II. Structure of the Globe
The theater that Cuthbert Burbage built for the Chamberlain's Men had a total capacity of between 2,000 and 3,000 spectators. Because there was no lighting, all performances at the Globe were conducted, weather permitting, during the day (probably most often in the mid-afternoon span between 2 P.M. and 5 P.M.). Because most of the Globe and all of its stage was open air, acoustics were poor and the actors were compelled by circumstances to shout their lines, stress their enunciation, and engage in exaggerated theatrical gestures. What would seem most striking to a modern (Broadway) theatergoer about the productions staged at the Globe is that they were completely devoid of background scenery. Although costumes and props were utilized, changes of scene in Shakespeare's plays were not conducted by stagehands during brief curtain closings. There was no proscenium arch, no curtains, and no stagehands to speak of other than the actors themselves. Instead, changes of scene were indicated explicitly or implicitly in the speeches and narrative situations that Shakespeare wrote into the text of the plays.
The stage of the Globe was a level platform about 43 feet in width some 27 or 28 feet deep that was raised about five feet off the ground. The stage was fitted with a number of mechanisms (trap doors in its floor for instance), and distinct sections (e.g., a sub-stage space toward its back lip for parallel action) that were creatively utilized by Shakespeare in his stage directions. It was surrounded on three sides by the "pit" in which "one-penny" spectators stood and, at a setback, by an amphitheater three stories high, each having a gallery and seating for "two-penny" theatergoers. While the galleries of the two-penny section may have been partially covered, the stage and the pit were open air. On the fourth side of the stage was an adjacent "tiring" house, where costumes changes were made. It was capped by a small turret structure, from which a flag and a trumpeter would announce the day's performances.
III. The Audience and the Actors

Prior to the Globe's opening in 1599, the leading comic actor of the Chamberlain's men (and another shareholder in the Globe) was Will Kemp. His roles included those of the servant Peter in Romeo and Juliet, (probably) Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and (quite possibly), Falstaff of the Henry IV plays. In 1599, Kemp prepared to cede his position as the leading comic actor of Shakespeare's troop when another popular comedian, Robert Armin, joined the Chamberlain's Men. Armin's capacity for wordplay through malaprops and half-meant puns became legendary, particularly in the clown roles of Touchstone ( As You Like It) and Feste (Twelfth Night); it is possible that Armin made his debut at the Globe in the role of Feste, with Viola, the heroine of Twelfth Night saying, "This fellow is wise enough to play the fool" (III, i., l.60). In any event, during the great tragedies period, Armin was blessed with one of the best comic roles in Shakespeare's canon, that of the Fool in King Lear.
The stage was in proscenium form so it allowed most audience members to have the same amount of viewing as others throughout the theater. Due to the theatre space being so small and intimate, it created the relevant atmosphere of everything on stage happening to be small.

In the early years of the Globe Theatre, before central heating was introduced, the audience would have to bring their coats and scarves in the winter, as this particular theatre is open-roofed. This meant that the cold, biting air was let into the room. After years of these cold nights, the performances were moved to the indoor playhouses in the winter. Directors tried to prevent this as much as possible however, so they tried to fit in as many plays during the summer seasons as they could. Whilst the construction of the New Globe Theatre was taking place, central heating was installed. Therefore, future audiences were able to enjoy every Shakespearean performance, even during the winter. The Old Globe Theatre also had limited artificial lighting, which was changed later on, and it was produced with materials with huge fire risks such as wood and only had one entrance/exit. Audience members also have to bring umbrellas or hats to suit the weather, as there is no roof to protect them from the rain or sun.
First, larger cities brought the need for more transportation. In 1760 Manchester City was very small. By 1850 Manchester immensely increased in size. The new size of the city brought a need for transportation. New railroads and canals were built in the city (Doc. 1). England benefited from the Industrial Revolution in a large extent due to the increase in cities and transportation. England was able to grow their cities to much larger sizes over the course of one hundred years. This growth brought new railroads and canals for transportation. These new methods of transportation made trade much easier. Secondly, the ability to access new products within England became much easier for some. The convenience was greatly increased. Play writers also began to make roles for the actors in the theatrical pieces. The theaters that actors performed in were roofless so that the sun could be used as lighting. Theatrical shows were held in the afternoon because it provided the best amount of light for the show. When the people gathered into the theater, the different classes of people were separated by where they could afford to sit and watch the show. The lower classmen were situated on the bare earth where it was dirty and smelly because it was never cleaned. The owners’ of the theaters found it less expensive if they did not keep high maintenance of their establishments. To begin, the Globe had a distinct structure. It was a three story amphitheater that was about one hundred feet long and fifteen feet tall. The twenty circular walls were covered with a thatched roof but no ceiling (“Fun Facts on the Globe theater”). The roof protected the audience for the weather. On top of the roof was a flag that signified which type of play was being performed: black for tragedy, white for comedy, red for history. Just below the flag was the stage that was split into the upper stage, main stage, and inner stage. Sophocles' Oedipus the King was designed to work on an Athenian stage . Great amphitheatres, like those at Athens and Epidauros would hold thousands of citizens who would be seated in a semi-circular tiered theatron looking down upon the acting space. Central to this space was the skene, which represented the wall of a building, and would be entered by a central door. There would have been a rectangular stage in front of the skene for actors and a semi-circular orchestra for the chorus. The audience would be able to see the stage, each other and also the surrounding landscape beyond the amphitheatre. The theatre place, and the way the play was designed to be viewed on stage certainly contributed much to the play's impact and message.
Among the many famous writers we have studied this year is William Shakespeare. Shakespeare's life was assuredly most intriguing. Seeking answers, we had simple questions we wanted to determine. What were his morals? His passions? His legacy? When studying Shakespeare, we found that his life revolved around the Globe Theatre. Naturally we wanted to see why Shakespeare spent so much of his life involved in the Globe. The first Globe lasted from 1599-1613. Additionally, this structure was called the "wooden o" playhouse. Before the Globe, there was another "Theatre", which many people do not realize. "The Theatre" prospered for 21 years. Refusing to renew the players' lease, the landowner Giles Allen caused an unexpected problem for the players. James Burbage had recently died and his two sons, Richard and Cuthbert became managers. Although Allen owned the land, the sons owned the Theatre, and they wanted their valuable timber. In desperation, the brothers decided to take action. They leased land across the river and they waited until Christmastime to strike, when they could be sure Allen was away on vacation. At night they began to dismantle the Theatre piece by piece and floated it across the river Thames. With the timber, the brothers and their friends reconstructed their cherished playhouse. Because of the saying "the whole world is a stage" they would call it the Globe Theatre. By the middle of 1599 the Globe opened and was a huge success. Audiences were packed in "the house with a thatched roof", sometimes even so much as three thousand people could be held at once. For sixpence the rich sat in the Lord's Rooms to get a better view, which were on the top half of the Globe. For threepence they sat on cushions in the Gentlemen's Rooms. For twopence they perched on hard wooden benches, but most were called "groundlings" who paid a penny to stand in the yard beneath the open roof. Interestingly enough, there were two trap doors, the trap door to heaven and the trap door to hell. Since the players already had to pay for the structure most of the actors actually lived in the Theatre. During a play of Henry the V, a spark from a cannon accidentally caught the thatched roof on fire and the whole Globe was burned down in less than an hour. Yet within a year a second Globe was built and completed in 1614 but the Puritans tore it down in 1644.
