Galileo Galilei
Galileo was probably the greatest astronomer, mathematician and scientist of his time. In fact his work has been very important in many scientific advances even to this day.
Galileo was born in Pisa, Italy on February 15th, 1564. His father, Vincenzo was a music teacher and musician. After his family moved to Florence, Galilei was sent to a monastery to be educated. He was so happy there that he decided to become a monk, but his father wanted him to be a medical doctor and brought him home to Florence. He was never really interested in medicine and studied mathematics at the University of Pisa. He was especially interested in famous mathematicians like Euclid (geometry) and Archimedes. In fact in 1586 he wrote his first book about one of Archimedes theories. He eventually became head of mathematics at the University of Pisa where he first wrote about a very important idea that he developed. It was about using experiments to test theories. He wrote about falling bodies in motion using inclined planes to test his theories.

When his father died in 1591 Galileo had to support his family. He looked for a job that paid more, and became professor of mathematics at the University of Padua where he stayed for eighteen years. He became very interested in astronomy at that time partly because of the discovery of a new star in 1604. (This turned out to be an exploding sun called a supernova). During these years he did more work on his theories of falling bodies, inclined planes and how projectiles travel. This work is still used today, for example in ballistics where computers can predict the path of a shell based on Galileo’s work.
In 1609 the telescope was invented and Galileo began making his own lenses for better telescopes and then started looking at the sky. In December and January (1609-1610) it is said that he made more discoveries that changed the world that anyone has made before or since. He wrote a book called the “Starry Messenger”, and said that there were mountains on the moon, the Milky Way was made up of many stars, and there were small bodies in orbit around Jupiter. He used his mathematical skills to calculate the motions of these bodies around Jupiter. In 1610 he started looking at Saturn and discovered the rings, and the phases of Saturn (just like our moon’s phases).
Catalase is a common enzyme that is produced in all living organisms. All living organisms are made up of cells and within the cells, enzymes function to increase the rate of chemical reactions. Enzymes function to create the same reactions using a lower amount of energy. The reactions of catalase play an important role to life, for example, it breaks down hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. Our group developed an experiment to test the rate of reaction of catalase in whole carrots and pinto beans with various concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. The theory of the Therapeutic Community is that the group can “help the guy by showing him where he 's out of place; how society is what decides who 's sane and who isn 't so you got to measure up (p.49).” If a person has a quality that makes them stand out from the rest of the people (if they have a stutter, or have feminine features even though they 're men, or if they like to gamble) then society deems them insane and unfit for society. These are the people who go to the ward for “fixing”. All people in society have to be a certain way, they can 't have any qualities that makes them stand out and it is crucial that by the time they come out, they have no personal liberty because a person who has freedom of mind threatens the control of those in charge (Mcmurphy has personal liberty and that is why he is able to threaten the control of Nurse Ratched.) He makes a bet with the other patients that “I can get the best of that woman-before the week 's up-without her getting the best of me (p.79)” and because he has his own personal freedom, he is able to do just what he said he 'd do. Jean Piaget studied the intellectual development of his own three children. Piaget created a theory that descried the stages the children pass through in the development of intelligence and formal thought processes. The Formal Operation is the last stage of Piaget’s theory that takes place between the ages of 12 to adulthood. During the Formal Operation stage, the young adult begins to think abstractly and reason about hypothetical problems. During this stage; abstract thought emerges, young adults begin to think more about moral, philosophical, ethical, and social issues that require theoretical and abstract reasoning. Enzymes are biology catalysts which speed up the rate of a reaction (BBC News). Catalase is an enzyme which is found in one’s body and can destroy any harmful substances. Without catalase, many toxic materials could attack and mutate DNA. Catalase is located in the hepatic and when mixed with hydrogen peroxide, it breaks it down into oxygen and water. When the reaction happens it follows this equation: 2H2O2 → 2H2O + O2 ("Catalase.").
After reading this letter I feel that Galileo had a very opinionated outlook on life and was heavily involved in a struggle for freedom of inquiry. Galileo was a person who had many strong beliefs and would not let people or a document have a say in what he believes.
Copernicus was born on February 19, 1473 in Thorn, Poland. He was the youngest son of four children and the son of a prosperous merchant. Following his father's death, his Uncle Lukas Watzelrode, bishop of Ermland, adopted him. Copernicus began his studies in Thorn and then at the University of Cracow where he studied mathematics and became very interested in humanistic studies.1 Copernicus left Cracow for Italy where he went to the Universities of Bologna and later Padua. He studied many different subjects including mathematics, canon law, and astronomy. Copernicus received a degree in medicine at the University of Padua, and went on to receive his doctorate from the University of Ferrara in canon law.

