Grand Theft Auto Video Games, board games, sports games have always been around ever since we can remember, from centuries ago to the present. Except for the fact, centuries ago, they did not have the technology to change the way games could be played by people. Today’s advancements have the technology to construct different kinds of games, to all sorts of board games, video games, and even to virtual reality games. They have also changed the way people interact with them in either a positive or in a negative way. Positive games such as family type board games have affected society in a reasonable matter to assemble people to come together and have a magnificent time with one another. There are countless amounts of positive video games, board …show more content…
The amount of time video games played in a period a day can cause health issues as well, not eating right, dehydration, sleep deprivation, aggression, etc. While some games have educational content, many of the most popular games emphasize negative themes that could promote the killing of people or animals, the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol, criminal behavior, disrespect for authority and the law, sexual exploitation and violence toward women, racial, sexual, and foul language and obscene gestures. (XXXX) An excessive amount of playing can lead to addiction and degrade in social behavior. Research done by Bushman says, “violent video games decrease pro-social behavior, such as helping or cooperating with others, and decrease feelings of empathy and compassion for others.” (XXXX) Video games have become more stable to withstand long hours of being played at a time. Therefore, aggression and sleep deprivation can cause some serious health problems. Bushman did some research on how aggression levels grew if children playing violent video within a three-day course and his research stated, “The first day they already showed aggression, the second more, and the third day, even more, signs of aggression.” (XXXX) Aggression from video games doesn’t always affect the person that same day, but in the long run, it could create a problem. Those negative effects …show more content…
When people think about video games, they never see the negative side of things they only see the fun side of it. If people look at the negative side of things they wouldn’t be letting their children play such violent games. For example, we have Grand Theft Auto which tends to promote the violence of gun use, stealing, and even having sex. The game is so realistic that gives people ideas to try these things. If you look at our society nowadays, you see so much violence, and gun use and games like Grand Theft Auto could be one of the reasons that give people the idea to do such a thing. This game is played by many people of different ages, which is not great for the young children’s mind, the game uses aggressive language, the game was intended for children over 18 to play not for young children. Games evolved ways to make them more fun by including a multiplayer; therefore anyone can play and interact with different people. Makes people wonder what children could be acting like when they come across a stranger with high profanity and cyberbullying. That could lead to many things such as antisocial, low self a steam, brainwashing and or the opposite, to becoming of negative behavior social skills because they are given a prime example of bad behavior and could eventually think that it is ok. Getting used negative content by players on the internet could lead to teaching the consumer the
Most games today that children play depict some type of violence. However, parents neglect that the games have warnings for violence, language, and even nudity. In my own personal experience, kids will ask for the most trending games at the time and parents will buy the game to satisfy the needs and wants of the children.
People have always been looking for a reason why horrible things happen. The media is quick to blame video games as the target and cause of many shootings that have occurred, ever since Columbine and Quake. People have been blaming video games for violence for years now, ever since violent video games have been made. News reports blame video games more and more for each shooting, telling the public how this person played video games for x amount of hours a day, and that video games caused him or her to shoot people, and how video games encourage and reward violence. Anti-video game lobbyists have been campaigning to have violence removed from video games, citing resources that they themselves have created as reasons for such, poorly done studies where they confirm that kids are more aggressive through how much hot sauce they put on someone’s fries. While unbiased studies of video games and their links to violence are hard to come by, recent research has shown that video games do not in fact have a casual link to violence, and may even have the opposite effect. Violent video games have nearly no link to violence in teens or adults.
At this day in age we bask in the luxury of having easy access to advanced technology at our disposal. From the World Wide Web, to cell phones, music, movies and video games the human race has thought of any and everything to keep us entertained. Over the years studies have shown reasonable concerns regarding the long-term effects of video games. These games can desensitize gamers to real life violence, which is usually seen in the younger crowd. The studies especially hit on the games containing player-on-player violence. Though these games are extremely entertaining and can get kids to settle down for a while, if not properly supervised, they can produce adverse effects. Other studies have shown that video games can be used as way to yield positive outcomes such as, good problem solving skills, cooperation in a group and the ability to flow. Although there has been psychological research on children learning through the actions of others some believe that children are automatically able to distinguish between what is just a game and what is reality. The longer they are allowed on their game system the more they become convinced that their games are real. Some researchers believe violent video games can channel the aggression of the child but the parents are to blame for what happens to the child after playing an excessive amount over a period of time. Children can become preoccupied with these violent video games which have been proven to be the cause of poor social skills, uncontrollable aggression and a false reality.
The second reason video games are an issue is that videogames have been linked to a variety of mental and physical ailments. The most common physical health problems tend to be arthritis from barely moving the fingers while using a keyboard or game controller, and a variety of eye problems due to constantly staring at the game screen. The most frequently occurring mental problems range from delusions to schizophrenia and becoming desensitized to violence. Keegan says that "repeated exposure to violent images can make people less sensitive to the effects of violence" (1). All of these ailments, both mental and physical, can and will occur in many people, but this statement only holds true if the player spends much of his or her free time playing video games. The essay “Violence and the Media: A Psychological Analysis,” shows how the number of hours spent watching a television program may be more influential than the nature of the program itself (Javier 4). While this statement refers ...
