Gym Observation

I visited a school in my hometown of Kannapolis, North Carolina. I observed a 5th grade gym class at Kannapolis Intermediate School, which is a school I attended for 5th and 6th grade. The gym was similar to what I remember. The gym has a shiny, hardwood floor, that has basketball lines painted on it. On the sides of the floor, there are dots on the floor for playing games and jumping. Two basketballs hang across from each other on each sides of the gym. There is a large set of black and tan bleachers on the horizontal wall of the gym. On this side, the bleachers spell out “TIGER,” which is the school’s mascot. Across from the bleachers, there is a smaller set of bleachers against the wall. There is also a gym closet next to the bleachers. The closet has cones, jump ropes, small weights, hula hoops, exercise balls, dodgeballs, volleyballs, small goals, volleyball nets, rolling scooters, yoga mats, gymnastic mats, basketballs, kick balls, polyspots, dodgeballs, wiffleballs, rackets, footballs, and multiple first aid kits. The students involved were active for at least 50% of the class time because they were running, hitting, and jumping. However, I noticed that some students stood toward the back and chose not to get involved in the activity. As a result, they did not do any physical activity except for the warm up and cool down. After seeing this, I do not feel that this lesson provided maximal activity time, but I think it had potential to. If the teachers would have set out two nets, the classes would have been broken up into smaller groups. That way, students would have a greater chance of participating. I also think that teachers should let students maneuver around and change teams from time-to-time. In the end, maybe the students will feel comfortable enough to involve themselves in the
