It is argued that the growth periods of childhood and adolescence is unique to the human species and is not observed in other living mammals. During this period human experience observable growth spurts in both height and weight at much higher levels than other mammals and primates. This is what set humans apart as the physical and behavioural characteristics of the adolescent stage are observed in other mammals. The evidence stems from the peak velocities for growth, often in response to hormone levels characteristically lower than in primates (Bogin. B, 1999). Within these values there is sexual dimorphism in the levels of these growth spurts. The childhood life stage is the precursor to the juvenile stage and the adolescent stage occurs post puberty (Bogin. B, 1997). …show more content…
Hormones caused by puberty and sexual maturation causing the growth spurt initiate the adolescent life stage. This period lasts between 5 to 10 years in humans (Bogin. B, 2010). The growth spurt is in both height and weight and in these peak velocities can show the differences amongst species. At a peak velocity it in fact females who are heavier than males, which is different from primates where the reverse is so (Leigh. S, 1996). Although Leigh (1996) argues that in terms of mass when accounting for variables such as body size the differences in mass are less distinctive. Bogin (1999) however argues that in terms of skeletal growth in height as a unique human characteristic. Females are also reaching a peak velocity at relatively earlier times compared to males. The most distinctive feature separating humans is the time scale in which the growth spurts occur in comparison to mammal counterparts. This is most likely due to the delay of human growth by the addition of childhood and adolescent growth
The teenage year is the time when the body starts producing sex hormones and goes through a major growth spurt. This is the period when
What does it mean to be a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset? In the book Mindset – The New Psychology of Success author Carol Dweck breaks down the meanings of a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset. A fixed mindset is when a person sees their failures as being an unsuccessful person. These fixed mindsets do not aim to challenge themselves due to the possibility of not succeeding or being seen dumb. They are discouraged by failing and hold back in life. Carol Dweck describes this has unhappiness. A growth mindset is a person who welcomes failures and takes these failures as a challenge to grow from their mistakes. They have the drive to push through the impossible, since to them there is no impossible. A Clear representation of growth
The perceived goal of children, or their parents, in Bailey’s article is to be of normal height at adulthood; but what is normal? The average height for American men is 5’9” and for women it is 5’4” (Bailey). According to Robert W. Steele, M.D., “alterations [in growth] may be in the form of a growth slow down, accelerated growth, or disproportionate grow...
In terms of physical growth and development, Ruth was in the prime of her life. Her organs and systems are all operating at peak efficiency in her young adulthood, roughly ages 20 to 40. Her whole body's internal organs and body systems have reached maturity and are at peak operation in terms of her strength and efficiency. According to her she said by the time she was in her mid-twenties, she reached her full height of 5 feet 8 inches. Her body has grown, and her physical potential was set. She said she took advantage of that by eating correctly and by working out to get stronger. At this time in life when she reaches her peak physically. The growth spurt that came during puberty set the ground work for what she is capable of becoming as a young adult. Her...

As individuals we also continue to develop physically, even though some of our physical changes may eventually progress in a negative way. Some physical changes may take place during adulthood, and in early adulthood an individual may continue to add height and weight, and some hormonal changes may continue, but the effects can be much less noticable than during adolescence. Early adulthood can be seen as the best physical condition; because you have sharp senses, are at your strongest and better stamina. Our memory and thinking abilities are at their highest as well. Some social development for us can be identified with our desire to be socially independent and our high drive to be successful, selecting a life partner, and starting a family. An article on Young Adult Development Project (2008) reads; a large and new body of research is revealing that early adulthood is a time of dramatic change in basic thinking structures, as well as in the brain. Consensus is emerging that an 18 year old is not the same person she or he will be at 25, just as an 11 year old is not the same as he or she will be at
However, many of our questions still remain. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the physical aspect of gender differences in humans, otherwise known as sexual dimorphism, it’s evolutionary history in our species, and some behavioral and societal trends that are associated with it. To accomplish this, I will begin by outlining the anatomical structures that are commonly used in measuring sexual dimorphism in our species. After establishing these criteria, I will expand upon the evolutionary history of sexual dimorphism in humans beginning with the anthropoids in the Oligocene and ending with present day trends.
Thies, K., & Travers, J. F. (2001). Growth and development through the lifespan. Thorofare, NY: Slack.
The importance of an individual’s lifespan has to be taken into account in order to fully understand the human development. Throughout this module I have learned that an individual’s lifespan consists of several beliefs that form a group of perspectives, that gives a consistent outlook on the nature of development. The concept of lifespan development is the study that observes patterns of growth and change and stability in one’s behavior that occurs throughout one’s lifespan. An interesting thing I picked up is that lifespan development derives from other features, such as sociology, that suggest that this field of lifespan development did not completely originate from developmental psychology. There are different areas in a lifespan such as
Increase in hormones affects internal and external growth. Motor skills in adolescence are that both genders develop more strength and speed in their movements, less clumsiness and more refined. There is a sequence when consecutive spurts happen as it first starts off with the weight spurt, then a height spurt, and finally a muscle spurt. As for motor skills, it is the just the same things learned from the past, and know everything we touched so have in one’s surroundings, as all that’s left to remember is how things function and

On the average, a newborn baby weighs 3.4 kg (7.5 lb) and is 53 cm (21 in) long, with the head disproportionately larger than the lower part of the body. As the child grows, increments in height are greatest from birth to three years; thereafter they are relatively constant until adolescence. The growth spurt at adolescence is far less than during infancy. Weight increments are also large during the first three years but are equally large during adolescence. Research shows that growth rates are influenced by the health of the child. Rates of development decelerate during illness; after an illness is cured, however, growth rates accelerate until children attain their appropriate height and weight.
I want to discuss the topic of physical development during middle adulthood. Physical development is the time when people become increasingly aware of the gradual changes in their bodies this marks the aging process. (Feldman, 2014) Life style choices such as smoking, diet, alcohol and exercise can have an effect on an individual’s physical development according to the text. There is also a height, weight, and strength changes. The changes are happening in a declining rate stated in the text. The senses also decline at this stage in life. As a people age, so does their bodies they go through biological changes. Women go through climacteric and menopause. Climacteric is the transaction from being able to have children to not having them. (Feldman,2014) Menopause is the period when women can no longer have children. (Feldman, 2014) The individual I chose to do my observation on is my aunt she is 49 years old. She is a stroke victim. She had
Economic growth is one of the most important fields in economics. In current generation economic is developing well. Economic growth is really important to country and for the world as well. Economic are one of the identity for country because it shows a country development and attraction for other countries (F, Peter. 2014). For example well economic develop such as Singapore, Dubai, New York, and Japan. These countries are well develop and maintaining their economic growths. Economic growths are really important because higher average incomes enables consumers to enjoy more goods and services. Then, lower unemployment with higher output and positive economic growth firms tend to utilize more workers creating more employment. Enhanced public
