Hair in the 1980's
Throughout the years we see different trends, styles, and taste's that apply to what society accepts as attractive at their moment. Some people choose more conservative looks whereas other generations were far more liberal in their way of dressing and styling their hair. In order to understand why people would choose certain hairstyles in the 1980's it is important to know more about that year for example, who were the top celebrities or other famous people that had a major influence on society during that time. We know that most fashion and hair trends come from artists in the music industry because they play a major role in everyone's life. People will listen to their music and watch their music videos which will serve as

an inspration to their desired styles. The following is an example of the celebrities that influenced the generation at that time and which hairstyles became known because of them. For women, in the early 1980's permed hair was one of the most sought out trends. In ancient times, women did not have the same chemicals or tools that we have today in order to achieve certain looks. Women then in order to attain curls were required to use mudd and with some rods which were made out of wood had to be applied to the hair and expected to dry and that would hold a curl in their hair. Eventually throughout time they used different methods other than mudd. Some other methods were far more dangerous because it involved a person being connected to electric tongs that were hooked on to the hair but it put their hair at risk of being burnt off and their scalp most likely burning. Eventually people started perming their hair with chemical solutions which weren't as intimidating as the older methods and that reformed the structure of the hair. In the 1980's however, curly hair or tight curls were really popular. Most women left their hair grow out long and permed it to still have those tight curls without having their hair too short. The reason why most people preffered to do a perm was also to attain volume in ther hair which was required to make their hair stand out in that time. Teasing the hair and backcombing were very useful teqniques at that time for that big hair that everyone wanted to have. A perfect example of a celebrity that was very influential at the time was Madonna. The style that most girls sought out for was perming and lightening the hair, just like their favorite pop icon. Highlights were also very popular at the time because like Madonna who not only had highights and curly hair, she had a dirty blonde color that suited her very well. Women and teenagers were also using hairpieces such as bows or ribbons in their hair. That was a trend that Madonna brought to that generation of young ones. Like Madonna, pat benatar and other women , side pony tails were also a very popular hairstyle among female artists and the perm would help them achieve that very messy pony tail that most girls used. However, not only women were wearing their hair curly during the 80's. Curls were also very popular in men at the time. Michael Jackson was well known for having this hairstyle on the cover of his album titled Thriller. Many men wore the Jheri curl but this was even more common in the African- American community. Michael Jackson however had a combination of a mullet and the Jheri curls which was very common to see at that time. This hairstyle was considered to be high maintenance because it required constant hydration to the hair in order to prevent the curl from drying. The bad part about the products that people used was that most of them were extremely greasy and would also stain any clothing that the person would wear. Another example of a man that influenced most men to get the jheri curl was Lionel Richie. Even though he had naturally curly hair , his curls always looked shiny and moisturized which was something that most men preffred. Other hairstyles that were worn by men resulted by the influence of alternative rock bands or heavy metal bands.
Some of the popular rock or punk styles were the Mohawks, most band member were shaving their heads with the exception of the middlde section of their head from the top of the forehead to the nape of the head. Some of those mohawks had side burns incorporated because they had made a comeback but men preffereed them to be shorter and thinner than the other usual styles. Mohawks were also really long and sometimes men would prefer to even color their remainding hair which resulted in really dramatic looks. The mohawks also varied depending on everyone's hair texture. Some people wore their's curly other's wore their's straight or it just depended which look they were aiming for. Celebrities from different bands were spending so much money on hairspray because they were keeping up with the trend . The more messy, frizzy and big long teased the hair was with ridiculous amounts of volume, the morre attention it drew and it was considered to be cool and normal for …show more content…
them. Mousse , gel and hairspray was everyone's best friend at the time. Some of the sprays even contained colors like orange, pink and green. Mousse would sometimes contain glitter which wasn't rare to see because makeup that contained shimmer was very common especially in teenagers. Dippity-Do was a popular gel that most people would use at the time. These products would enable styles such as longer mohawks to stay upright and the mousse would help maintain the permeed curls that everyone had. Dry frizzy hair that was crunchy was seen everywhere because the products that were being used such as hairspray and mousse contain alcohol which is very drying to the hair. People made that their everyday look. Everyone would also tease the bangs and add volume to them which in my opinion sometimes the excessive teasing seemed like their hair was a bird's nest. Some popular and most used styling tools at the time include a crimper, blowdryer ,roller sets, curling irons and irons. The crimper was used to make the hair big but not curly. It created a zig zag effect and when teased, it would result in really big hair. It was helpful for people who had fine hair because this made their hair density appear fuller. Hairdryers were the most important because men and women would use diffusers for their curls, after applying their desired