Videogames are amazing they promote creativity, team-work and social interaction. Video games actually work to increase how good your eyesight is. One study done by scientist’s Daphne Bavelier and her team found that playing five to fifteen hours of action games (e.g., Call of Duty) a week increased how good the participants vision was in two ways "The first way is that they 're actually able to resolve small detail in the context of clutter… The other way that they are better is actually being able to resolve different levels of grey”. Sure games have violence in them but honestly what doesn’t, films and TV are chock full of it, heck even Tom and Jerry promote violence and animal abuse plus there is a reason that those big shiny red “18” stickers are put on games so that it is clearly shown that children aren 't supposed to be given access to these specific types of game. As for the “waste of time” nothing is really a waste of time if you gain something from it such as
Studies have shown that there is a wide variety of physical and behavioral effects that video games can have on their players.
Gaming is a recent issue that society has become aware of and interested in lately. But the question is, do video games actually help us or not and what do they teach us? That is what I will be discussing throughout my talk today by addressing both sides of the argument and finally concluding on what the answer is to this commonly asked question.
By far the largest concern of technology today is video games. There have been so many experiments and studies to try and figure out if video games have a negative or positive effect on our children. A growing body of research is linking violent video game play to aggressive cognitive, attitudes and behaviors (D.A. Gentile, 2004). Video games can obviously be dangerous for our children causing aggression, bad performances in school and obesity. Although we cant blame all of these problems on the use of video game...
Mass shootings are often blamed on video games for inducing a violent behavior, claiming the behavior wasn 't present before. Some games intentionally cause distress in the player and activate their fight or flight reaction, causing a habit of that response. Video games are not like the daily life and you are able to do things you can 't normally do which causes the individual to try to make their game their life. Are video games harming our health? Video Games can definitely be good for someone 's health, because it stimulates brain growth, relieves stress and strengthen social
...ain and the health. In fact, violence video games influence children’s behavior badly, thus the child led to be aggressive. Many parents suffer from video games, due to the influences of it on their children. It is a really important topic because many parents are suffering from the influences of video games and I personally know a friend who had epilepsy from playing video games for a long hours daily.
Violent video games do not cause behavior problems. It is possible that some people have weak health issues as they are on video games or technology too long instead of getting good enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and needing to get out more to have fun with family and friends. Plus, when players are feeling tired or anxious, they simply need to stop playing and take a break from video games for a while, at least until they feel better. Another possible solution is when a person needs to take a break from playing video games, they can spend their time outside with nature instead of on a video game.
Video games are not considered as a serious addiction amongst teenagers and adults, often being compared to severe cases of addiction, such as drug abuse or alcohol abuse that may result in the appearance of a decrease in the severity of the addiction. However, video game addiction is a serious matter and has unhealthy consequences for an individual 's life and their health; spending too much time playing video games can take a great toll on one 's physical and mental well-being. Continuing unhealthy patterns of video game activity for prolonged periods of time can result in mental health issues, physical health problems, and a decline in a social life.
Many people believe that video games change people and mislead them to do bad things, such as drugs and alcohol, but it is the opposite. Gaming prevents people from such acts and actually helps to keep them away from the substances. Lots of people, mainly parents, believe that video games harm people so they try to keep their children away from them. In reality, video games make your life better. Video games can provide many benefits to your lifestyle as “numerous academic studies indicate that playing video games has many psychological and even physical benefits” (Guarini). Gaming helps stimulate the brain and advances your problem solving abilities. There are disadvantages to gaming, which is true, but the amount of benefits outweigh them by far.
This being said, it can be proven that advancements come with positive and negative effects. The video games of twenty-five years ago have evolved into something different and in some cases something dark. Research has shown in many cases that video games have negative effects such as: increased aggressive behavior, desensitization, and poor physical heath on adolescents. Many researches also think part of the problem arises because adolescents do not receive enough parental supervision with these games. After discussing these negative effects it will be obvious that more vigilance and regulations are warranted.
...know that excessive playing of video games can cause decreased social skills, deterioration in health and increased aggressive behavior. That doesn’t mean video games are bad that just means when we our self’s play video games or our children we should take the extra step in preventing these possible problems. Children and younger adults love playing video games for an extended period of time so maybe it would be better taking short breaks during a long session of game play to prevent hurting your eyes. Also chop you up some healthy snacks so if you get hungry while playing your game you have something healthy to eat instead of just junk food. Always remember when playing a violent video game to leave everything you see in the game. These just maybe a few things to remember when playing video games and to prevent future problems that playing video games can cause.
