The role grit plays in success has become a key topic, spearheaded by Angela Duckworth, author of New York Times bestseller Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. Duckworth defines grit as “perseverance and passion for long-term goals.” The belief that we cannot rely solely on our potential, talent or intelligence to achieve success is one that resonates within me, both personally and professionally. The “secret sauce” to outstanding achievement is a special blend of passion and perseverance, and ultimately being driven by a purpose beyond the self. G| GROWTH MINDSET A growth mindset is one where anyone can be good at anything, as it is one’s actions and effort that is the hallmark of high achievement. The ability to confidently set a direction when you have the support of others is not the true test. Having the fortitude to stay the course until you establish the support of others demonstrates courage and resolve. This is a skill I find particularly necessary in marketing where our creative ideas are repeatedly evaluated. Strategies and creative concepts are deliberated. Campaign success is measured and critiqued for impact. Still, to push the boundaries in marketing, we must be willing to test ideas and fail fast. My resolve was tested with a pilot I launched in January, focused on driving adoption and usage of an immersion engine that allows customers to experience various Microsoft solutions in a hands-on format. Given the previous failures of these types of programs, there was an internal bias opposed to this type of motion. I simply had to trust my gut that this type of experience creates a tangible and practical scenario that resonates with our customers. I reviewed data at the end of February that was showing great impact, but I was cautious and continued to measure in March and April. By May, it was very evident that the select partners participating in my pilot and leveraging the immersive experience as a call-to-action in their go-to-market strategies were driving 58% of revenue within the respective solution areas. This pilot has been operationalized …show more content…
As illustrated in the example above, it required determination and diligence to create and launch a pilot that lacked the support of many of my colleagues. My ability to lead through ambiguity and opposition ultimately created measurable impact for our customers and our business. Through perseverance and passion—that “secret sauce” I noted in my opening—I was able to shift the mindset of my colleagues by validating success and driving impact to the business. Through purpose and planning that grounded my own self-assurance, I solidified the assurance my colleagues have in me, ultimately strengthening our professional
exis Hanson Professor Dosch English 101 3 May 2016 title In “The Downside of ‘Grit’: What Really Happens When Kids Are Pushed to Be More Persistent?”, Alfie Kohn; an author and lecturer, claims that not everything is worthwhile especially when going at a task for an extensive amount of time. He asserts that ‘grit’ (the passion and determination when pursuing long term goals) is becoming less persuasive and credible. Kohn states that grit can cause serious issues that have real consequences.
(1). By changing their mindset to a growth mindset can lead them to be successful students demonstrate consistency on their desire to learn. “Children who are praised their effort on the other hand, believe they are capable of taking on new challenges are more motivated, perform better and take failure as a stride”(1). Those who have a growth mindset have a positive mindset and take failure as a new opportunity to improve not only in their academic performance but also in their lives they will see failure as an opportunity for them to do better and change so they can be
“Over time, grit is what separates fruitful lives from aimlessness.”-John Ortberg this is a great quote that shows how grit is necessary in being successful in life. Grit is key to getting want you want and achieving dreams.
It starts with Courage which is describes as the ability of doing something that scare you everyday. The article states that they should stop being coddling and has to faced their failure so that they can learn from it and stand up so that they can go forward. The next point is the conscientiousness which is the main key because it is the ability of taking responsible and the conscience of doing what's right and importance. With conscientiousness in the human being character is describes as the big five such as being an open minded, agree with what is right, be conscience and make right decisions to achieve the work needed. Long term goals and endurance will bring you to your goals because it's the base of your work. Without it we can not make it to the end game. The more you have resilience and Optimism , the more you work harder. Your objectif, your surrounding your positives and negatives aspects of life give you Grit. It helps you to understand better what placed those. The role Grit play in your life and in our world of today. Just like it says in the article “ Optimism+confidence+creativity= Resilience =Hardiness=(+/-) Grit. The last point not the least, excellence vs perfection’ first of all nobody is perfect but as human we try to work hard so that we can make it to Excellency which guide us to the endgame. But a grittiest person is someone who doesn’t look for excellency only but work hard to meet perfection just like in a soccer game or an athletics sport. As an example, in a soccer team, there is always one soccer player that everyone love and want his team to win, so to do so all the team need to have Grit and be more gritteir than the other team to win.In addition, the article of Margaret Perlis and professor Duckworth about Grit can be benefit to college students because it can help them to make better decisions, to be able to have an object and to be grittier about what they want. They
In sum, a fixed mindset is not healthy in any environment whether at school or at the workplace. Mainly, such an attitude discourages effort and dedication as one believes that their life is predestined. A growth mindset is necessary because one has to constantly improve their chances of being successful by putting in a lot of effort. While praise is important, it should only be directed towards efforts of a child and not their perceived intelligence because of the adverse effects associated with such an
In pages 49-104 of How Children Succeed, Tough continues to assert on the importance of non-cognitive abilities as predictors to success. He explicates on the role of motivation and grit, and how these character traits will lead to academic success. Throughout the readings, Tough introduces and substantiates his assertions with the studies of the M&M experiment, coding- speed test, and Duckworth’s Grit Scale. While I do agree with Tough analysis for the significance and positive outcomes associated with motivation and grit, I do not in particular agree with his conclusions on the M&M experiment. In essence, I agree with Tough that development in character is crucial for short and long term success. However, I also believe his argument to lean towards the theoretical aspect, and does not provide the reader the tools for a heuristic approach to modify or refine the listed traits.