product whether it be mousse or hair gel the diffuser would help to keep the curls intact. Roller sets were also used prior to blow drying permed hair. This added the ridiculous volume to the hairstyle. Curling irons were also very popular for people who maybe wanted more curls or didn't choose to get a perm. Some of the hairtyles such as the mullet and the mowhawk also the female's layered hair were held at a 90 degree angle when cutting. This resulted in an even look for the mohawk and for the mullet it was common to see the top part of the male's hair to stick up and the rest of the hair in the back would lay flat. For me it helps to know what angle was being used because now there are clients that will go to a salon and request certain haircuts that we don't regularly do on a daily basis but in order to set ourselves apart from other stylists I beleive learning about the past trends that have influenced most of the people will be very useful for us when those trends return or an upcoming celebrity has a modern take on one of those looks. For women, I beleive they had a combinatioon of an 180 and 90 degree haircut and blunt haircuts started becoming popular as well. It was very common to see that people would never have a particular part in their hair. Everyone would have the hair teased either way so there was no need to part the hair. Hair colors were also very dramatic choices such as bright blue and bright red colors that both men and women would get along with their haircuts which is a trend that I feel is in a modern way coming back with more women doing colorful ombres such as turquoise which kylie Jenner has made very popular lately, lavender, red, red violet and even silver tones which is an inspiration from the character Elsa from the animated film Frozen. Pravana is a great example of colors that are very vibrant and I feel most stylists will use that color line on their clients when they feel the need to have a dramatic change in their client's hair color. The only difference that I see with our time and the 80's is that most people are really aiming for cool tones which was not very common to see that back in that era but in makeup most women now will incorporate very dramatic lip colors that are matte. In the 80's it was different because for makeup to go with the hair women would choose eye shadows that were not only bright but had shmmer and this year matte lip colors and foundations with a matte finish is something more women look for. After looking at different pictures online from that time, I can see that I would want to try a similar haircut on someone like the one's in the 80's but I would most likely do a modern take on it because I am not a fan of the bangs being overly teased however, I do feel that using the same 90 degree angle for a haircut I can achieve something more conservative but still make it look like it was an 80's inspired haircut.
What I mainly loved about the 80's was how women like Madonna would wear the side pony tail but it just looked so fashionable and it seemed like it was something so effortless however, after reading that in order to attain those looks they had to spray ridiculous amounts of hairspray, I am just thankful that now we have more product choices that won't dry the hair as much as Aqua Net Hairspray would to
evryone. Those are some of the hairstyles that were really poupular in the 80's and somehow have been incorporated into new hairdo's by some celebrities in our times such as Rhianna who started the red hair trend and more teenagers started their own versions of red hair and later tried burgandy which eventually led girls wanting lavedur hair. Other celebrities who have set trends include Katy Perry in her music video, "Last friday night" where she had an 80's inspired hairstyle which I can see that they used a crimper on her hair in order to make her hair look fuller, her dress that had differnt bright colors was also an inspiration from that era. Kyie jenner wth green and sometimes turquoise hair and Vanessa Hudgens with her red ombre have had an influence on this generation's teenagers. The 80's was such an inspirational time because people would really experiment and were fearless when trying different styles which opened the door to more and more ideas for us as cosmetologists. Just like the 80's now more hairstylist are experimenting and learning new ways of not only doing hairstyles but haircolors that are just remarkable such as the rose colored ombre which a beautiful faded pink color. Anyone working in runway , movie set or just as a stylist in general will benefit with becoming familiar with that era because people are still inspired by that time and will request certain looks that can be similar to the one's they have seen in magazines or in movies. It can also inspire us to try things that are unusual and that are outside the box which can lead to possibly a new trend to introduce.
On August 3, 1979, a female was assaulted and raped in her apartment. Victor Burnette, 19 years old, was brought in as a suspect and the female said that he was the perpetrator. Burnette was convicted based on pubic hairs found at the scene. He spent seven years in prison and was released on parole in ’87. Two decades later, Burnette asked to have his case reworked using DNA analysis and was found to be not guilty. The serologist who worked his case was Mary Jane Burton. By the time Burnette cleared his name, at least five other people had been exonerated from their convictions due to Burton’s evidence. (“Victor”) Hair analysis has been a part of forensic science since the beginning. However, some have begun to question the reliability of

Everyone faces varying degrees of peer pressure at least once in their lifetime, but what matters is how one reacts. In Bad Haircut—a collection of short stories—the author, Tom Perrotta, examines the effect of peer pressure on the main character, Buddy, in a comical yet informative light. Buddy faces peer pressure consistently and ends up associating with the wrong people, due to a lack of backbone. Yet Buddy is different and a better person than those who he associates with because he is compassionate and able to recognize that he is a follower; therein lies the irony that only the reader sees Buddy’s merit while the other characters only see the results of his friends’ poor judgment.
