Franklin Gothic is a popular typeface that is often used in various advertisements such logos, books, movies, and much more. It is a clean and easy to read font for viewers. Franklin Gothic has a timeless quality about it and seems to be a reason for the continuous success of the typeface (“A Brief History of Franklin Gothic,” 2016). In 1902, designer Morris Fuller Benton created the Franklin Gothic typeface. Benton was the head typeface designer for American Type Founders, also known as ATF. Not only was he a head typeface designer of ATF, but also was in charge of the design department. Along with Franklin Gothic, Benton also created over two hundred other typefaces. Some of his most popular include; Bodoni, Garamond, Goudy bold, Broadway, and many others. Franklin was known to be a typeface printer himself. The font was also inspired by the commercial sans-serif typeface Akzidenz-Grotesk, which was created in 1898 (“Franklin Gothic,” n.d.). The Franklin Gothic type has a bold weight and is also part of the sans serif family. The font is more often used in headlines than in bodies of text. The reason for this seems to be because the characters are bolder than more commonly used body text fonts. This makes it harder for the viewer to read large bodies of text when it is in Franklin Gothic font.
