The four traits of a game include “goals, rules, feedback and voluntary participation” (McGonigal 21). The goals give a sense of purpose, rules promote strategic thinking, feedback gives the motivation to keep playing, and voluntary participation makes the game feel safe and pleasurable. “Pong,” one of the first video games to come into the mainstream that consisted of a vertical sliding bars and a small square block that acted like a ball; the goal was to prevent the ball from going off of the screen. The game required less than 8kb of memory in 1972. Today, games are requiring upwards of 30 GB, which is 30,000,000kb! Another example is an average size of a picture taken by modern smartphones are 3000kb. This kind of memory is needed to increase the polygon count so then it can be a more accurate representation of what reality looks like. This makes the object appear smoother to our eyes because it becomes increasingly more difficult to see the all the individual shapes and thus gives a higher level of detail. With video games rising in popularity overall having “83% of young people ages 8-18 have a video console at home” (Glazer 941). When including smartphone games, there are 183 million active gamers in the United States alone; that’s more than half the population! This shows that there could be a profound …show more content…

The issue at stake on page 12 of Fred D’Agostino’s, “The Ethos of Games” is simply whether or not formalism, as interpreted through the dichotomization thesis, provides a satisfactory account of games. In this context, formalism means that a game can be defined solely by the formal rules of that specific game (D’Agostino, p. 7). At the same time, according to the dichotomization thesis, the rules of any game can be definitively separated into two categories, but never both (p. 11). One of those categories being regulative rules, which can be defined as any rule that invokes a penalty (p. 11). The other category, constitutive rules, are simply the set of rules that define a game (p. 11). Given these definitions, D’Agostino argues that through the dichotomization thesis, formalism does not provide a proper account of games (p. 12).
There are many people who say that videogames and TV will rot your brain and cause brain damage. Plenty of research and articles are against children playing video games, but there are some that are in favor of video games, and that number is growing every day. Video games can have some medicinal uses from helping patients in physical therapy to improving ones vison. Many people do not see these uses and for every one for video games there are five who are against it, however as that number is slowly growing.
The second reason video games are an issue is that videogames have been linked to a variety of mental and physical ailments. The most common physical health problems tend to be arthritis from barely moving the fingers while using a keyboard or game controller, and a variety of eye problems due to constantly staring at the game screen. The most frequently occurring mental problems range from delusions to schizophrenia and becoming desensitized to violence. Keegan says that "repeated exposure to violent images can make people less sensitive to the effects of violence" (1). All of these ailments, both mental and physical, can and will occur in many people, but this statement only holds true if the player spends much of his or her free time playing video games. The essay “Violence and the Media: A Psychological Analysis,” shows how the number of hours spent watching a television program may be more influential than the nature of the program itself (Javier 4). While this statement refers ...
Video games, with violent content, do not cause violent behavior. However, in the case of an individual experiencing, violent, disruptive, and dangerous behaviors, video games may contribute to an outburst of violence.
Lately there have been increasing amounts of people that say that violent video games are causing a number violent actions. To some extent this is true, but there are also studies that say games help people release their aggression in an appropriate way. I would tend to agree with the later.
Video games have completely changed childhoods of many children across the globe. A video game involves visual feedback from a TV or computer monitor. Ever since the 1970s, video games have continuously improved by improving the graphics and sound. During the 1970s, there were many arcade games that were not advanced compared to today’s games. By 2016, video games are produced in three-dimensional imaging and are incredibly realistic. For example, Madden 2016 is a football game based on all the athletes in the National Football League. The graphics from Madden 2000 to Madden 2016, have improved drastically due to technology. Therefore, video game creators make billons of dollars by selling them to individuals across the world. However, there

The average adolescent spends a major part of the normal week watching or interacting with some form of the media’s products. Video games are one of these media based mediums and have become increasingly popular since the 1980’s. According to a report in Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, "Female gamers spent an average of 44 minutes playing on the weekdays and one hour and four minutes playing on the weekends, and male gamers spent an average of 58 minutes playing on the weekdays and one hour and 37 minutes playing on the weekends" ("Video Game Play Among Adolescents"). What can we understand from this evidence? The fact is that adolescents, male or female, are spending tremendous amounts of time each day sitting in front of a screen with a controller in hand.
Video games have come a long way. They have evolved from the simple game of Pong into a complex, multi-platform, multi-genre, multi-billion dollar industry.
There have been so many experiments and studies to try and figure out if video games have a negative or positive effect on our children. A growing body of research is linking violent video game play to aggressive cognitive, attitudes and behaviors (D.A. Gentile, 2004). The 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of Video games can obviously be dangerous for our children, causing aggression, bad performances in school and obesity. Video games have been around about 50 years and they contribute a big part of the U.S. economy. People interact with video games every day throughout different ways, such as cell phone devices, computers, consoles or whatever which has a screen on it. In fact, it has always affected people’s lives. However, not so many people understand the benefits of video games. With video games, people can not only relieve themselves from stress and suffering, but it also improves people’s social experiences while they are exchanging and absorbing knowledge with other people; more than that, people can learn many other things from video games which can help them to achieve great things in lives.

Violent video games do not cause behavior problems. It is possible that some people have weak health issues as they are on video games or technology too long instead of getting good enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and needing to get out more to have fun with family and friends. Plus, when players are feeling tired or anxious, they simply need to stop playing and take a break from video games for a while, at least until they feel better. Another possible solution is when a person needs to take a break from playing video games, they can spend their time outside with nature instead of on a video game.
Many people believe that video games change people and mislead them to do bad things, such as drugs and alcohol, but it is the opposite. Gaming prevents people from such acts and actually helps to keep them away from the substances. Lots of people, mainly parents, believe that video games harm people so they try to keep their children away from them. In reality, video games make your life better. Video games can provide many benefits to your lifestyle as “numerous academic studies indicate that playing video games has many psychological and even physical benefits” (Guarini). Gaming helps stimulate the brain and advances your problem solving abilities. There are disadvantages to gaming, which is true, but the amount of benefits outweigh them by far.
Video games are used to improve physical health. Playing video games does not mean being inactive. New and improved video games involve and incorporate different types of movement in the actual game. Certain video games can reduce fat causing global weight loss (Recio 143). By turning game systems into exercise, new generation games draw people into activities and get heart rates pumping. Schools have incorporated video games into part of their physical education program. Children’s waists lines have gone down by inches due to playing video games in gym class.
