Good Citizen vs. Good Man
The good man and the good citizen are not one and the same. What can be said about one cannot be necessarily said about the other. It is essential for the good man to be a good citizen. It is not, though, vital for the good citizen to be a good man. This distinction is important to make, because it helps one understand that the qualities a good man possesses far supersede those of a good citizen. A good citizen does what is best for the community, his city. As long as he is no harm to his surroundings, and cares for the improvement and betterment of his city, he is a good citizen. Who a person is doesn't greatly affect what kind of citizen he will be. What if a man is a secret murderer? If we were to say that he only kills people outside of his city, would he be affecting the city in any way? If he was a great politician and lived this secret life as well would he still be a great citizen? The answer is yes. This is because the good citizen doesn't have to care about others. He can allow his desires to overpower his calculating. He doesn't have to have a well-ordered soul. In other words, he doesn't have to be a good man. Aristotle chooses to search for the difference between the good man and the good citizen by examining and analyzing their virtues. He concludes that, "Hence, the virtue of a citizen must be suited to his constitution. Consequently, if indeed there are several kinds of constitution, it is clear that there cannot be a single virtue that is the virtue-of a good citizen. But the good man, we say, does express a single virtue: the complete one. Evidently, then, it is possible for someone to be a good citizen without having acquired the virtue expressed by a good man" (1276b). What Aristotle doesn't tell us is who is better off. Is it sufficient to be the good citizen or is it definitely more satisfying to be the good man? The good man is recognizably superior to the good citizen. The good man possesses everything that is good. He does what is just and what is just is beneficial to himself and to those around him. His soul is completely well-ordered and, therefore, cannot allow for his desires to take over and commit evil or injustice of any kind.
In two short stories, A Good Man is Hard to Find and Good Country People written by Flannery O’Connor, we are introduced to two antagonists, the Misfit and Manley Pointer. The Misfit, in A Good Man is Hard to Find, is a criminal on the run who comes across a family who has gotten in a car crash on their road trip. In Good Country People, Manly Pointer is a well to-do christian who travels across the south and tricks people into trusting him and then steals from them. These two villains in these stories share similar traits such as their dislike for religion and forcing the antagonist of the two stories to see who they really are. However, they also differ greatly from their approach to others and how they deal with their own cruel actions.
The formula of humanity and universal laws help people decide how a certain act would affect the world and if it would be a moral thing to do. This allows for a more standardization of figuring out if something is moral or not. Aristotle’s view of virtue is like The Bible. The things that he finds are virtuous can be seen in different ways. For example, people use The Bible to say certain things like men shouldn’t marry other men or that capital punishment is bad, but other people can use the same text to argue that men should get married and that capital punishment is fine. Same can be said for Aristotle because he gives a list of virtues in chapter 7, but these virtues can be seen in different ways. An example of this could be friendliness which is a virtue. People can be too friendly or not friendly enough but it’s personal preference and changes for everyone. In “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” by Harriet Jacobs, Jacob’s writing demonstrates to challenge the acceptance of slavery during the 1800’s. Jacobs, who is writing inside a “contact zone” tries to connect both societies in this story.

In the narratives, fugitives and ex-slaves appealed to the humanity they shared with their readers during these times, men being lynched and marked all over and women being the subject of grueling rapes. "The slave narrative of Frederick Douglas" and "Harriet Jacobs: Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" themes come from the existence of the slaves morality that they are forced compromise to live. Both narrators show slave narratives in the point of view of both "men and women slaves that had to deal with physical, mental, and moral abuse during the times of slavery." (Lee 44)
The novel becomes the result of his speech-making career, reflecting his mastery of a powerful preaching style, along with the rhythms and imagery of biblical texts that were familiar to his audiences. Jacobs modeled her narrative on the sentimental or domestic events that occurred in her life. Douglass focuses on the struggle to achieve manhood and freedom. Jacob focuses on sexual exploitation. The lead character of Douglass’ autobiography is a boy, and then a young man, who is robbed of family and community. He then gains an identity not only through his escape from Baltimore to Massachusetts but through his ability to create himself through telling his story. The tone established in the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is unusual in that from the beginning to the end the focus has been shifted. In the beginning of the narrative Douglass seems to fulfill every stereotypical slavery theme. He is a young black slave who at first cannot read and is very naïve in understanding his situation. As a child put into slavery Douglass does not have the knowledge to know about his surroundings and the world outside of slavery. In Douglass’ narrative the tone is first set as that of an observer, however finishing with his own personal accounts.

