Some would claim the best results for getting healthy are found only when someone can afford to pay a club gym membership. Other opponents claim that joining a club does not have to be the only way to meet fitness goals.
Most Americans agree that there are benefits when a balanced exercise routine has been integrated within their lives. However, some debate the proper environment to achieve this balance and reach fitness goals. Some say becoming a member of a gym club is the best and only way to achieve the goal of moving bodies for better health while others claim that individuals are able to achieve the exact same results by working out at home and saving their money.

Millions of people who would like to do better at exercising will find many excuses for not putting forth the efforts to get out and get moving. Americans are compelled to keep activity levels easy for a variety of different reasons. Investing in club membership is a waste of money for many Americans. If individuals do not want to be motivated to work out, they will not work out no matter where they are.
Individuals that are motivated and become more physically fit will do it. Finding a different method of daily exercise is a better option than purchasing a gym club membership. When individuals stop buying gym memberships they may see many more benefits that would may otherwise go unnoticed. Increasing the wallet size by saving the cost of a monthly gym membership each month all the while slimming down the waistline sounds like a win-win motivating factor to cancel the gym club
Customers usually make decision of purchase by comparing the “value” of a product or service, which can be looked as the benefit–sacrifice ratio. Many customers find the prices of most health club and gyms too high because they see little value in some of extra amenities, in other words, they find that the benefit they receive is not valuable, comparing to the sacrifices they make; in this case, the benefit-sacrifice ratio in this case is pretty low. Therefore, Planet Fitness offers good value membership, which means high benefit-sacrifice ratio for customers, comparing to other major gyms.
A major threat to the business is the fact that UW-‐Oshkosh students already pay for a gym membership that is included in their tuition. It is important that we do everything possible to promote Planet Fitness and draw this group in. We will minimize this threat by offering student discounts and gearing our promotions towards the younger demographic.
In the article “Fitness Culture: A Growing Trend in America by Sheila McClain, it speaks in detail why American have increased their interest in health and fitness. Sheila conducts a comprehensive research of the subject and provides strong statics and information from others. Since, we are an age of technology and everyone is more involved in learning we have learned that fitness matters and is a key link to good health.
When it comes down to it everyone ends up working out because it becomes a part of their everyday life style and they enjoy doing it. A person who is slightly overweight would get into the gym for weight loss and quickly see that there are many other people around working towards the same goal. Progress becomes easier when encouragement is received from others. Whether it is said or not everyone has their own motive to go to the gym, that easily separates people in this discourse community. However, it also brings unity to their own group.
Who doesn’t want to have to do exercise? Everybody needs exercise to be in good health, but some people don’t like to exercise. They just want to stay inside and do nothing in life. Even though people don’t want to exercise all the time they could have a treadmill or a bike to exercise on instead of going outside and running or play basketball with friends just to lose weight. With America’s obesity rate on the rise a CrossFit gym that welcomes beginners, thoroughly teaches and explains each exercise and can offer a group atmosphere that’s welcoming to individuals who have never worked out before could help decrease the obesity rate. The group aspect of CrossFit is beneficial because it’s a motivator to keep attending workouts and to reach the goals you have personally set. The Health and fitness industry have many ethical issues involved which was very interesting to me. I have never purchased a membership at a health club, but from the reading I learned a lot about how they operate. It amazed me that health clubs push their sales representatives to get 200-300 new members a month (Amend, 1992). This is a large amount of people for such a short amount a time, which means some members are not fully aware of the fine print of the membership agreement. Also the reading mentions that more than half of instructors at these clubs do not have valid certification (Copeland et al, 1988),. This is unethical because the members pay each month for the service of a qualified staff member to assist them in exercise and fitness. Safety of the members could also be at risk working out with a non-qualified trainer. Learning how these companies do business make me want to hold off as long as possible to join a gym.
Financial costs of physical activity behavior in regards to the cost of a gym membership had appeared as a barrier for five participants. Otherwise, participants should admit that there were other avenues in which physical activity was possible without incurring the cost of a gym membership (Buman, Yasova, & Giacobbi, 2010). The consumption of alcohol was also pointed out as other barriers preventing the elderly from exercising (Ashe et al., 2009).
Routine physical activity may be difficult for those with low income to achieve. Firstly, people who have low income generally must work longer and laborious hours than people in the high and middle income rankings in order to have enough money to get by. Low-class Americans simply do not have the time or energy to exercise their bodies. Also, an individual’s economic status can be the cause for several obstacles of achieving physical fitness. For instance, the lack of transportation to and from the gym could be a major problem, as well as being able to pay gym membership fees or gym equipment. It is further explained, “A lack of good transportation choices is the most important single issue that limits routine activities such as walking, biking, and transit use by low income people.” (Squibb 2) Poor economy is only one of the ways low-income individuals are limited to physical fitness.
A gym as defined by the Oxford Dictionary states that it is a “membership organization that provides a range of facilities designed to improve and maintain physical fitness and health.” Within our society, the culture of a gym or health club is comprised of those who wish to maintain their physical health, as well as form a bond for like-minded people to support one another with their health goals within a shared environment. I have chosen to observe and understand the culture that embodies the Westford Regency Health Club, a local Massachusetts gym with higher than average membership pric es and a higher end reputation in comparison to the average franchised gym, such as Planet Fitness. I chose this particular gym for the sole fact that it is labeled as a “health club,” rather than a gym, which brings about the notion that it is somehow superior in regards to its facilities and membership privileges. For my research, I used an inductive method including participant-observation, as well as field notes gathered from my visits as a new member.

The gym where I train and workout, the Dubuque Martial Arts Group, is a place where I know who I am. It is a place I can go to escape my problems for a while and release some stress. It's not the actual physical building, but rather the events that have occurred there over the years. It's where I have formed some of my closest friendships. It is the place I have invested years of hard work for many of my accomplishments. To some it may seem odd that a place associated with sweat, blood and physical pain mean so much to someone. However, in my eyes it's almost like a second home.

Exercising is a popular activity for people around the world, but many people exercise indoors when they should be going outdoors for added benefits.
