My goal tonight is to motivate you and to encourage others to get their diploma. I'll start with a quote:
Education is what you have left over after you have forgotten everything you have learned.
Let me repeat that.
Education is what you have left over after you have forgotten everything you have learned.
I think that quote applies to me because I had to forget what I was taught growing up. And, what I was left with is my diploma and education, but more so, wisdom.
I'm up here tonight because some people in this community opened up their ears, hearts, and homes to me. I was struggling when I first came to County High. I had failed seventh grade, actually I passed with 'F's" but my mom held me back. I was a very depressed and suicidal kid back then. I spent a lot of time in other people's homes who could provide me with comfort and guidance. County High's staff was patient with me. Susan M. was my middle school teacher at and she recently reminded me of how I used to sit in corners or under desks to do my school work or study. But soon I came out from the shadows and with some positive support, I went on to Lake County High School with A's and B's. I went to another school but I didn't make it there.
When you lose your wind, you are ready to give up.
You think that there is no point in trying.
You don't believe you can do it.
But County High is home to me. Bob and Jane are my parents and the students are my brother and sisters. Over the years that I have been at County High my self-esteem has risen. My determination has become stronger and my future has become much brighter. Now I didn't just come to County High a wreck and leave a happy little flower. It's been a process with many stepping stones from caring people in this community. I remember my friend's brother offering to pay for a school sport if I wanted to join. I didn't, but just that offer opened a door. I didn't know I could do that, I thought it was for other kids. Not for people like me.
I wasn't aware of many things in my teenage years because I hadn't experienced them with my family.
Education is the act or process of acquiring knowledge to prepare oneself intellectually for mature life. It is the standard foundation for most youth growing up. A good solid education background is what can take you to different heights as they become young adults. “The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives” quoted by Robert Maynard Hutchins. The statement is true to the form of getting an education prepares you for a prosperous life ahead. Knowledge is power and knowledge is needed to have stability within your life. In “Bodega Dreams” by Ernesto Quinonez education is the basis of entire society. But does it
Education is in itself a concept, which has changed over the millennia, can mean different things and has had differing purposes according to time and culture. Education may take place anywhere, is not constrained by bricks and mortar, delivery mechanisms or legislative requirements. Carr (2003. p19) even states, “education does not necessarily involve teaching”. Education, by one definition, is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life (education, n.d.).
Education is one of the most important heritage that a father can give to his son. Education is the greatest inheritance a parent can leave to the son, being educated is not to acquire knowledge but more than that it be lack of ignorance. Someone once said that “I do not read for more intelligence but rather to be less ignorant”, these words have a world between them, because many people study for a degree not for gain knowledge. Education can be defined as the wealth of knowledge acquired by an individual that would be a common way to define which education, but is also the most seen college students? This is the biggest mistake of most college students, which go to colleges
them. Education is more than just teaching, but it is the knowledge, and wisdom that is gained
Education means a variety of things to any individual because it is the route to fulfilling dreams that one would not have otherwise been able to believe was possible. Just as food provides nourishment to the stomach, happiness satisfaction to the soul, education is the dietary supplement to the brain. Education endows one with the strength and motivation to have a dream, as a consequence one is able to lead a life filled with happiness. One is able to have contentment because with the attainment of an educated mind they are cognizant that they can achieve all of what they have ever imagined. As children we are taught to dream what we want to become and as an adolescent, we are able to live to become just as what we have imagined. The very essence of what we seek to become is educated in a sense because we can only become a step closer to making our reality come into existence without beginning with education.
I not only had the fear of starting high school, like everyone else, but I also had the fear of starting a brand new school, with no one I knew, people who have known each other since kindergarten. I didn’t know what it was going to be like, if I would fit in, if making new friends was going to be easy, or even how big the school was. I was never involved in sports, my freshman year I tried out for the cheerleading team; I MADE IT! It made me feel excellent about myself that there wasn’t much competition, and it didn’t make me feel like I wasn’t good enough. It being in a little community and little school, 150 in the graduating class, made it nice that there was constantly a lot of school spirit and the community was constantly included in everything the school had been going on such as; any games for any kind of sports, any fundraisers or any volunteer work that needed to be done. All the students and teachers were greatly welcoming; it wasn’t highly diverse at all. If I would have graduated from there, there would have been only four African americans in my graduating class. From experience and in my opinion, racism is a big cause of violence and causes more drugs; this school didn’t have any violence and very little drug use from what I saw of students. Everyone knowing everyone made it easier for everyone to get along, there was never much drama, even being a girl. The small
“Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” ― Malcolm X. (http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/education?page=2) Education, to me, was a passport that I had almost missed. Education was a plane that was ready to take off and leave me behind. This is my story of how much my education means to me.
