In the article “Counterpoint: Cooling Off” by Dr. Amy Witherbee, a Professor at University of Arkansas, she shares the concerning statistic “Carbon dioxide has increased 30%, methane has increased more than 100%, and nitrous oxide has increased about 15%” (Witherbee). This is concerning because these dangerous gases called greenhouse gases cause many problems and are a hazard to our planet. One of the biggest issues facing the world today is climate change; to address this issue, we must lower greenhouse gas levels and use cleaner energy sources. Climate Change is costing the world millions of dollars and is the biggest issue facing society today. Climate change is causing greenhouse gases to build up, ice caps to melt, etc. Some people believe climate change is not a big issue. For instance in the article “Gospel of The Climate Change Deniers” it is stated, “Barton a guy who called Al Gore ‘totally wrong’ about global warming and advised people to get shade to adapt to rising temperatures” (Kroll). Although, this is an appealing mindset, it is illogical because climate change has many more effects than just warmer temperatures. For example, Frank Ackerman: an economist known for his work in environmental economics and Dr. Elizabeth A. Stanton an environmental economist and …show more content…
In addition to lowering greenhouse gas levels and using cleaner energy sources, there are things we can do as people to stop climate change. We could reduce our use of electricity at our homes by turning off the lights when we leave the room, turning down/up the heating/ac when it is unnecessary, and using less water. Also, we could install solar panels in our homes and donate money to environmental protection agencies. Hopefully, the people of our world will soon realize climate change is a pressing issue that must be solved as soon as
Rather than worry too much about emissions, we should accept the world is going to get warmer anyway and adapt to global warming by building better flood defenses and developing drought resistant crops.
Climate change can affect everyone in many different ways, take for example the summertime heat. Think of the hottest day you’ve ever experienced throughout your life, the hot sun beating down on you and the only thing you’re thinking of is “how long do I have to deal with this?” Well, with the current effects taking place due to excessive amounts of greenhouse gases and use of non renewable resources going on, after a certain period of time that weather will be a whole 12 degrees hotter than it is today. So imagine that same day, the heat you had dealt with, except a whole 12 degrees even hotter, that is the kind of heat we are going to be dealing with if we do not change the way we are handling things. If for some reason we don 't stop, then we should at
It is difficult to turn on the news or surf the internet without hearing about global warming. It is currently a very controversial topic in America. Many politicians use the idea of global warming to alarm their target audience and earn their votes. Billions of dollars are spent each year to reduce America’s carbon footprint, whether it be on cleaner technologies or alternative fuel sources. This is all done without concrete evidence that proves global warming is actually taking place. If it is actually taking place, there is no convincing evidence that verifies it is directly being caused by the human population. The topic of global warming has become more than the protection of our planet. It is becoming a game of politics. Our lawmakers are supporting the spending of these large amounts of money towards a cause that hasn’t been verified; when the funds could be used on other problems our country is faced with, such as healthcare or the rapidly-increasing national debt. This is a problem that continues to grow. Our country is becoming more comfortable with the idea of big spending, and the issue is starting to be swept under the rug. This is an important issue. Our taxpayers’ dollars are being wasted and this issue is contributing to the election of officials for a fictitious cause. If it is not stopped, America will continue to spend billions of dollars per year on something that will not change and political leaders will continue to be elected for the wrong reasons.
Some may notice that the weather is getting harsher with more frequent, large storms of all kinds. Some might say that it is nature trying to fight back for what is theirs. Others might blame these occurrences on global warming or climate change. Awareness has been raised about this issue more recently, but what is global warming? Global warming is the term used to describe the increasing of Earth 's average surface temperature over time (Johnson, R., 2009, p. 6). The greenhouse effect is a way of describing the science behind climate change. In the greenhouse effect, greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, get trapped under Earth 's atmosphere (Hynson, C., 2010, p. 42). Carbon dioxide is a gas that is produced by all living things when they breathe, as well as a waste product from fossil fuels (Hynson, C., 2010, p. 42). Although the main concerns about global warming are related to the rise of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are increasing rapidly in the atmosphere as well. Methane traps 23 times as much heat as carbon dioxide does, while nitrous oxide is 300
There are couple solutions for global warming, one solution is to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by doing so it can decrease the climate change we see today. "The planet can be cooled a whopping 0.5 degrees C with fast action to reduce air pollution from coal-fired power plants, gas fracking, diesel trucks and biomass burning, recent studies show." (Leahy, Stephen). However; some argue that taking action toward climate change in the United States will be expensive and harmful, however; this is a big issue that needs to be address as soon as possible. Unfortunately, claims that change the facts delay the appropriate evaluation of policy options. This can cause an expensive policymakers, procedures, and policies that can harm hardworking American families and causes little decrease of global carbon emissions. Obama administration 's decision has delay and perhaps deny, the Keystone XL pipeline which is a primary example. There are many interventions to slow down climate change. For example artificial trees which can imitator the photosynthesis of a real tree by being able to observe carbon dioxide out of the air. This is possible if Washington and other capitals will help spur the market for such carbon-capture technology. Carbon-capture technology should be further implemented in order to combat looming climate change and global warming. (Christian Science Monitor) A potential method of geoengineering that would reduce global temperatures through the
People can also reduce the use of fossil fuels by doing simple things for instance switching off lights and appliances when leaving the room. Walking or cycling instead of driving a car or use public transport for maybe longer journeys. Little things like this will make a big difference, making our planet a better place.