The 1980’s is one of the most interesting decades that was experienced in the United States. Dealing with the stock market, the coming up of new inventions, all the way to the types of music people listened to. During the 1980s, the only thing that made Americans be “Americans” was because of the things they were provided with. Many Americans had fun throughout the 1980s with materialistic, glamorous, and technological life styles; therefore there were different economical problems that Americans faced.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in the 1980’s? The crazy hair styles, the new and improved things that were being created made this time alive, and fun. To be born in the 1980’s would have a been a privilege, who wouldn’t want to be known as “The decade that defined…. “US!” The 1980s was a decade that began on January 1, 1980, and ended on December 31, 1989. This decade was a great social and economic time period for people living in the 80’s. The world was becoming more developed as well as everyone in it. This decade became the “Look at me” generation of status seekers. The 80’s made a new breed of billionaires and money makers. “The decade began with double-digit inflation, Reagan declared a war on drugs, Kermit didn't find it easy to be green, hospital costs rose, we lost many, many of our finest talents to AIDS which before the decade ended spread to black and Hispanic women, and unemployment rose,” according to Peggy Whitely of Lone Star College. Although this time seemed like all fun and games, there were many problems. People say we lost the meaning of “We” and it suddenly became “I.” Citizens were realizing that you couldn’t depend on others around you; they were coming up with new ideas, and inventions to allow things to be more efficient. Although the 1980’s suffered a huge change for the American people, the fads and fashion part of the people strived, as well as the inventions. These two things will be some of the most historical, yet fascinating parts of the 80’s generation in American History.

Whenever I travel to another part of the US or another country in the world I find myself taking on the vocal and speech patterns of a native speaker. I lose my own way of speaking, and adopt that area's accent.
In the 90’s, the concept of music was a huge explosion compared to previous years, though there were many more acts of creativity. Primarily, music played a huge part in society as apposed to other decades. Most well known from this time were the bands Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime and Rage Against the Machine, just to name a few. These bands most defiantly showed the creativeness that America possessed and is proved by the amount of 90’s music that is still widespread. Another concept of creativeness was fashion. Two main forms of clothing came around that set America aside from the rest of the world. This was the beginning of jeans and flannel shirts. Having these pieces of clothing widespread throughout the country defiantly set America apart. Finally, pop culture in this era also showed our nations creativeness. Pokemon had stuck out the most from everything else. The production of millions of “baseball cards” with animated animals on them was a huge sensation for kids and teens across the country. The enjoyment of having a strong pull of creativeness in America was not a bad thing at all, yet a decade cannot always be perfect.
With rioting and terrorism taking place around the world, more aggressive and rebellious styles were being created. The punk look came with this; singers like Johnny Rotton and bands like The Ramones and the Sex Pistols were a few to lead a new generation of teens. There was also the introduction of glam-rock in which musicians mixed glamour with rock. Davis Bowie was the most successful. Fans copied his "rooster" hair cut. He made the androgynous look popular.
The theater has continued to make an impact on American culture even today. Just like in the 20th century, civil rights has been a hot topic in the 21st century. Multiple shows, including Hairspray and Caroline, or Change, clearly display the effects of racism and the importance of the civil rights movement. Hairspray follows the story of a young Tracy Turnblad who is fighting to desegregate the Corny Collins Show. The musical celebrates black culture and displays healthy relationships between whites and blacks. U.S.A. Today wrote that, “with a message about accepting ourselves and each other while celebrating and embracing our diversity, this Hairspray felt more relevant,” showing that even young audience members can find the story relatable
Throughout each decade particular lifestyles have influenced the styles of fashion in many different aspects. History throughout each decade being a period of 10 years, has had certain lifestyles, referring to the way of life and the way an individual lives and these lifestyles throughout these years have influenced the fashion, fashion being a trend of either clothing, personal appearance and behaviour. Many life events or Historical events from the years 1960 to 2000’s have had reactions from the fashion industry; certain decades in particular lifestyles had either rebellion or a positive reaction. In 1960 there was a rebellion from young adults as well as women which influenced the fashion of that decade, in which fashion was similar to the 1970s fashion however 1970 was known as the disco age. Whereas the 1980 was a decade of entertainment in all forms which influenced mostly teenagers in their style of fashion. However the 1980s entertainment impact on teenagers carried on in the 1990 and 2000s although fashion focused more on the impact of music rather than all forms of entertainment, these decades were eras of grunge music and heavy metal. Therefore fashion became and becomes the portrayal of the lifestyle in a particular period of time or history.
Television and movies were at its golden moments as majority of Tv shows and movies classics came from the 90s like the simpsons which is “The series currently holds the record for the longest-running prime-time sitcom in the US, running for 25 years since 1989, and becoming the longest-running program on FOX”(Wiki). American movie classics were born like Titanic, Forrest gump, Toys story, and The Matrix. Movies and Tv shows were amazing during this time but the “icing to the cake” of Entertainment came from videogames as gaming companies fought to get more support and purchase of their consoles and games as gaming became popular because of these games Super mario, Pokemon, Mortal Kombat, Sonic, Zelda and Tetris. Fashion of the 1990s was wild and colorful with crazy geometric shapes and If your clothes were not baggy then you were considered lame. Plenty of popular clothing brands in the 21st century made their launch to popularity because of the 90s. The group who molded 90s fashion to be greatest where the youth, the youth were the ones who started so many popular fashion trends that would make the 90s have a unique look. You were not a 90s kid if you did not have a pair or a bunch of Levi’s jeans, Levi’s was the go to jean as the popular 517 and 501 were born and everyone was cutting their Levi’s, Rolling up their Levi’s, or even
The creation of mini-skirts did bring a whirlwind in the summer of 1960. Besides, the Peter Max T-shirt was also hot in the 60s. In addition, we discussed the fashion style for the 80s.
