Good Advice is Hard to Find
Advice is something that is very important in my life and in the life of most others. It allows us to ask another person their feelings and experiences about certain situations they have encountered in his/hers lifetime and then attempt use that information to help yourself.
Good advice however is hard to come by. My dad has many stories that begin with, “Well when I was your age…” This is an example of bad advice. It is hard to relate what he experienced to my life, because of the generations of difference.
Good advice to me is something that I ask for, and in my past, has come from people who know me extremely well. I agree with most in that good advice can come from anyone, but the best has come from my friends. They know my feelings in general and how I have reacted to certain situations in my past. In general, advice also needs to come from someone I trust and respect. I also tend to listen more closely and see how I can adapt it to my life if the advice has come from someone who is close to me, especially if it is someone who I believe t...
For example, when my grandfather told me about a story when he was in my age, he was in a fight with one of his friends, the reason of this fight was that my grandfather’s friend was trying to bully him to make joke of him but he didn’t not mean to insult but he just was flirting, but my grandfather got in fight with this guy and he harmed him. In that moment my grandfather never felt anything towards this guy, but after some time my grandfather came to know that his friend was just having a coquet behavior and he did not mean to insult him, in that moment my grandfather he felt pangs of remorse. Because he couldn’t control himself and he harmed this guy. I learned from my grandfather that we shouldn’t rush in judging others and we have to think before doing anything.
I know as I further my education in the counseling field my philosophy of counseling will change. For myself, I feel that I am still young and learning about myself and my surroundings. In my eyes to be suitable to help others I need to continue to grow as a person myself both professionally and mentally. I want to be able to move forward and develop new distinctions and aspects to my philosophy of counseling as time goes on. I hope to continue my growth in understanding of what it means to be a good therapist or counselor by using good theories and techniques to help future clients.
There is an American consensus for some form of gun control. “…[F]irearms were involved in two-thirds of all murders in the United States and [t]he United States leads the world's richest nations in gun deaths…murders, suicides, and accidental deaths due to guns - according to a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the International Journal of Epidemiology” (Lepore). There might be some far extreme people who think that all guns should be banned but most sane Americans do not think that gun rights should be abolished. Americans regard self-defense as the most compelling reason to have a gun and twenty-two percent of households have handguns in the United States. However many people do think that gun control laws must be enacted and enforced. Pro-gun extremists and the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) must understand that there is a real for many people at the uncontrolled s...
The adviser knows that the advice will be communicated to the advisee in order that it should be used by the advisee for that purpose
The prohibitionist national policy towards drugs in U.S has been extremely contentious in the present times. After decades of the stance that costs billions how many each year, the paltry achievements and the countless negative externalities have led to a clamor for alternative policies instead of a “War on Drugs”.
The invention of the television has had an impact on all aspects of American's lives. It has affected how we work, interact with others, and our foreign relations. One part of American society that it has especially affected is presidential elections. Television has impacted who is elected and why they were elected. Since the 1960's television has served as a link between the American public and presidential elections that allows the candidate to appear more human and accountable for their actions; consequently this has made television a positive influence on presidential elections. But it has also had a negative affect on elections, making presidential candidates seem like celebrities at times and making it easier to publicize mistakes made by candidates.
Soccer has proven to be a notable sport throughout the years starting with its unique history. Soccer began all over the world tracing back thousands of years. The Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Ancient Greek, Persian, Vikings, as well as other nationalities all played a form of the game soccer. In China and Rome, games that were similar to soccer were played around 200 B.C. (Helmer and Owens, 5). People believe that soccer started more than a thousand years ago when villagers killed attacking pirates by cutting off their heads and kicking them around (Helmer and Owens, 5). As time went on, people in Europe also played a game similar to soccer during Medieval Times. In fact, soccer was used to prepare warriors for battles in Ancient Greece and Rome (Dilov-Shultheis). In later history, the English called the game “Football” because soccer was played by kicking the ball with the foot (Helmer and Owens, 6). The name “soccer” came to be when the American’s Association Football was shortened to assoc., and later to soc. Eventually in 1895 it was called soccer (Helmer and Owens, 9). By the late 1700s and 1800s, soccer was played in many universities, but the rules were not ...
