Guns Should Not Be Banned In The United States

“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (“Second Amendment”). Every American is familiar with this sentence from the United States (U.S.) Constitution, which gives all American citizens the essential right to own and use a firearm. However, many people are challenging this right at this very moment. In fact, it is a constant debate whether guns should be completely banned, restricted, or left alone as they are already. Many people are now questioning how much control the American people should have when it comes to firearms. Guns are definitely a hot topic for our nation right now and people should be informed on the options there

Without any further delay, firearms should not be banned because Americans feel secure if they need to defend themselves. Many parents across the U.S. fear for the safety of their family, so they purchase a gun for a sense of security and a source of self-defense. 60 percent of Americans actually state that personal safety is the reason they own a gun (Swift). With these intentions, comes many situations where they will have to use them for this purpose. This is proven by a survey, which shows hundreds of thousands of “self-defense gun use” situations occur every single year (Rabkin). Sadly, every 107 seconds, another American is sexually assaulted and there is an average of 293,066 victims that are 12 or older that are raped or sexually assaulted each year (“Frequency of Sexual Assault”). In fact, some people say that the U.S. should ban guns because of the shootings that occur. In fact, there was about 13,286 people killed and 26,819 people injured by guns in the U.S. in 2015 (“Guns in the U.S.”). However, in 2015, there was 33,300 people killed and about 4.4 million people injured in car accidents in the U.S. (Ziv). So, instead of just proposing to ban guns, should the American people propose to ban cars instead because of the significant increase in deaths and injuries? Of course the government is not going to ban cars because they are such a large part of people’s lives, just as many Americans rely on guns for their own personal needs. Moving on, there are people that think that a gun ban would remove everyone’s fear of shootings occurring. In spite of that, if guns are banned, not only would many people be angry, but they could get their hands on guns through the black market. Also, these people could acquire another murder weapon, such as knives, saws, clubs, or just use their fists. To prove this, a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) report from 2013 shows 1,490 people were killed by knives or some other cutting instrument, while only 285 rifles and 308 shotguns were used as a murder weapon in the U.S. (“Expanded Homicide Data Table”).
