Many people do not see salons as harmful to the environment. Customers think hair salons are a good thing to the environment, but they do not know they harm the earth. Hair salons can be improved by reducing their electricity and getting better appliances that save energy and/or electricity. Some reasons salons are not safe for the environment are as follows: workers leave their appliances plugged in, lots of chemicals in each appliance, and their lights are on for more than 9 hours a day. The AEC (Appliance Energy Calculator) helps one figure out an estimate of your electricity bill for an appliance, and how much energy they can conserve. It allows them to calculate your energy cost for specific products. For example, if they want a hair dryer with 2200 watts, they use it 9 hours a day, and 103 days a year it will cost approximately 224.33 dollars each year, but all salons have more than 5 dryers, and it will cost at least 1121.65 dollars each year. “There are several ways to estimate how much electricity your appliances and home electronics use: Reviewing the Energy Guide label. The label provides an estimate of the average energy consumption and cost to operate the specific model of the appliance you are using. Note that all not all appliances or …show more content…
Most salons need to use energy-efficiency lights. They should try to use LED lights instead of halogens, because it is less energy and last longer than halogens. It is very important to save electricity in your salon. When customers get their hair done with hot water, they are running up the electricity bill. You should mix it with a little cold water, the temperature between 60 and 70. “ A typical hairdressing salon consumes a staggering 40,000kWh of electricity every year through use of electrical hairdressing equipment and hot water.” The hair equipment uses most of the electricity on their bill, because it has so many chemicals in
The lights in our Swain West 007 lecture room were accidentally left on overnight (5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., i.e., 15 hours). If electricity costs \$0.10/kWh, how much does this oversight cost if the energy consumption of the lights is 2200 W?
The United States, as well as the world, is more and more dependent on electronics. Everything around us runs on electricity; from the cars we drive, our dependency on mobile electronics we use, all the way down to the cappuccino machines that make our favorite beverages. We love our electronics. Last year alone “retail sales of consumer electronics fell just short of $1 trillion in 2011,” reports John Laposky of TWICE magazine, and those sales “are predicted to hit $1.04 trillion in 201...
According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, DST increases overall energy consumption by “approximately 1 percent” (Kotchen) and rises to 2-4 percent in the fall. The use of air conditioning, television, lighting, and other appliances causes the residential energy demand to
First and foremost, it’s essential that the appliances are addressed. Appliances are the “age spots” of a house. As a result of planned obsolescence, products such as refrigerators and dishwashers are meant to be replaced every ten to fifteen years. This leads to the innovation of new ideas during product manufacturing. For example, when manufacturers released stainless steel refrigerators, the once-popular white models with the convenient ice distributer quickly became outdated. This illustrates a simple rule: investing in new appliances is one of the quickest ways to make a home feel as though the builders recently made the finishing touches and packed up their tools. They instantly modernize the house. This is the reason new appliances weigh so heavily in a buyer’s decision ...
Throughout the decades, women’s fashion has evolved many times, each time creating a fashion stamp unique to that particular decade. One thing has remained the same and managed to remain a part of every era: hairspray. It is a cosmetic product that is meant to hold hair in its place. A lot of products we use today are may have unseen consequences to daily usage. A product I use almost daily is hairspray. I always knew hairspray was bad for the environment because of the aerosol that was in them would break down the ozone layer, so I began to look at a specific hairspray that I use just about every morning and night, Sebastian Shaper Hairspray, Regular, Styling Mist for Hold & Control. This specific Sebastian Hairspray product is not only bad for the environment; it is also bad for humans and animals.
A salon is not always a pretty and peaceful sight for those working there. At times, a
Based on Laurel Nesbit, a program assistant in the Office of Sustainability here at UF, our campus manages to utilize 470,000 Megawatts of energy annually. This figure is generated from all the energy-consuming gadgets that operate on our campus on a daily bases. These gadgets include computers that are left turned on over the night even they are not in use, copiers, and the fume hoods in our laboratories. Admittedly, the success and the health of wellbeing of the students is contingent upon some of these equipment. For instance, the laboratories need the fume hoods in order to keep the experimenters safe. Instead of casting these necessities away, we can develop alternatives which will be capable of generating energy in order to compensate for the electricity that we endlessly
The Darby Company is re-evaluating its current production and distribution system in order to determine whether it is cost-effective or if a different approach should be considered. The company produces meters that measure the consumption of electrical power. Currently, they produce these meters are two locations – El Paso, Texas and San Bernardino, California. The San Bernardino plant is newer, and therefore the technology is more effective, meaning that their cost per unit is $10.00, while the El Paso plant produces at $10.50. However, the El Paso plant has a higher capacity at 30,000 to San Bernardino’s 20,000. Once manufactured, the meters are sent to one of three distribution centers – Ft. Worth, Texas, Santa Fe, New Mexico and Las Vegas. Due to the proximity of El Paso to Ft. Worth, they are only plant to ship to Ft. Worth. The costs associated with each shipment are described in detail in Appendix 2.2A. From these distribution centers, meters are shipped to one of nine customer zones. The Ft. Worth center services Dallas, San Antonio, Wichita and Kansas City, the Santa Fe center services Denver, Salt Lake City, and Phoenix, and the Las Vegas center ships to Los Angeles and San Diego.