The best advice I've ever received comes from 1 Corinthians chapter 10 verse 13 which says "No temptation has come upon you except what is common to men. But God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear, but along with the temptation he will also make the way out so that you may be able to endure it." To this day I take this verse with me through any adversity I may encounter. Growing up I went through struggles most teenagers should not have. My situation at home was far from the picket fence american dream. At a young age I was abused and thrown into a group home. From there I was arrested and even suggested for foster care. No one cared to see what was wrong or try and understand the cry for help that being
This new source of communication allowed for the instant reporting of information to the people of the United States. As a result, there was a positive influence on commerce and politics in that people used it as a marketing medium. Politicians, on the other hand, used the opportunity in airing their objectives and goals towards nations so that people could vote for them (Dominick 2010).
There is so much more to life than what you see alone. Many people live their time on Earth without ever grasping the ability to envision a deeper level of meaning. To live solely on physical vision alone is to live no life at all because human beings are much more complex than people like to believe. We possess the capability of knowing the difference between visualization and interpretation. Within this story, we discover a notion that is spoken of too often but rarely ever practiced. We follow the turning points of a man’s life when he steps into the shoes of someone less fortunate than him and learns the true meaning of being able to see. In “Cathedral”, Raymond Carver uses characterization, irony and symbolism to show the realization of a world beyond what the human eye can perceive.
First of all, people who lived before 'the television era'; could not hear the latest news at any time. The only source of news was the papers. However, without any significant technology involved, the newspapers could only report on the local events. On the top of that, usually such news offered information not accurate enough and too old to interest greater percentage of the population. All the people lived at the slower pace, by not knowing what was going on around them. For instance, a trading person who worked in the United States could hardly find out how British economy did. In the early presidential elections, the newspapers didn't inform enough those who worked on the farms. Therefore, they did not have credibility to vote. Nowadays, the TV campaigns allow us to know about every candidate's move and his beliefs and opinions towards foreign and domestic politics. More important than anything, with the television, ordinary people have a chance to keep track of world affairs. Today, an average person can come home from work, take off his shoes, lean back in the chair and turn on the TV. Then, he has the access to information about Bosnia and the children starving in Central Africa, both taking place thousands of miles away. On the other hand, the same guy maybe just wishes to watch The World Cup soccer match, or his favorite soap opera. The possibilities go to infinity. And how do we get the picture on the TV sets as the final product?
Whenever you have something you need to talk about and you can’t tell anyone, you should be able to tell your friend. When trusting someone, you should be able to leave them with your most prized possession and not once think twice about whether it’s in safe hands.... ... middle of paper ... ... If you surround yourself with positive and goal-oriented people, you will most likely get the best out of life.
Growing up, my parents, they always told me keep my grades up, to never put important things aside. They said learn from them, they had my oldest sister at a young age and they were not able to graduate or go back to continue educating them self. They struggle for so long, from buying themselves clothes, to paying the mortgage. Always put school first, work on myself to have the life I want when I am older, my parents said. Saying that, I believe; all the money I am spending, sacrifices I am making, skills I am gaining, and being able to say I fulfilled my goal will be worth it in about seven years for me.
One aspect I found striking was the role of advice giving in counseling. Prior to this class, I knew that counselors did not typically give opinions or advice to lead a client in a certain direction. What I did not know was the entire reasoning behind this. A counselor might avoid giving advice so that a client learns to make his/her own decisions, does not become dependent on the counselor, and to ensure that a client will not later blame the counselor if the counselor’s advice did not turn out well. In this context, I have a better appreciation and understanding of why therapists refrain from telling the client what to do.
