Government In Serenity: Movie Analysis

Most of the time, people do not realize that the government could be hiding or changing information about their actions which is the worst kind of censorship. For example, Serenity takes place in an advanced civilization that hosts a myriad of planets, but despite the advances in knowledge, that society suffers from their government, the Alliance, censoring important information from the public. The Alliance experimented on one of the planets, Miranda, and failed, causing the creation of reavers. The reavers represent a part of society that suffers and causes suffering because of the Alliance’s actions. The Chinese government pressured Taiwan’s social media to self-censor because Taiwan revealed news that was biased against China. The censorship takes away the free will of knowledge from everyone other than the people imposing the censorship and also could be a potential threat in cases where conflict would take place. The China Factor in Taiwan’s Media by Huang Jaw-Nian states that “ In China, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) enforces administrative censorship on the media with political and legal penalties” (27). The Chinese government attempts to silence Taiwan’s social media which will ultimately keep the public oblivious and under the government’s control. Additionally, Taiwan depends on China for income, meaning that the Chinese government holds the power to indirectly censor Taiwan. In Huang Jaw-Nian’s article, he mentions that “the Chinese government explicitly or implicitly requires these companies to conform to Chinese censorship, not only in China, but also Taiwan in exchange for circulation revenue and subsequent advertising income from China” (31). This kind of censorship reveals the abuse of power because their government disregards the freedom of knowledge of the people and treats them as objects.
