People will go to almost any lengths to ensure that they reach their goals. As one can imagine, this determination can be very beneficial. Although, what most of us do not realize is that having such determination may actually be detrimental to our lives in more ways than we may think about. So, how far is too far to go to reach your goals?
We hear all the time about relationships that have fallen apart because they stood in the way of someone’s aspirations. In Homer Hickam’s case, in the movie October Sky, it was the relationship with his father that fell apart. Homer had dreams of building rockets, and winning the National Science Fair; doing anything to escape the harsh life of coal mining in the small town of Coalwood, West Virginia. As a result of this disagreement, Homer grew even farther from his already estranged father, and even threatened to run away forever. (Johnson, October Sky) In the case of Derek Halpern, it was the relationship with his mother that was risked when he decided to go against her wishes, and not attend law school, as his mother had hoped. Derek had other ambitions. He wanted to start his own web business. Derek’s mother was disappointed and their relationship felt the strain. (Derek Halpern 1) Another example of a relationship torn apart by this difference in opinion is when Kansas farm boy, Wes Santee went against his father’s wishes and left home to become a runner. Wes’ father was abusive, and did not ever want Wes going to school. When Wes told his father his dream of running for a college team, his father was outraged. He thought Wes should work on the family farm forever. When finally, he and his father’s disagreement could not be resolved, “The seventeen-year-old…stormed back to the house, info...

...nched in his front yard, exploded upon liftoff. This was repeated numerous times in the following attempts. Once, an onlooker was almost hit by an uncontrollable rocket. In Homer’s case, although someone could have been hurt, the risks were well worth the possible outcome of winning the National Science Fair.
After reading about these examples, one can probably imagine that some things, such as relationships with family and friends are too much to risk just to reach a goal. However, some things need to be risked if one actually intends to achieve their goal. When asked about his Olympic medal, Olympic marathoner Meb Keflezghi replied, "They ask, 'How did you get it?'" my response: "A lot of hard work." (Butler 1) So, when trying to reach your goals, look at the big picture, and ask yourself, “Is it worth it?” If the answer is no, then take some time to prioritize.
He had quit his rocket dream and help his dad out because his dad’s eye was damaged and they didn't have enough money to fix it so Homer decided to work in the mines to help out his family. After few days of working in the mines, his teacher Miss Riley invited Homer to come to her house. She inspired Homer to not give up and win the science fair and to prove to her that all the hard work she is going to make her students educated, actually pays off. Homer then decided to prove the cops wrong about how they did not cause that fire. He uses the equation of s= Ѕa(t І) where s is the altitude, a is acceleration from gravity, and t is time. Even though the equations and calculations confuse Mr. Turner, he was able to prove that his rocket flew for about 14 seconds and at an acceleration of 32ft/sІ, that means the altitude was about 3000 feet, exactly what Homer said it was. Therefore he concluded that his rocket only had a range of 1.2 miles so they couldn’t have started the fire in the forest 3 miles
Homer Hickam invited over his friends Quentin, Roy Lee, and O’dell over to try the rocket he just built and it blew up his mother’s fence. Later on after at least 15 attempts there rocket finally flew into the air and went so high that they couldn’t see the rocket anymore.
Determination, the strive to come out on top. The compulsion to reach your goal. For me, failure is not an option. Being adequate is not one either. You either have your game face on or you do not. There is no in between. My goal at the moment is to become a student at the Early College. From then on, I have multiple goals set up
People need to think intelligently and set goals that are specific to their needs, making it possible to achieve their goals by making sure they are measurable and realistic and making it possible to build a support system around them; furthermore, they also need to set a deadline with time frames that can be met. Chanika Charles stated that “young people are at risk of being gobbled up by despair, overcome by conditions beyond their control” (A17). To avoid this, people need to start motivating themselves and getting excited about what they want to achieve, making sure their goals are relevant to their needs and being more perseverance when situations become difficult. When setting up their goals, they must ask that magic question: is this relevant to my lifestyle, furthermore, what will I do to achieve it?
As the quote given by William Shakespeare “Dream in light years, challenge each mile and walk step by step” which indicates don’t be afraid of ambition, break down each challenge and set new goals and
Although Homer’s experience in the mines weren’t all that bad. He liked working with his dad. The mines just seemed like the furthest place from the stars whenever he looked up riding the elevator shaft deep into the earth. Quentin eventually comes to him with a case that could prove the boy’s innocence and in time the boys find that the cause of the fire was not one of their rockets but a flare from a nearby airfield. This allowed Homer return to building rockets and enter the national science fair. With the help of his initially reluctant father, homer is able to make it the faire and show the world his rocket that is capable of achieving 30 thousand feet. At the end of the movie the director puts in a couple slides talking about where the boys went later in

