The basic purpose of teaching the target language through this method is to be able to read literature writen in the target language. This can be reached by learning grammar rules and vocabulary of the target language. The main principles on which the grammar- translation method is based are the following:
• Grammar is taught deductively and than practiced through translation excercises.
• The primary skills to be developed are reading and writing
• Hardly any attention is paid to speaking and listening
• The goal of foreign language learning is to gain the ability to understand the texts written in the foreign language
• Teacher's correction is the only way to make students produce the right forms of the foreign language
• Vocabulary is learnt from bilingual word lists
• Mastering the grammar of the foreign language is essential in order for students to understand the written target language
The procedure of teaching English is a combination of activities of teaching grammar and translation. The teaching begins with english rules, vocabulary items, translation. The teacher explains the rules and then students put simple words into slots of grammatical rules. The grammar rules are memorized as units. The students are expected to be conscious of the grammatical rules of the target language. Usualy the sequence of the teaching materials is based on the easiness of the rules. It's grammatical syllabus is gradd from the easy grammatical rles to more difficult ones. Very little teaching is done in the target language. 7. Memorization. Students are given lists of target language vocabulary words and their native language equivalents and asked to memorize them. They are also required to memorize grammar rules and grammar paradigms such as verb conjugations.

9. Composition. The teacher gives students a topic to write about in the target language. The topic is based upon some aspect of the reading passage of the lesson. Sometimes, instead of creating a composition, students are asked to prepare a precis of the reading passage.
In “English Composition for International Students University of Cincinnati”, Scott Esposito shares his experience of reading a book that is written in another language. Esposito was reading a book that is written in Spanish language. He used a dictionary during reading this book. However, Esposito took a long time to read the book, as he is not a native speaker of Spanish. His Spanish improved while reading this book. So he became able to read faster and understood the grammar easier. Esposito faced several challenges during reading the book. Frist challenge, he was unable to understand new vocabulary so he had to look them up every time. Also it was hard to him to guess what do words mean, since his knowledge in Spanish was still poor. First, I want to concentrate on the Grammar-Translation Method. Personally I think that many teachers use this technique while teaching a foreign language, but they do not even realize it. We may contend that it is the most common method, due to the fact that it is considered to be quite easy. I contend there is nothing more complicated than to give students a passage to translate from one language to another. Is it interesting or challenging for the students? I do not think so. I remember I did a lot of translation at school and that was not my favorite activity. Besides, it was hard for us to find any purpose in them. Apart from that, most of my classmates were simply bored. Sometimes it was too difficult and we had to spend many hours to find the meaning of a particular word in a dictionary. Without a doubt, that was not the way I wanted to learn English. Furthermore, translating a literary text was something entirely useless for me. And although we were rarely exposed to such a translation...
Each component carries sufficient weight in imparting English language instructional system. Among the resources, teacher is the most influential one as s/he has the persuasive powers to help students acquire the language skills at stress-free and cozy atmosphere. Teacher with a smile would be the welcoming milestone. Teacher’s proficiency over the English language and knowledge over student psychology would profoundly contribute towards better language skill acquisition, as it involves two major components teaching and learning. Teaching English is different from teaching other subjects. The notion of treating teaching English and other subjects equally needs modification as language acquisition is not merely an understanding of a pack of information. English is a set of discourses that involve a learner to use the same for expression and communication. In the ESL classroom the teacher’s part is bit much challenging in involving a learner’s participation in language
English language study requires learners mastering several parts including phonology, grammar, vocabulary etc. Among them, grammar studying plays an increasingly vital role in English language learning in secondary school. Generally, the traditional way of teaching involves a teacher-commanding class which teacher spent half class on the certain grammar points and using exercises to evaluate whether students fully master them. However, the old approach usually results in a class s filled with bored and exhausted students who may give wonderful result in tests but failed in communicating events. Since language functions on communicating, new teaching method should consider this purpose more than in the old days.
In most institutions of learning today, the classes are made up of students from different ethnic backgrounds. These have different traditions and also speak different languages. In a typical classroom, the majority of the students will speak the same language. The teacher must then employ strategies which will accommodate all the students in the class. This will ensure that every learner gets the best quality of education. This will enable them to be better prepared for career and expressing themselves. In this paper, strategies to assist learners of the English language in their literal development for third grade learners. In the paper, three strategies that can be used by the teacher will be discussed. New strategies and research that will help the English language learners to gain in depth mastery of the language will also be discussed. Due to the widespread learning of the English language in most schools, addressing issues of the language learners is of vital importance. Teachers should have the understanding that cultures are what give someone identity and therefore no student should leave their culture for another. Instead, there should be the blending of different cultures so that students can appreciate and learn from each other.

Practice and application are important when developing language skills. A good grammar teacher will allow students time to practice and test students in order to find out where they are at in acquiring a language. Students should be subjected to mini grammar tests that hold little to no grade value, but are helpful to the teacher so that he or she may assess where their student stands in that course. Tests are ways to assess where students are at in the learning process, what they have learned, and what they need to improve in the class. It is important that students are made aware
Moreover, it is described that by mastering vocabulary, students can express their ideas, understand and develop the other four basic competences. Thus, it could be said that the vocabulary mastery is one of the main factors to master English language, but what do vocabulary mastery and knowing a word entail? At the most general level, knowing a word involves “form, meaning and use” (Nation, 2001, p.26).
Syntax is the study of how words are combined to create phrases and causes in the sentences of a specific language (Freeman and Freeman, 2014). Syntax helps us to make clear sentences that “sound right,” where words, phrases, and clauses each serve their function and are correctly ordered to form and communicate a complete sentence with meaning. The rules of syntax combine words into phrases and phrases into sentences. Not only does it focus on the correct word order for a language, but it also helps show the relationship between the meaning of a group of words. Without proper syntax, a sentence can be meaningless. It is key to understand that while every language does have certain syntax, the syntax does vary from language to language. It
This paper seeks to identify a set of core language needs of target learners and help facilitate learners to meet these needs.
Moving through the history of approaches and techniques in foreign language teaching clearly indicates that the focus and goal shifted gradually from “reading” to “speaking”. According to Richard & Rodgers (2003), the same method utilize in teaching Latin were applied in teaching English, meaning the goal was not learning to speak the foreign language but to translate sentences into it or from it and speaking was limited to reading the translated sentences out loud. This was the beginning of Grammar Translation Method where little or no attention is paid to speaking and grammatical accuracy was the
Students need to work on and acquire the academic language. It includes grammar, proper punctuations and vocabulary. Some language has relevance to text types that has specific meaning depending to format, tone, and the structure of grammars. Meaning of the word depends on the situation whether in a question or discussion form (Herr, 2007).