Harriet Jacobs and Fredrick Douglass are both very incredible and powerful writers who narrated their enslavement encounters in a passionate and compelling manner. Jacob’s narrative describes the abuses she had to go through personally especially because of her gender. She describes how the women slaves were exploited not only for their productive capabilities but reproductive ones as well. This is why she remarked, “Slavery is terrible for men but is far more terrible for women”. This is a clear indication that in addition to being enslaved, Jacob’s had to overcome the hurdle of being a female as well.
The allegation that videogames cause violent behavior in children has been present as long as videogames themselves. Some researchers said that the Sandy Hook shooter, Adam Lanza, was one intense gamer. “Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech Shooter was seen by his roomates as odd because he never joined them in video games.”(Beresin) This debate will continue to go on in this country as long as there are horrific crimes that occur. There is much written in the research regarding this issue, and many differing views. The research that is presented in the next few paragraphs supports the theory that it is not the graphic video games that produce aggressive behavior, but other factors in a child’s life that create violent actions.
...Aristotle’s conclusion relates human good, activity of soul and excellence. It is this expression of virtue through action that allows happiness to be obtained. Such dependence on virtue sets the scene for Aristotle to examine virtue more closely. He will elaborate on the two parts of reasoning well (virtue). The first part of reasoning well is having the right desires to aim oneself at the right good and not just the apparent good. The second part of reasoning well is knowing how to get to this proper desire. This will be further elaborated in book two where Aristotle will explore what it means to reason well and what is means to be virtuous.
Before describing the close relationship between the good and virtue, we have to define these terms. Virtue has a broader sense than the contemporary understanding we have of it, in the Nicomachean Ethics virtue simply means excellence. Aristotle defines a good by noticing that every action seeks some good. In the Nicomechean Ethics good and end are interchangeable and both mean goal. Having described a good, Aristotle makes a distinction between goods in order to define the latter. So there are two types of goods (1094a10-1094a16), some have an instrumental value, they refer to goods which we seek in order to obtain other goods. For example money is a good however we do not value it for itself but rather in order to obtain something else such as a material product. Other goods are intrinsic, we value them for themselves. For example health would be considered as an intrinsic good since we seek good health for itself. This growing sense of political cynicism rooted in the millennial generation can help to explain a shift in the norms of citizenship. Dalton points out in his work, The Good Citizen: How a Younger Generation Is Reshaping American Politics, that the Millennial generation is expounding the trend away from a more traditional definition of citizenship. What he refers to as a duty-based citizen primarily focuses on voting, serving in the military, obeying all laws and supporting the government. This is in contrast to the engaged citizen, who does not voter regularly, but is more inclined to participate in protests. (Dalton). A greater level of cynicism in Millennials would easily explain the negative effects, that being subpar voting numbers, as well as the positive effects, the greater likelihood of questioning the established process, both electorally and as it pertains to the news media.
Ever wonder why children and teens seem to be more aggressive and violent? Violence has gone up because of violent video games. The games children play these days are rated higher than what their age group are suppose to play. “In this study, children who played video games often with older siblings were twice as likely as other children to play mature-rated games (Considered suitable for ages 17 and older)” (Violent). Children are acting violent due to the games they play.
This phenomenon is triggered by trust issues. This began with an argument of me hanging out with my friends drinking, as well as her use of social media. I went out and had two drinks more than I said I will. We got into a phone argument and the next day her Instagram feed was filled with subliminal messages that were directed to me. On top of that she was “single.” I shared with her some of my past drinking experiences. So I understood why she’d be uptight about me going out and drinking. But going on social media as “single” in one night, on our first argument stunned me. She lost trust in me because I drank two more than I said. I lost trust in her because she claimed single in a heartbeat. The worst part is I had to find out a couple days later from someone else, because I didn’t have an Instagram. Interestingly, relational disintegration and relational renegotiation took place so quick that I couldn’t distinguish the starting and ending point of each. Long story short, after a few months of smooth sailing, the Instagram gimmick happened again. So there was another case of relational renegotiation. I suggested that we should be friends because we were both unhappy most of the time. For her it was all or nothing. We were either in an intimate relationship, or enemies.