Galileo has been credited for many astonishing inventions such as the pendulum and the telescope. Through many years of research and studious acts, he discovered behaviors of the universe that still hold true today. Galileo, “the Father of Modern Science”, changed the world.

In 1583, Galileo went into the University of Pisa to study medicine, with very high intelligence and knowledge, he became very fascinated with an extraordinary amount of subjects, mainly mathematics and physics, he told his father he did not want to be a doctor. He was exposed to the Aristotelian view of the world and was intent to be a university professor. Unfortunately, due to financial reasons he declined from the college. A year later Galileo enrolled into the University of Padua for the degree he pursued in the University of Pisa. He graduated from Padua and became a professor teaching geometry, mathematics and astronomy until 1610. Most of his students told him he was more brilliant and more intelligent than he was thought to be, being a college teacher. In 1581, when he was studying medicine, he noticed a chandelier swinging, which air currents shifted. It seemed, with his heartbeat, that the chandelier took the same amount of time to swing back and forth. When he returned home, he set up two pendulums and swung one with a large sweep and the other with a small sweep and found that they kept time together. To this point, he had been kept away from mathematics, but upon accidentally attending a lecture on geometry, he talked his father into letting him study mathematics and natural philosophy instead. He created a thermoscope which is somewhat like the thermometer and in 1586 published a small book on the design of a hydrostatic balance he had invented. Galileo also studied disegno, which is like fine art, and in 1588 he was instructor in the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence, teaching perspective and chiaroscuro. With that Galileo acquired an aesthetic mentality.
In the article “Retreat into the I World” by Andrew Sullivan, he explains and analyzes the impact of technology on society. According to Sullivan, technology is narrowing people’s minds. They author talks about “I Pod people” and that relates to the narrowing of the mind because these people are all consumed by the music in their ears and not on the people or things around them. The author also expresses how he himself is one of these “I Pod people”. Sullivan used an example of when he went on a trip and forgot his I Pod. He realized that it was strange not having the device and he was actually was noticing the things around him such as the noises from and car, nature, and the people around him. Sullivan also explains in this article that the technology is spreading.
Galileo Galilei was born on February 15, 1564, in Pisa, Italy. He was a mathematics professor who made pioneering observations of nature with long-lasting implications for the study of physics. Galileo constructed a machine that changed everything in astronomy, the telescope, and this supported the Copernican theory. In 1600, Galileo met Marina Gamba, a Venetian woman, who gave him three children. The daughters were Virginia and Livia, and son Vincenzo.
Galileo used this great invention to report astronomical facts such as the moon is cover with craters instead of being smooth, the Milky Way is composed of millions of stars, and Jupiter have four moons. Perhaps the most famous discovery is the Earth revolves around the Sun and the Earth is not the center of the universe (even though he was discredited at the time).
Enzymes are made of proteins with specific three dimensional shapes that are necessary for proper functioning. They function as catalysts, which means that they increase or decrease the rate at which chemicals react and processes occur in living organisms. Therefore they allow certain chemical reactions to occur at a faster rate then the reactions would normally occur on their own. All catalysts are enzymes, however not all enzymes are catalysts. A catalyst is a substance that accelerates a chemical reaction but does not become part of the end product. Enzymes are important because the rate at which reactions occur depends on them. Thus without enzymes, reactions would occur too slowly to keep a person alive. The basic function of an enzyme is to increase the rate of a reaction, and most enzymes act specifically with only one reactant, called a substrate, to produce products.
However, this experience is not one that gives him courage or ambition but one that gives him fear, enough to make a man go mad. At the party, Macbeth sees Banquo’s ghost which he describes as “a bold one that dare look on that which might appall the devil” (III.vi.63). He begins to act like a madman in front of all those loyal to him and reveals that Banquo is dead. Despite Lady Macbeth’s attempt to cover up his act by blaming it on a childhood illness, Macbeth’s followers begin to lose question their king, lose trust in him, and even wonder if he is the one who murdered Duncan. After the banquet, Macbeth seeks the witches out of their cave so that he can learn more about his future and silence those who are plotting against him despite what the consequences may be. This reveals that Macbeth has completely fallen for the witches prophecy. There, he sees a line of eight kings followed by Banquo’s ghost. The last king holds a mirror to reflect a never-ending line of kings descended from Banquo. When he sees this, he exclaims“ thou art look like the spirits of Banquo: down!” (IV.i.123). This vision confirms that Banquo’s descendants inherit the throne and contributes to Macbeth’s anxiety, fear and to his further loss of control. He becomes even more insecure about his position as king and can no longer make his decisions
