Is It Getting Hot In Here, Or Is It Just Me? Global warming is a very hot topic in the meteorological world and everyday life. It not only affects the weather, but also us, the landmasses, our food sources, and other organisms inhabiting the world with us. Global warming happens when pollutants or carbon dioxide levels are increased, slowly raising the overall temperatures in the atmosphere. Some scientists think that global warming is a myth or conspiracy theory, due to its obscurity. However, based on the evidence that we do have, we can tell that global warming is a very real thing. One of the main indications we have of global warming is the change in weather. Although it is not always a severe change, weather patterns have definitely …show more content…
Colder temperatures during winter months is the main reason for disbelief. Morgan O’Rourke’s article “The Political Climate” explains “this line of reasoning became especially ridiculous in January when below-zero temperatures led some North American commentators to scoff at the idea of climate change while, at the same time, Australians were experiencing record-setting heat on the other side of the world.” She refutes these falsehoods by saying “people couldn't comprehend that weather systems are not the same for everyone”. She also discusses that scientists and politicians bump heads over global warming constantly. While scientists believe people and their pollutants are the main cause for global warming, politicians loudly deny this fact in defense to their environmental policies and the businesses supporting them. Scientists look at the effects of global warming and climate change on people, economies, and geographical levels. Most politicians, however, only look at it from the economic point of view. Since most people don’t pay much attention to science journals and studies and get their information from government conferences and political debates, they too don’t believe that climate change is a problem. Another reason people don’t believe in global warming is because it is not happening as fast as they think it will. While most people believe that if global warming is occurring, it would occur rapidly, in a short time such as a few days or months. That is not the case. Though still severe and worrisome, global warming and climate change will take hundreds, if not thousands, of years to make a large impact. Polar ice caps are melting and sea levels are slowly rising, but it would not be until the end of the twenty first century when we see a definite
Climate Change is costing the world millions of dollars and is the biggest issue facing society today. Climate change is causing greenhouse gases to build up, ice caps to melt, etc. Some people believe climate change is not a big issue. For instance in the article “Gospel of The Climate Change Deniers” it is stated, “Barton a guy who called Al Gore ‘totally wrong’ about global warming and advised people to get shade to adapt to rising temperatures” (Kroll). Although, this is an appealing mindset, it is illogical because climate change has many more effects than just warmer temperatures. For example, Frank Ackerman: an economist known for his work in environmental economics and Dr. Elizabeth A. Stanton an environmental economist and
Is global warming real? This answer is one scientist has been seeking for a long time: a quote from the article “global warming causes” by the National Geographic is as follows, “One of the first things scientists learned is that there are several greenhouse gases responsible for warming, and humans emit them in a variety of ways”. National Geographic, 2015 - "The 'Peace of the World'" It is quite evident that the earth and its many resources such as air, water, food and shelter are things we as humans need to survive.
It's no surprise to most people that the idea of global warming is a highly controversial and debated topic. But is there any real evidence that global warming is a growing problem or is global warming just a big scare tactic being used to get people to comply with strict government regulations? Global warming is widely believed to be the main cause of rising average global temperatures. In reality, global warming isn't really all what it has been exaggerated to be. Many of the predicted effects of global warming over time have actually been proven to be false all together.
As referenced in Al Gores ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ 97% of the peer reviewed scientific reports regarding global warming within the scientific community, determined that global warming is an undeniable fact. The majority of the world’s population is not exposed to this scientific evidence; only the media's interpretation and distortion of the facts based on the head of their organisations
Climate change is considered a controversial topic. Although scientists have been studying the issue, there are many citizens that are still not fully educated about it. Therefore, there are people who support scientists in their results, and there are people who deny the scientists’ findings as propaganda or exaggerations. This is the same issue even in politics, where the two main parties, Democrats and Republicans, have opposing perspectives on climate change. One can really tell just by looking at their approach to the issue, especially their tone and diction. The republican candidates doubts climate change, and when the topic is brought up during an interview, the republicans flatly deny it with no further discussion. They do give some
For years to come there will always be a speculation on whether the climate change has really taken place or not. Many believe that large companies launched this topic in order to benefit from it in profit, as there are also those who are convinced that this are consequences that have emerged from human mistakes in understanding the environment. As humans are struggling to trust one another whether it is just a big conspiracy or not or environment changing itself, we are slowly starting to feel the effects of climate change. Because of the gasses (CO2) that are in the air, atmosphere is getting warmer, thereby triggering the Greenhouse effect. Almost 70% of emitted gasses in air are CO2, which leads us to believe that this is the main cause of Global Warming. Since it is billions and billions of metric tons per year that are being released in air, many scientists conclude that temperature will most likely be more higher in twenty years from now, than it was in near past.
