According to Allen and Derr (2015), natural surveillance is included in the physical design giving the capacity for detection opportunities (p. 112). Therefore, security, location and function of the Grand Gulf Nuclear station is important for access control systems and duress alarms. An access control system for this station allows for the detection of authorized personnel and allowing selected personnel access to only area need. Additionally, as a part of the high-tech element are duress alarms and these alarms allow for exposure of any elements linked into the river or unauthorized personnel. Furthermore, this increases the opportunity to recognize people attempting to commit a crime and limits access to the premises (Allen & Derr, 2015, p. 112). This station has numerous gates and barriers and mechanical and electronic turnstiles. As elements under low-tech gates and barriers are important for hardening the area. Allen and Derr (2015) noted that target hardening increases the efforts of an offender to commit a crime, which helps prevent crime (p. 213). Consequently, mechanical and electronic turnstiles entries and exist are part of the target hardening ensure that criminal are not able to enter the facility.
No-Tech
Over the years, the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station has seen an increase in the amount of security violation and accidental spillage of hazardous waste into the Mississippi River. Within the no-tech elements, staff training and security awareness program, are important to continue to improve countermeasures of this station. These two areas allow for better safety and security for the station and build the efficiency of the station employers. This also ensures the surrounding communities the importance of staff training and security awareness and their safety in the case of an attack or incident.