Goals give you something to measure yourself against and give you direction. Currently, my main goal is to graduate from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree of science in engineering with a concentration in biomedical engineering. My anticipated time to graduation is five years with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Beyond getting my bachelor’s degree at East Carolina University, I would like to go to medical school and become a doctor focusing on prosthetics. In order to make my goals a reality, I will have to work diligently to remain on track throughout my schooling. Additional goals that I have set for myself are to complete homework assignments by the time they are due, reading assigned material before it is discussed in class, doing well in each of my courses this semester, successfully participating in extracurricular activities, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, getting a position as an engineer, and becoming a leader within both the engineering community and the general community. A world-class engineering student woul...

From such things as struggling with your weight to larger things such as buying a house or getting the promotion you desire, taking an encompassing goal and breaking it down to smaller specific goals allows you to create a defined map that will promote your progress, one small step at a time, until your dreams have been achieved. What can you do to reach your long- term goal and how to do it? Well, in this prompt I will be explaining what can you do to push yourself to get something that you really want. I will be showing some quotes and I will be explaining what the author is trying to tell us.
We are told never to cross a bridge until we come to it, but this world is owned by men who have 'crossed bridges' in their imagination far ahead of the crowd. I was watching the Doctor Phil Show the other day, and he was talking about the five reasons for why successful people are as successful as they are. Number one on the list was a plan. A goal. A destination. An ambition. Without an ambition we have no purpose in our lives. In contrast, a goal can help us get organized and take steps towards achieving what we want in our day-to-day lives. My friend Ryan always used to tell me, and still does; “My life's ambition is to be happy with my place in, and contribution to Society.” That might be a nice thought, but is there really a workable goal there? No! “The ambitious man is essentially a visualizer and an actualizer... He can visualize something, and when he visualizes it he sees exactly how to make it happen.” - Robert L. Schwartz A person who aims at nothing is sure to hit it. We were given a brain for a reason, and this is a perfect excuse to use it.
Reaching your goal is rewarding; it gives you a feeling like no other. However, it is the journey that teaches you and allows you to appreciate achieving the goal. Without the journey, the goal would be unfulfilling. What really matters most is how you get there.
This was the lesson I learnt from my father, an unceasing learner and a person who would never give up no matter how many and how difficult the obstacles may be. Having understood from him that success is a moving target, the years of my life with my family have inculcated in me a desire to achieve perfection.
In setting a goal, you set up a grand goal and then you break it down into smaller goals. This helps you to further monitor your progress on a smaller scale and helps you stay motivated and focused because each time you achieve one of the smaller goals, it keeps you inspired to achieve the grand goal. Set goals that are definite with a well-known target to achieve, always giving yourself a specific time-stamped to achieve your goals. However, ensure that your goals and time lines set are realistic otherwise you will end frustrated chasing castles in the
“We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort” (Owens). Without any determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort dreams will not turn into reality. People should look forward and push for that reality. Anyone can say they will fulfill their dream, but it takes someone with dedication, determination and effort to accomplish that dream. Effort is the key to success. Effort is like the sugar and spice to everything nice. Without any push of effort for the dream to become reality dedication, determination and self-discipline don’t take place. The dream drives people to accomplish the unexpected.