Education is the process of receiving knowledge, which is gained through various ways, but the most popular way is through school. Usually in society school dedicates how much education is received and individuals are ranked within a society based on an understanding of the taught material. As McCandless said “You don't need to worry about me. I have a college education” (Krakauer 52). I would agree with that there is a difference between education and school because there are many other ways education can be gained other than going to an institution. However, school institutions provide the most basic and constant access to education to many. Education is earned through traveling the world and learning about other cultures or other forms of
Education is an ongoing process; remains through all the stages of life. Knowledge is deep-sea and one can never claim to have acquired all of it. Sim...
As soon as I read this quote I could not help but apply it to my teaching career. I do not believe that our students are empty vessels waiting to be filled with information and knowledge -rather students are partially-filled vessels with a wealth of experience, knowledge and preconceptions. My role as an educator, rather than as a teacher, is to engage the students to tap into this knowledge and challenge them, in order to further build on what they already know. I believe that the educational system should be tailored for each and every student according to their needs in order to bring out their full potential.
However, the amounts of knowledge that I was getting made me forget about the challenges and made me hungry for more. The more I learn, the more I find out that there is no limit to education and as long as I live I could keep on learning. Therefore, as long as I’m capable of learning I will continue to learn and my education journey will be an endless one. Most people have a different perspective on what an educated person is and according to Hudson Valley Sudbury School “education sometimes happens at school and sometimes doesn’t, and knowledge can be a sign of an education, but neither are education itself. Simply put, education as the willingness and ability to learn for the sake of learning. The truly educated person learns constantly without supervision or external reward”(Burdik, 2014). I completely agree with this code. I believe education is the willingness to learn not for the sake of rewards, but for the ability to expand our thoughts and ideas and also to solve problems and to know the unknown.
There is no one single definition for what education really is. Experts and scholars from the beginning have viewed and commented about education in different ways. The definition mostly agreed upon was that education is an acquisition or passing of skills, behavior or knowledge from an institution to another. This institution can either be a person, a school, a family or even the society. If we go in the ancient meaning and the ideology of education, it means to lead out of ignorance. In other words, education or knowledge in this sense was light and education brought the person out of the dark. The purpose and ideology of education is therefore to bring out the potential of a person and pass on knowledge
Education is a very important aspect of the lives of all people all over the world. What we learn, not just in the classroom, shapes who we are. We take our education everywhere we go. We use it when talking to our buddies about sports or music, we use it while solving a math problem, we use our education while debating with our family whether or not we should watch TV or go to the movies. Our education is the foundation of who we are, since every decision we make and every thought we think is dependent on what we know. Imagine how different the world would be if everyone craved learning to such a degree that at lunch tables all over the world the topic of conversation isn't who likes who, or how drunk someone got over the weekend, but it would be what books were read over the weekend, and what new ideas were thought of. This crave for learning would be an ideal but still suggests need for improvement with the current educational system. It seems that the problem with education is that somewhere along the lines the human race forgot (assuming they, at one point, understood how valuable information is) that learning is not just a mandatory process, but also an opportunity to transcend and open the gateway to a better understanding.
In a person’s life, they learn from everything around them, and take in everything that they see, and learn from all of it. Hopefully, they get a good result so that they may be able to make a difference in the world around them. I feel that I have to tools to make the changes that I want, and the knowledge to know how to make these changes. I look toward the future with a bright outlook, and know that to keep learning is the key to making my bright outlook the truth. For my future and the future of people younger and older than me, education will always be the key.
Education: a priceless and powerful commodity. The human race has attempted to understand the role of education and how we digest information for centuries. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle devoted much of their lives to analyzing the foundations of education and how to teach subsequent generations. Socrates attempted to find the true meaning of education through a constant attempt to discover the truth in all aspects of life. Plato, on the other hand, viewed education as a way to attain the perfect society, hoping that educating the youth would improve future generations. Believing that education was necessary for intellectual virtue, Aristotle sought out a well-rounded education that created a balanced human being. Unfortunately, education
