Unlike religious gods today, the Greek gods resembled human being in form, emotions, and suffered from the same dilemmas humans did throughout their lives. The Greeks believe in many gods and think they are very much like people. They have both supernatural powers and human weaknesses. The Olympian Gods live atop Mt. Olympus in Greece behind a gate of clouds. Mt. Olympus was known as the tallest mountain in Greece. The Gods and Goddesses watched the mortals down on earth, which they can visit any time, and they are responsible for the success or failure of human life. The Greeks worship their gods, prayed to them, gave offerings, and build temples to please the gods so they will not give any punishments. Zeus was known as the leader of all …show more content…
Ares was most notably referred to as the God of War; he represented the unpleasant aspects of battle. Ares represents the violent and physical untamed aspect of war, which is in contrast to his sister, Athena who represents military strategy and generalship as the goddess of intelligence. Spartan religion was interpreted to support the military state. The religious connection to the military can be first seen in the Greek Gods the Spartiates emphasised and worshipped. The principal Spartan Gods were Apollo, Artemis, Athena, Discouri and Zeus. Apollo, Artemis and Athena more explicitly demonstrate the militaristic nature of Sparta with the three Gods associated with victory, wisdom, and skill in battle. Even Gods that were not usually known for battle were given militaristic traits, like the statue of the Armed Aphrodite [Goddess of love] in Thornax. The principal God however would have been Apollo who was also a master archer and an athlete and was seen as the model youth and a guardian of young men. His twin sister, Artemis, was the guardian of young women. The worship of Apollo and Artemis and their high status reflects the military value of Spartan society in training the youth for future defence. Such devotion to Apollo and Artemis can be seen in the Sanctuary of Apollo at Amyclae where coins in the likeness of Apollo were found and at the Temple of Artemis Orthia where votive offerings were found and it was known to be a centre for blood sacrifices.
Ares is the Greek god of war. His parents are Zeus and Hera and he is one of the powerful Twelve Olympians. Although both Ares and his half-sister Athena are war gods, Ares represents the cruel, physical, and violent part of war, while Athena represents the strategic part of war. He was married to the beautiful goddess of love, Aphrodite, in the Iliad. However, Ares was only her lover in the Odyssey.

Apollo is an interesting god in Greek mythology with an interesting background. An interesting story about him is when he followed Mother Earth’s Python to Mount Parnassus and “skinned the great snake and saved the hide for a gift.” This caught my attention because I always saw Apollo as a calm, forgiving god. Killing the python seemed very aggressive and I didn’t see that coming from Apollo. Another shocking moment is when Apollo challenges a satyr, Marsyas, to a competition to see who is the better musician and rigs it so that he will win. After Marsyas lost, Apollo “flayed Marsyas alive and nailed his skin to a tree. This act was quite brutal and I didn’t expect it to be done by Apollo. By fixing the competition you see how immature and

My Greek god is Hercules. I’m sure all of you know him from the movie created by Disney. We can all admit that he is one of the most famous gods out there. He is the god of war and he had many battle encounters throughout his lifetime. Hercules was a hero to the Roman people by performing a handful of deeds. He was also very popular for having a tremendous amount of strength and defeating many enemies. He is one of the greatest warriors in history.Hercules is the son of Zeus and Alcmene and was born in Thebes, Greece. When Hercules was younger he was somewhat clumsy and lost, he didn’t know how to control and deal with his powers. Some of his siblings were Apollo (god of light), Ares (god of war) and Celesta (goddess of death). Hercules was the
The older of the two, Ancient Greece was a civilization for three centuries, from 800 B.C. to 500 B.C. Ancient Greece advanced in art, poetry, and technology. Ares was born to Zeus and Hera, and was commonly worshipped as the god of war. Many people associate him with Athena, however their methods and strategies for fighting were completely different from another. Unlike Athena, Ares used violence to solve issues, and some said he cause too much unnecessary bloodshed, which is why many disliked Ares. Ares was humiliated when he was caught sleeping with Aphrodite by Hephaestus. Hephaestus caught them with a finely made net and then brought all the gods to come watch, however the goddesses decided to not visit.
Throughout studying many myths, I came up with many new observations. Many questions came into my mind about these myths. Greek mythology takes us back to a time when people had a connection with nature and when nature played a major role in people’s lives. The religious beliefs of the people who wrote the myths are found in the background of these myths; however, they are not to be read like religious texts. The myths try to offer explanations of “how”, which makes us think deeply about the purpose of these myths and the questions they draw to our minds. According to the myths we studied in class, the world created the gods, not the other way around. The gods were always created in the image of man, which shows how much men were important in their society. Furthermore, many of these Greek myths show us the difference between the views of the Greek then and our view towards many aspects of the society, including nature. Monsters appear in Greek myths and have different representations and roles. Greek mythology reflects a view of the Greeks towards the world and how certain aspects of their lives are similar and different to modern society.
