A Facebook page may be set up in order to reach the community for financial support. In addition, art and craft supply stores such as Michaels and JoAnn’s Crafts may be willing to donate the items needed as a tax deduction. Personally I work with the homeless population right now. What I see as the biggest barrier is actually client participation. Social isolation within this community has reinforced non participation. I think it would be vital for social workers to communicate with fellow agencies and extract referrals of potentially willing clients. Individual client-focused sessions with each member, before the group begins might also be beneficial.

Group counseling is a viable new option emerging in the school setting. It can be effective and cost-effective for the schooling system by addressing a larger number of students and can be used to address a multitude of topics that children often face. One benefit of group counseling in the school setting is that it teaches children important socializing skills with their peers, as students often learn best from each other (Pérusse, 2009). It provides support, assists with emotional and problem-solving skills, and empowers children to be help each other as well as receive help from their peers (Thompson, 2012). The group setting may be perceived as less threatening, it helps bridge the gap in trust for children by providing a safe environment in which children can connect with others, and it allows for interactions that builds on social skills and the development of empathy for others (Thompson, 2012).
The method is appropriate in fostering group development but may lack in personal growth. According to Cory et al. (2010) , maintaining an appropriate balance between personal and group development presents an uphill task. Finally, peer supervision is one that involves groups facing the same experiences and provide an opportunity for professional growth.
Both groups can be seen as open systems because they "do not always maintain a steady state but [they are] constantly developing and moving towards a steady state or hemostasis" (Posthuma, 2002, p. 18). Moreover, group development can be evaluated from three stages. While both groups go through these stages, self-help groups experience them in a different way when compared to therapeutic groups. Many people believe they are their own person and are free to make their own choices; however, few explore just how much a group can influence their behavior. This realm of influential group power has been analyzed by several psychologist to see how far people will bend to stay within a group mentality. Psychologists Asch, Zimbardo, McEwan, and Lessing defined a group mind as a mass of people who ignore their own morals and conscious to act as one whole entity because of obedience and pressure. As a result, this creates the potential for the group to become a destructively dangerous force.
Pondering regarding my fellow classmates’ posts and additional article readings, I consider that groupthink, persuasion, and genetics should be additional concepts that I should have in mind when addressing individuals in a health psychology setting. Regarding groupthink, I must have in mind that changes on behaviors can be hindered if the environment does not help. Social Workers must be knowledgeable on how to facilitate and lead group sessions with clients. If the vice president suggested that the IT department should bypass the initial steps and immediately get to work on her requests my response would depend on what the request is. If it’s a minor request then yes, I would probably skip it as it won’t be necessary. However, if it was a major request then I would say no. I wouldn’t feel comfortable not having a preliminary investigation before jumping straight into the request if it’s a big request that could cause major changes.
Realizing that a group can become a high performance team is important. Accomplishing this goal is invaluable, advantageous and profitable. Once able to operate from a group to the high performing team is a great step into preparation into the big business world. Leaders and members must also realize not only how to accomplish this but that some problems will and can arise from different demographic characteristics and cultural diversity. That is if one is in such a group, which the probability would be quite high.
Working together with other people for an assignment can be a challenging task in some cases but luckily, I worked well with my group members. The decisions we made were anonymous although we paced ourselves individually when it came to completing our separate parts of the essay. As a group I believe that we connected well on an interpersonal level as all four of us were able to make alterations to any problem together . Furthermore, we did not give each other a chance to get angry at one another as we knew that this would only cause conflict that would disrupt our flow as a group. There was an equal divide in the amount of work that we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking behind. In addition, my group members were great at keeping each other informed if one of us were not able to attend a group meeting; emails were sent out informing us what we missed and ideas that were formulated. Everyone in my group worked according to deadlines and in synchronization with each other; we did not have to nag anyone to complete work or wait on a member to complete their task.
For this to occur however, requires an understanding of culture and society, as well as governance and process. In addition, I have also understood the power of strength based approach, how strength based therapy used in relationships an essential factor among group members. I view this class as the opportunity to practice how effectively work with groups and individuals to understand their own inherent power. Therefore, I learned the way of using a strengths-based approach; I can highlight the assets of group members, offering building blocks which can then lay the foundation of their social change. Furthermore, I understand change could be a mutual process, so in group therapy until group members became comfortable with each other to share their experiences giving them space and later help them to engage in along with group process.
