Habitat For Humanity has employed various approaches in its quest to achieve an ambitious social impact. The organization works closely with volunteers as well supporters from all over the globe in the advancement of its social mission for building decent homes for the families and communities that are underprivileged (Marshall, 2014). HFH operations are founded on the doctrines of Christianity. Whereby the effort is to promote the livelihoods as well as the living standards of the economically challenged people. In the United States of America, Habitat for Humanity has about 1,400 affiliate bodies that support its operations through volunteer efforts and financial assistance (Kraeger, 2010). Strengths of Habitat: Donations form a critical component in financing the operations for the achievement of the social impact of HFH. Profoundly, due to the strategic partnerships with the 1,400 affiliates domiciled in the United States as well as the 70 international supporters; the organization gains the financial muscle necessary to run the projects. Arguably, the Christian foundation principles are vital for driving the growth of HFH in a manner that observes high integrity and accountability from the managers of the organization (Kraeger, 2010). In the same view, HFH has created long-term …show more content…
Over the years, some volunteers have sustained severe injuries while others have lost their life in the line of volunteer service, especially in the United States and Asia (Baggett, 2011). HFH has made serious effort to manage this challenge through the implementation of a supervised volunteer service program. In this program, the volunteers who participate in the preparations of the affordable homes are required to take instructions from the supervisors who are skilled and knowledgeable in the field of construction (Marshall,

While sitting in my dorm room watching a DVD, I looked around and suddenly realized how lucky I was. I lived in a decent sized room with lighting and air conditioning that I could adjust to make myself comfortable. Then I thought how even more lucky I was to be able to go home too yet a nicer living facility at my own house that I have to share with nobody but my immediate family. It made me begin to wonder how many people there are that do not possess this luxury. That is when I thought of Habitat for Humanity. The only thing that I knew about it was that they built homes for underprivileged families with inadequate shelter. I wanted to see though exactly how this specific organization made a difference in peoples lives. Hopefully my research will enlighten my readers of the living situations of many families around the world, maybe even convincing some to volunteer themselves.
HCH mission is “Health Care for the Homeless works to prevent and end homelessness for vulnerable individuals and families by providing quality, integrated health care and promoting access to affordable housing and sustainable incomes through direct service, advocacy, and community engagement” (Strategic Plan, 2016). This is HCH new mission statement for the 2012-2017 strategic plan. They changed their mission statement because it did not fit with all of the services they wanted to provide to the community. HCH old mission statement did not go into detail about what they were trying to do, but the new statement provide more in-depth facts and provide their goals and reasoning for the homeless population. HCH mission state explains their purpose and express how they will be more in the community such as advocating
Therefore, the supply of housing that is affordable and accessible to low income people should be increased. Plus assistance that allows people to reach adequate stability should be regarded as a good investment in a productive society, in order to attain our objective. First we could start by introducing more productive assistance programs that actually focus on helping those in need of housing assistance. These programs will analyze how long people are homeless, what are their needs, the causes of homelessness, and in all how many are currently without a home. Subsequently, the City of Austin would begin building affordable housing according to the amount necessary.
When deciding on which non-profit organization to give resources to, a person must think of a number of questions that need to be answered in which to choose a certain one. The most pertinent of these questions is the one that asks which cause the person cares about the most. The problem, for a majority of the population, is that they just do not know what they truly care about. That is why the United Way is the best option for donations. The United way does not focus on one specific, but instead works for a variety of different causes focused on fixing some of the different problems inside of the United States. The United Way is an organization, which envisions a world where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, income stability and healthy lives. It plans to do this by improving lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good. The United Way needs money and time in order to achieve some of these goals. This essay will explain why the United Way is the best organization to give ones resources to.
I finally got exposure to the low-income families with my grandfather. My grandfather is the person who got me involved in the Habitat work. He is a retired construction teacher and he has taught me many carpentry and handyman skills. I have done a Blitz Build before and I enjoyed it very much. I love doing that type of work and it is even more fun when I get to help out a family with my skills. At Clemson I got to practice these skills once again when my English class helped work on a Habitat house. Now we are assisting the actual Habitat organization by making a promotional brochure. I think that all students should get involved with an organization such as Habitat for Humanity. Doing this will bring them to a closer understanding of what it is like to live in a low income or even homeless family.
