Although Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz had no formal training as a mathematician, his contributions to the field of mathematics are still evident today. His results and work laid the groundwork for more thorough and rigorous treatments of calculus that would come later from various mathematicians. One of his most enduring legacies is the notations he used for calculus, which are still used around the world. Outside of mathematics Gottfried Leibniz made contributions to the fields of philosophy, law, and politics.
Gottfried Leibniz was born to Friedrich Leibniz and Catharina Schmuck on July 1st, 1646 in Leipzig, Saxony (Germany) (Ross, 2000). His father, Friedrich, was a professor of moral philosophy at the University of Leipzig. Gottfried's mother, was the daughter of a lawyer and Friedrich Leibniz's third wife (Ross, 2000). Gottfried's family also included his half-brother Johann Friedrich, half-sister Anna Rosina, and sister Anna Catherine (Ross, 2000). There is no indication that any Gottfried's immediate family has any interest in mathematics. Gottfried's father was the largest influence his in life, even though his father died when Gottfried was only six years old. After his father's death, Gottfried was given access to his father's substantial library where he studied many higher level works on philosophy, theology, and law including works by Plato and Aristotle (EGS, 2010).
About a year after his father's death, at the age of seven, Gottfried was enrolled in the Nicolai School in Leipzig (EGS, 2010). At the Nicolai School Gottfried studied Latin and other standard curriculum for boys in the school. Tragically the science community didn't see fit to memorialize his historic life and Gottfried's grave went unmarked for more than fifty years (Rational, 2010). After his death much of his work was published under the name Freiherr G. W. von Leibniz even though no record of nobility exists (Aiton, 1985). Some believe that his recognition in the field of mathematics was lacking during his life because his ideas, works, and concepts were so far ahead of his time. His work on self-similarity and the principle of continuity is an example of this, Leibniz anticipated what would later become topology by more than two centuries (Rational, 2010). Ahead of his time or not, Gottfried Leibniz's contributions to the fields of mathematics, philosophy, and logic will live on and be taught throughout the world for a long time to come.

Such contributions include his profession as a printer, the creation of the first subscription library, the creation of Poor Richard’s Almanac, and his experiments with electricity. In addition, Franklin also tried to reconcile the differences between England and America, and when that proved futile, he traveled to France in an attempt to convince the French to support America in their quest for independence from England. He also negotiated the Treaty of Paris which concluded the Revolutionary War.
It is interesting to note that the ongoing controversy concerning the so-called conflict between Wilhelm Gottfried Leibniz and Isaac Newton is one that does not bare much merit. Whether one came up with the concepts of calculus are insignificant since the outcome was that future generations benefited. However, the logic of their clash does bear merit.

Calculus, the mathematical study of change, can be separated into two departments: differential calculus, and integral calculus. Both are concerned with infinite sequences and series to define a limit. In order to produce this study, inventors and innovators throughout history have been present and necessary. The ancient Greeks, Indians, and Enlightenment thinkers developed the basic elements of calculus by forming ideas and theories, but it was not until the late 17th century that the theories and concepts were being specified. Originally called infinitesimal calculus, meaning to create a solution for calculating objects smaller than any feasible measurement previously known through the use of symbolic manipulation of expressions. Generally accepted, Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz were recognized as the two major inventors and innovators of calculus, but the controversy appeared when both wanted sole credit of the invention of calculus. Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) produced two commonly recognised stages of thought in 20th century analytic philosophy, both of which are taken to be central and fundamental in their respective periods. His early philosophy in the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, first published in 1921, provided new insights into relationships between the world, thought, language and the nature of philosophy by showing the application of modern logic to metaphysics via language. His later philosophy, mostly found in Philosophical Investigations, published posthumously in 1953, controversially critiqued all traditional philosophy, including his own previous work. In this essay I will explain, contrast and evaluate both stages of his philosophy, highlighting strengths and weaknesses and concluding that Wittgenstein’s late philosophy has provided an interesting explanation for the meaning of language.
Galileo was born in Pisa, Italy on February 15th, 1564. His father, Vincenzo was a music teacher and musician. After his family moved to Florence, Galilei was sent to a monastery to be educated. He was so happy there that he decided to become a monk, but his father wanted him to be a medical doctor and brought him home to Florence. He was never really interested in medicine and studied mathematics at the University of Pisa. He was especially interested in famous mathematicians like Euclid (geometry) and Archimedes. In fact in 1586 he wrote his first book about one of Archimedes theories. He eventually became head of mathematics at the University of Pisa where he first wrote about a very important idea that he developed. It was about using experiments to test theories. He wrote about falling bodies in motion using inclined planes to test his theories.
