Growing Up in a Toxic Environment Will Negatively Effect Human Development
How young children will think and behave as adults is highly effected by the things they experience early on in life. You might say that Laura was raised with strict religious values and is a very judgmental person, or that Josh was raised with little to no values and has now developed a disrespectful personality. Even if you aren’t sure of the cause of a persons behavior you can always be sure that there is one. The way that a person responds to and handles certain situations depends on how that person was raised to do so. Things like point of view and sense-of-self are developed in childhood, and are effected by early experiences and environment.
Have you ever wondered what makes a person think the way they do? Brain architecture is the neural connections across different areas of the brain that form throughout life. “Brain architecture provides the foundation for all future learning, behavior, and health” (Brain Architecture). According to The Center on the Developing Child the early years are the most active period for establishing neural connections, with 700 to 1,000 new connections being made every second in the first few years of life. ...it’s much more stressful to see your parents constantly unhappy or fighting with each other. Personally I would rather raise my child in a single parent home than to demonstrate to them that it is okay to let someone mistreat you or make you unhappy. Parents never want their children to have to go through what they’ve gone through, regardless of what it may be. However people in situations similar to these have usually been part of an unhealthy cycle for quite some time. People who grow up in a toxic home environment tend to end up raising their children the same way, a cycle such as this one could roll out from generation to generation. I know that’s not something that I would want to put a child through, if you’re aware that there is something effecting your personal being you need to put a stop to it. There’s a large possibility it’s also effecting your family.
This family's lack of communication allows the situation to get out of control and in a downward spin that alone they can not handle. Problems do not just get better on their own. You must determine what they are and work out a solution to correct them. The child's skills for handling problems and working through them are not being developed. He is not learning to handle responsibilities but that it's okay to run from them. In relation to this notion, childhood encompasses a period where early stimulation is crucial for normal learning behaviors and cognitive brain development (Myers & DeWall, 2016). It is suggested that there be a myriad of engaging stimuli for children before they surpass the critical period at adolescence, so as to avoid the pruning of neural pathways essential to leading a normal and fulfilled life. Such stimuli may include experiences of sounds, sights, and tastes, while premature babies have shown rapid neurological development when provided with skin-to-skin contact with their mothers (Myers & DeWall, 2016). Similarly, a suggestion for parents when handling their infant is to establish familiarity and body contact in order to promote secure parental attachment. Brain development begins in week four of their first trimester in the womb. This is important because the development helps a child learn and grow, effecting their future learning, education, and social skills. Brain development begins right in the womb and continues to flourish after birth. A child’s brain develops through neurons and their connections by synapses. Neurons communicate at synapses through the use of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemicals sent between neurons as well as the muscles and organs they work with. They attach to receptors on receiving cells, translating into messages. Synapses, the connections in the mind between nerve cells, must be reinforced in order for them to remain active. For example, if a parent incorporates music into a child’s life, those connections will be strong, allowing the child to be musically talented, and more likely able to switch from instrument to instrument. On the other hand, if a parent does not reinforce musical skills on a child, they may not be able to ever learn how to play an instrument in the future. Furthermore, brain development is influenced by nutrition, speech, environment, nurture or neglect, and early childhood programs, all occurring in two periods of life. One major environmental impact that influences the development of a child is the neighborhood they are raised in. Within the neighborhood there are several other aspect of influence. Where a child is raised can affect their behavior, attitudes, emotions, personality, values, health, and so much more. This can be seen in their personal lives at home to their social lives around others in classrooms.