This group has been a crucial piece for the homeless right to shelter. Before this group, homeless people have struggled to find places to stay and usually would sleep in the streets. But because of the the Coalition, homeless people have the option to sleep in shelters. The organization helps on average 3,500 men, women and children who are homeless in a day. They are actively giving support to the homeless by “provide emergency food and blankets, eviction prevention, crisis services and individual advocacy, permanent housing, job training and special
People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
What does it mean to become a social worker? Why was I committing two years of my life to school after renouncing further education? I asked myself this after I applied, waited anxiously for my acceptance letter and scrambled to figure out the finances after I was accepted. I could not have guessed that the first day of the Micro Human Behavior Social Environment (SWG 510) would capture my attention and thrust me into the professional world of Social Work. As I learned more about what it meant to become a social worker, I found myself aligning to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Ethical Standards as reviewed through Foundation Course I’s first chapters.
America has supported families who lacked finance, education, shelter, food, and clothes as early as the 1800’s. After the civil war, many families received temporary assistance from congress, and religious institutions; such as the Freedman Bureau, and the Roman Catholic Church. As of today, the Catholic Charities USA is known for serving the nation as one of the best supporters for those with serious needs. Across the country, the CCUSA assist families and individuals in poverty through difficult and challenging setbacks too overwhelming for their economics, and emotions. The Catholic Charities desired goal as they work to decrease poverty; is to help people meet their full potentials, as well as assist them in becoming self-sufficient characters. (Catholic Charities USA, 2014) The Salvation Army is another organization which has a lengthy history for assisting people who lack essential needs due to setbacks. “The Salvation Army is committed to serving the whole body, soul, mind, and spirit.” (Salvation Army USA, 2014)
While volunteering there, I was placed in a local long-term care home for the elderly. This experience was highly beneficial. Working along side, nurses, care aids and other health care professionals was my first view inside the “system”. Volunteering at the Care Home, did not necessarily make up my mind on the field of social work but solidified my desire to work in the field of human services. I learnt from this experience at the hospital how profound my compassion for others truly was. It was not until my first year of college, that I started to volunteer with an organization that I am still with today and absolutely adore volunteering with. That organization is the Vernon Women’s Transition House in Vernon BC. I started off by filling in for employees who met in weekly meetings. While on the floor, I met many women who were in a place of ‘in-between’ and safety. This experience was eye opening. After a brief stay out-of-town, I returned to Vernon and again volunteered with the transition house – this time in another program: Support to Young Parents. This is an incredible housing program where young mothers who have fled abuse (potentially without the resources or parenting skills they truly need) can live long term. This apartment consists of 6 units, with the 7th unit converted into a resource and common space. The program
Volunteering enables a person to develop new skills that he or she would otherwise not have been able to develop. Unlike most other organizations, a charitable organization is happy to give positions to passionate, though inexperienced, individuals who desire to help others and benefit the community. Therefore, an individual with little experience in a field of work can gain meaningful skills that he or she can use in the future. For example, while I volunteered at the hospital this summer, I learned about the daily work lives and professional duties of doctors and nurses. Had I not volunteered, I would not have learned about these things. I was always interested in the medical field, but volunteering at the hospital let me explore my interests and en...
Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities. Just a small act can make a huge difference in someone’s life. The future is dependent on the individual person and the people they surround themselves with. Just a few hours will change both the volunteer’s life and the one that is in need.
Some people that live in poverty do not have anywhere to call home, others “die quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world” (Shah 1). “The modern urban household is an extremely expensive thing” (Galbraith 508); this is why we, the people, should provide safe and affordable shelter for families in need of an improved shelter or a shelter at all. A variety of organizations exist to construct homes for low-income individuals. These organizations include both faith-based enterprises and secular groups. In either case, these organizations tend to utilize donated supplies, cash support and volunteer labor to build durable, safe homes for economically disadvantaged individuals and families. One of the most popular organization is an ecumenical Christian ministry, Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity began constructing homes for poor families in 1976. By the end of 2009, the organization constructed over 350,000 homes in 3,000 communities around the world. During the period from its founding through the end of 2009, Habitat for Humanity provided safe, comfortable homes for over 1.75 million people. As you can see, this organization has improved the lives of many and continues to do so. Providing homes for the people in need of a safe shelter will improve the success of society and lead us out of