Merriam Webster says grit is defined as unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger. Angela Lee Duckworth’s opinion about grit being the key to success is true and correct. Her points about the kids that didn’t have the highest IQ but were the grittiest and were the most successful in the class showed that grit has to do with success. Another point that she makes is that talent doesn’t make you gritty. Just because someone has more talent than another person doesn’t mean that he or she is better. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. The final point that Angela makes is that growth mindset is a good way for building grit. Angela said that growth mindset is the belief that the ability to learn is not fixed, but can be changed with your effort.
In Carol Dweck’s,”Carol Dweck Revisits the ‘Growth Mindset’,” she reviews her idea of how changing students mindsets and effort allows them to become better strategists and to also take new approaches in advancing their learning abilities. By understanding fixed mindsets, success based on your own abilities, and a growth Mindset, success based on learning through failure, teachers can better accommodate students’ learning abilities and allow them to all learn through a growth mindset.
Dr. Denis Waitley, author of “The Psychology of Winning and The Seeds of Greatness,” says “the secret behind the successes of famous names such as Steven Spielberg, Walt Disney, and even William Shakespeare is passion.” The essence of Dr. Denis Waitley argument is that, you must have a passion for what you do. The words “the secret behind” insist that passion is the fire that ignites the desire passion to succeed. Throughout the fabric of time obtaining success has been defined many ways. Hard work, dedication, drive, luck and sheer determination, which are just a few that come to mind. So, In the Discussion of success, one controversial issue has been how to achieve success. On the one hand, journalist and author of the book “Outliers”, Malcom
In a growth mindset, “students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching, and persistence” (Clear). Students with a growth mindset consider failure and setbacks as a sign that they should strive to improve their abilities instead of a sign that they are not skilled (Clear). If people believe that intelligence can grow and improve, then they will most likely be active in their education and actually have motivation to learn more (Sieck). Students with a growth mindset are more likely to embrace challenges, persevere in the face of setbacks, and learn from criticism (“The Impact of a Growth Mindset”). These qualities allow these students to worry less about proving their intelligence through their grades and focus more on their
Whereas, inspire and challenge were on my least frequent. Describes a compelling image of the future, shows others how long-term interests can be realized by enlisting in a common vision, and takes risks even though there is a chance of failure scored the lowest (Kouzes & Posner, Leadership Practices Inventory: LPI®, 2013).
In the legal issue titled Employment discrimination, it describes a situation where abc corporation decides to respond to what it sees as a moral obligation to correct for past discrimination by adjusting pay differences among its employee. This raises a lot of ethical conflict with abc’s employees and its shareholders for numerous reasons. Employees were treated unfair, Abc company can no longer be trusted as a good work ethic company, they have a bad reputation for discrimination and there might be a likelihood the company will go out of business due to its actions.
The quality of unimaginable success is determined by grit. Despite confronting difficult life circumstances that delay the process individuals who are passionate, intelligent, and dedicated to one’s own success will continue maintaining consistency throughout their journey. Success is measured by an individuals’ commitment to effectively work hard towards life-changing goals. In the journal article “Grit: Perseverance and Passion for Long-term Goals,” Angela L. Duckworth conducts several studies in order to convey human’s capacity for higher achievements while still enduring challenges and failure. Although Duckworth’s research has proven that individuals who are less gritty tend to shift trajectory, I believe working hard and keeping “stamina” is essentially the key to achieving your goals (1088).

Everything that you will accomplish will only come if you are persistent, dedicated, and hard working. Those qualities make up a person’s grit, which should be taught in college composition classes at Central Methodist University.
