“Mom, why do i feel like the kids don’t like me?” “Mom I made some new friends today!” “Mom, can I see a therapist?” “ Mom, my teacher helped me when I was sad today!” “Mom, am I worth anything?” “Mom, thank you.” Even though we fight at times, my parents are the reason I am standing here today. Not only them, but fellow students and teachers have helped me not only educationally but personally as well. IHM has taught me if I wanted something I had to work hard through it. Supporters was the only thing I needed, besides books and my iPad. Through all the stress I had supporters with me to help when I needed it. Let’s start near the beginning of my middle school life. Chaos and energy was in the air as the teachers threw bags, with most likely with special things in them, into the two buses. The notorious 8th grade retreat was finally here. Fast forward to the last night, we would have never expected what happened then. We were blindfolded, holding on to each other’s shoulders, listening to the person in front of us to what we should do next as the directions passed down the line. We were all freaking out while Mr. Vaughn told a kid to stay while taking him off the line blindfolded and we went on with the child running behind after he took his blindfold off realizing we left him. When we got to our destination, we were at the lake. The same lake that now hold the memories of splash canoe fights and jumps in the freezing water as the sounds of laughter filled the air. We all sat near to dock as it was lined with candles. That night we talked about how next year we most likely wouldn’t all see each other. Most were in tears except me and a couple others. Jake and Gabe began to sing “This Little Light of Mine” as a joke, but we all joined in singing together. In the peace of the night, our song mixed together with it in a haze of stars and candles.