Cosmetologists and clients both are being affected by improper sanitation and care. Cosmetologists are always going to stay in their work space until their shift is over. They will continually be breathing the dangerous fumes from the many different chemicals being used. These fumes will possibly cause some health hazards in their future. Clients will be coming in and out of the salon to get their services done. If there are improper cleaning skills and cosmetologists show less care towards their clients health, the client will possibly be getting a bacterial disease or maybe even a deadly disease. Diseases like hepatitis, HIV and AIDS can be possibly infect your tools. Cosmetologist and nail technicians do not know who will be coming in and out of the salon. They will not know what a person may be having with their health, hygiene, and o...
It’s not for Everyone Corn rows and afros, afro puffs and bantu knots, kinky twists and dreads… all familiar hairstyles in the black culture, but can you imagine your child going to school one morning just to be sent home because the hair was “distracting”? For years there has been an ongoing debate regarding natural hair in our school systems, and because more members of the black community are growing confident in wearing their natural hair, some schools feel like it is a distraction to others’ learning environment and should possibly be banned. Kenya vocalizes the unspoken, uncomfortable argument of many that natural hair looks unkempt, but even with the agreement of the mass on her side—Osburne’s use of pathos, diction, and the strategic placement of her article not only reads as the stronger text but calls her reader to break the silence on the targeting of the black community’s youth. Roxanna Kenya is a blogger who openly admits to natural hair being “ugly”.

The industry realm of technology has proven sustainability in all its facets from business to science. Technology has not only proven it sustainability in the business environment but in society’s main stream individual’s life. Sigel (2010) stated, the estimated global market for smart appliances will increase from $3.06 billion to $15.12 billion (refrigerators $2.69 billion and washers $3.54 billion). The aggregate supply and demand is continuously evolving at a rapid pace. Smart kitchen appliances are designed to afford energy efficiency unlike the traditional one, along with providing comfortability (PR Newswire, 2015).

Household energy conservation is a very practical and realistic approach to conserving energy within our society. US households consume a tremendous amount of natural gas as well as electric energy. It has been calculated that the amount of energy consumed within the US increased exponentially from about 1850 to 1975. If energy continued to increase at this rate, we would be experiencing severe energy shortages in our current society. Luckily, steps towards conservation, including various energy regulations, have curbed that growth somewhat, brining the predicted 160 Qbtu/yr for the year 2000 down to around 93.8 Qbtu/yr by the year 1996. However, household energy usage is still a major issue as households consume about 38% of the total consumed energy and contribute greatly to natural gas consumption and issues such as global warming. Therefore, it is important that people understand how we use energy in the household and what steps can be taken to conserve that energy.
