or competent enough personnel who could assess the effectiveness and the applicability of their food control laws.