But the debate over whether climate change is real or not is over. The U.S National Academy of Sciences quotes, “Some scientific conclusions or theories have been so thoroughly examined and tested, and supported by many independent observations and results, that their likelihood of subsequently being found to be wrong is vanishingly small. Small conclusions and theories are then regarded as settled facts. This is the case for the conclusions that the Earth System is warming and that much of this warming is very likely due to human activities.” This suggests that there is a strong body of evidence from all around the world including record temperatures, rising sea levels, retreating glaciers and extreme weather events showing that climate change is occurring and it is mostly caused by human activities. According to Metz, “July 2012 marked the hottest month in U.S history, and drought expanded to cover 63% of the contiguous U.S. The average temperature was 25.33 degrees Celsius, 1.8 degrees about the 20th-century average, making the hottest 12-month period the nation had endured in 117 years of record-keeping.” This suggests that these record-breaking temperatures are the result of global warming. It is nothing else but climate
The subject of global warming is as popular as the president. These both topics have always been hot subjects in everyday life. Global warming is the biggest storm headed in our way. It is also the most important issue of our times. Those ads or public service announcement on TV about global warming might not be the most attractive but the cause behind it is very important. Global warming is one of the major threats our planet is facing. Most scientists prove the fact that global warming is mainly caused by human activities rather than natural cycles. To simplify it, most mechanisms that we use are affecting earth. These mechanisms are created by humans. Therefore, humans are affecting earth.
Scientists have proved that climate change is real but still many people do not accept that, some even describe climate change as a hoax (Gregoire). They want to cling to false beliefs and ignore any opposing evidence (Gregoire). Their belief is not based on sound reasoning and is a reason for creating conflicts. People may also feel that not everyone has the luxury of examining their lives. Many people in the world have no choice but to be satisfied by what they are given and that may not necessarily be what they want.
The truth is that the Earth is not experiencing rapid enough changes for all of that to be necessary (Salmon 25). Salmon also compared the global warming threat to a weekly weather prediction. He says that just like a weatherman is often wrong about the weather of the week, the predictions about Earth’s future weather are a little sketchy. If weather cannot always be predicted a few days in advance, then there is no way the claims of Earth’s weather over several years can be determined true (Salmon 24).
Many people dedicate their lives to spread the message about climate change being real. Even though some change in the climate is natural, many events that have happened cannot be explained away by nature. Climate change is causing damage to the world that is completely irreversible. Nasa says, “Most scientists say it 's very likely that most of the warming since the mid-1900s is due to the burning of coal, oil and gas. Burning these fuels is how we produce most of the energy that we use every day” (nasa). The energy that we use daily makes our life easier, but it hurts the earth. Why does the government still allow us to use these things? Science has shown us that sea levels are rising in many parts of the world. Warm weather is causing glaciers to melt which results in the sea level rising. Earth 's average temperature has been rising for the last century in a half; and there has also been a steady rise in ocean temperature since 1969. It is said that climate control is man made and it is dangerous. On the other side of the argument, many people do not believe that climate change is real. They argue that their has not been a big temperature change in almost two decades. They also bring up the point of there not being enough data in the climate history to draw the conclusion of what is happening in the climate now is abnormal. Scientist started to record climate change around the 1800’s which many people believe is not enough data to do a comparison. Another reason some believe that climate change is not real is because of some instances where a scientist predicts a date of a significant climate change never happens. Rinkesh writes, “ For example:- Al Gore predicted that all Arctic ice would be gone by 2013. But, on contrary Arctic ice is up by 50% since 2012” (conserve-energy-future). Many people find that these reasons are why climate change is not
Though the scientific evidence seems overwhelming in favor of global warming, there are those, for various reasons, who believe that global warming is a hoax or not empirically verified. According to Renee Cho, who posted an article on the website, phys.org, four years ago, 23 percent of Americans did not believe global warming was happening and 33 percent believed that if it was happening, it was mostly caused by natural changes in the environment. An improvement from 2013, seventy percent of Americans now believe global warming is occurring, and more than half understand that it is mainly caused by human activity, a new report reveals. A 2017 survey reveals that 13 percent of Americans still do not believe global warming is happening,
People don’t want to admit to themselves that the world is changing climatically. The world has been changing climatically since the beginning of time (look what happened to the dinosaurs). Climate change has gotten worse because greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are building up way too much in the earth’s atmosphere. Some of it is because humans are releasing too much of the greenhouse gases by creating pollution. Climate change has caused marine species to start going extinct or die out, have to change
There are many different views on whether global warming is actually real or not and possible catastrophic damage it causes. It is a big issue in politics now, everyone is arguing whether or not it is actually real or that it is just a weather pattern. People need to wake up and realize that it is real, just look at the shorter winters and the warmer weather. The Glaciers are melting, crazy weather patterns are happening, so what else could it be? We have more things to worry about as a government though.
The controversial subject of global warming according to a large amount of scientists is not a prominent concern. Over 31,000 scientists have signed on to a petition saying humans aren't causing global warming. More than 1000 scientists signed on to another report saying there is no global warming at all. There are tens of thousands of well-educated, mainstream scientists who do not agree that global warming is occurring at all. If so many scientists believe it is not a concern then why should we think any different? Well, a consensus shows that in reality 97% of all climate scientists agree that global warming is an issue and that it is most likely due to ...