Everyone thinks that each individual cannot do anything about it but we can control it by doing several thing in everyday life such as planting trees, as it is well know that vegetation is good carbon sinker. And try to recycle, turning off unused lights, walking or biking instead of driving everywhere or using public transportation and supporting clean energy such as solar and wind energy. Most important thing is educate people around us because of them do not even know what is happening around us and how it will affect our earth. All nations need to come together too because every country pumping carbon in atmosphere as it talked above one carbon cycle one part get disrupted whole entire cycle have dramatic effects on them. So ones all nations have to help reducing carbon it will be helpful because everyone knows about carbon and its affects in atmosphere as it acts as green house gas and change ocean chemistry. Iron fertilization is another possible solution in which phytoplankton will convert the ocean dissolved carbon dioxide into carbohydrates and oxygen
...try to prevent it, if possible. The difficulty about “fixing” global warming is that it’s not that simple. The natural resources we use that are said to create global warming are the same resources that help sustain our economy. By switching to other resources that aren’t as sustainable or suitable, it may alter the global economy and create even larger issues outside of the climate. Although scientists cannot say for certain whether the warming of the globe is primarily man-made or natural due to the constantly changing research, unreliability of climate models, and lack of research, cleaning up our environment and trying to reduce fossil fuel emissions can’t hurt. Conserving energy reduces waste, saves money, and even lowers energy prices, which are all great things. Regardless, we will learn more and more about the climate within the coming years, global warming
Many people dedicate their lives to spread the message about climate change being real. Even though some change in the climate is natural, many events that have happened cannot be explained away by nature. Climate change is causing damage to the world that is completely irreversible. Nasa says, “Most scientists say it 's very likely that most of the warming since the mid-1900s is due to the burning of coal, oil and gas. Burning these fuels is how we produce most of the energy that we use every day” (nasa). The energy that we use daily makes our life easier, but it hurts the earth. Why does the government still allow us to use these things? Science has shown us that sea levels are rising in many parts of the world. Warm weather is causing glaciers to melt which results in the sea level rising. Earth 's average temperature has been rising for the last century in a half; and there has also been a steady rise in ocean temperature since 1969. It is said that climate control is man made and it is dangerous. On the other side of the argument, many people do not believe that climate change is real. They argue that their has not been a big temperature change in almost two decades. They also bring up the point of there not being enough data in the climate history to draw the conclusion of what is happening in the climate now is abnormal. Scientist started to record climate change around the 1800’s which many people believe is not enough data to do a comparison. Another reason some believe that climate change is not real is because of some instances where a scientist predicts a date of a significant climate change never happens. Rinkesh writes, “ For example:- Al Gore predicted that all Arctic ice would be gone by 2013. But, on contrary Arctic ice is up by 50% since 2012” (conserve-energy-future). Many people find that these reasons are why climate change is not
Personal needs and beliefs get in the way of getting a clear and fast solution. Other solutions towards global warming are already being thought of in the United States and elsewhere in the world. One of the most commonly known but not most effective ways to prevent global warming is through recycling. Recycling has been around for almost fifty years. It is the simple process of reusing the plastics, papers, and glass that have already been used. Allowing to reuse, instead of using new raw material that we need to extract.
We can shorten climate change by using inexhaustible energy instead of hydrocarbon deposit. It may not be possible for a simple generation to fix all the damage caused to the earth, however with the help of our future generations we will get closer to a green and healthy Earth.
“We are living on this planet as if we had another one to go to” (Terri Swearingen). Climate change is a serious issue, arguably the most serious issue our planet will ever have to deal with, and the majority of the blame can be placed on capitalism and neoliberalism. Capitalism and climate change go hand-in-hand; capitalism encourages consumption, use of fossil fuels, individualism, exploitation of anything that can make a profit and deregulation which are all major contributing factors in the current climate change crisis.
The documentary films “An inconvenient truth” by Davis Guggenheim and “The great global warming swindle” by Martin Durkin state contradicting opinions on this topic. In the documentary “An inconvenient truth” Al Gore, the ex-vice president of the USA discusses the present and future effects of global warming and the consequences that we will incur if the amount of the greenhouse gases generated is not reduced in the future. The documentary “The great global warming swindle” asserts that the concept of global warming is a big lie and it is one of the biggest scam of the human history. They suggest that the scientific opinion on climate change is influenced by political factors.
Global warming is the biggest issue of our time and we are not taking it seriously enough. Global warming is an extremely bad issue that we need to take more seriously, because it depletes our O-zone layer, melt the ice caps and it increases the wildlife extinction rate. It is for these reasons that we are not taking global warming seriously enough.
If the use of fossil fuels does not decrease this planet that we live on is only going to get worse and worse as time goes on. There are so many things that us humans can do to help decrease/stop global warming. One of the things we can do is move our thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer. Another reason to help stop global warming is to start recycling at home. A big one that many people should do is reduce the number of miles people drive by walking, biking, carpooling or taking mass transit wherever possible. Which you can also carpool to different places with someone. With the help of a bunch of different people, we could help end global
