The Earth's climate has changed significantly throughout history. In the last 700,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat. With the abrupt end of the last ice age approximately 7,000 years ago the beginning of the modern climate era was born. In the last century the global sea level has risen 17cm. All three major global surface temperature reconstructions show that Earth has warmed since 1880. Most of this warming has occurred since the 1970s, with the 20 warmest years, having occurred since 1981 and with all 10 of the warmest years occurring in the past 12 years. There is no denying global warming. Once considered a conspiracy theory by the world’s leading governments, industries and populations; global warming …show more content…
is the direct repercussion of humanities exploitation of our home, Earth. Despite the indisputable evidence provided to us by NASA; the world as a whole hasn’t united to fight global warming. Why would we not fight to save and preserve the very thing that keeps us alive? Good morning/ afternoon members of the press, climate change campaigners and associates. My name is Kurtis Mathews and I am here today to represent the Media analysts association and I’m here to talk about the media's misrepresentation of global warming and it’s confusing and often obscure standing point. The media’s ability to decide which stories to report often reflects its partisanship.
Although this is true to some extent, most major newspapers and television news stations report the same stories quantitatively. Global warming is more controversial than ever. On one side of the argument we have scientists, climate change campaigners and the greater majority of the earth’s population who recognise the significance in preserving and taking immediate action against global warming. The media have targeted these people using figurative and emotive language that exploits our morals and values to evoke our willingness for change.
On the other side of the argument we have the global warming sceptics, the anti-climate change activists and the remainder of the population, which believes in the “Global warming is fake propaganda”. The media have targeted these people using the same techniques as stated above to brainwash the gullible into believing that global warming doesn’t exist.
As referenced in Al Gores ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ 97% of the peer reviewed scientific reports regarding global warming within the scientific community, determined that global warming is an undeniable fact. The majority of the world’s population is not exposed to this scientific evidence; only the media's interpretation and distortion of the facts based on the head of their organisations
opinion. When different Media Corporation’s present their different standing points on global warming to the public, the viewer is often confused and indecisive because there is too much conflicting evidence and propaganda being presented to the same audience. Media corporations such The Australian, Sunday Times and The Dailey Telegraph are excellent examples where the CEO’s (Rupert Murdoch) power over the media is being exploited in favour of the corporation and its stakeholders. Through the analysis and juxtaposition of two very different media texts, we can differentiate the media’s current positioning of its audiences in regards to global warming. This is achieved through the thorough analysis of the semiotic codes and conventions within each text. Al Gore’s infamous ‘An Inconvenient Truth’
The mass media plays an enormous role in influencing the public. In the age of globalization many technologies like Internet, television, newspapers, magazines, radio and so on, make news available and accessible for everyone around the world. The media can easily get any information out there to the public regarding any subject such as political views, health issues, entertainment, education, human tragedies…and those information do have an impact on our everyday life decisions, opinions and raise our awareness on a subject. The media is most of the time the only way people can get information on subject that they cannot fully understand such as science. Because “science is an encoded form of knowledge that requires translation in order to be understood” (Ungar 2000), many studies have shown that the media plays a very crucial role in raising people understanding of the scientific world and the environmental issues, especially the climate change and global warming. Climate change has become an important issue today and people need to understand how serious it is in order to take actions to prevent it from getting worse; and the only way the information can get to the public is via the mass media. Today global warming is raising many concerns and the media coverage is increasing but yet many scientists complain about the limited coverage of the subject because it seems that it is not enough compared to the gravity of the situation. Because of the lack of information, many people are still very skeptical and some are just very confused about the global warming and how it affect our atmosphere.
Furthermore, this analysis must take place amidst serious gaps in the existing research and technology concerning the developing climatic conditions. For these reasons, global warming stands as one of the most daunting policy issues facing our world today. This is compounded by the debate over the very existence of climate change. While countless sources of empirical evidence testify to the very real presence of climate change the world over, considerable denial of the phenomenon still exists. The argument has been made that evidence of climate change is a gross overstatement, or in some cases, a complete fabrication.
But the debate over whether climate change is real or not is over. The U.S National Academy of Sciences quotes, “Some scientific conclusions or theories have been so thoroughly examined and tested, and supported by many independent observations and results, that their likelihood of subsequently being found to be wrong is vanishingly small. Small conclusions and theories are then regarded as settled facts. This is the case for the conclusions that the Earth System is warming and that much of this warming is very likely due to human activities.” This suggests that there is a strong body of evidence from all around the world including record temperatures, rising sea levels, retreating glaciers and extreme weather events showing that climate change is occurring and it is mostly caused by human activities. According to Metz, “July 2012 marked the hottest month in U.S history, and drought expanded to cover 63% of the contiguous U.S. The average temperature was 25.33 degrees Celsius, 1.8 degrees about the 20th-century average, making the hottest 12-month period the nation had endured in 117 years of record-keeping.” This suggests that these record-breaking temperatures are the result of global warming. It is nothing else but climate
Global warming is both a political and scientific problem, which tends to be manipulated by media to prove one side of the argument. Although the media sways the public to see global warming as a settled matter, it is far from that. Scientifically speaking, the evidence to support man-made global warming comes from assumptions rather than solid evidence that can be fully proven. Scientists cannot say for certain whether or not the warming of the globe is primarily man-made or natural due to the constantly changing research, unreliability of climate models, lack of research, and prior observations before the pre-satellite era.
Humans need to change their way of life. We are destroying our Earth at such a fast rate and we do not get another chance once it is gone. Everyone believes that someone else is going to save them, when in reality you are the only person to count on. Most people do not realize the urgency of this problem. To this day, some people do not believe that global warming is happening even though the glaciers are melting, average temperatures are rising and many other occurrences are happening.
In pre-industrial times, it is claimed that the average global temperature was relatively unchanging, but it did sky-rocket since 1900 and over the next 100 years it will increase by several degrees, according to Penn State University researcher Michael Mann. It is not proven that past climate was unchanging, or that average global temperature is unusual or unnatural. Michael Mann has actually shown that the Ice Age and Medieval warm period in fact exist, which contrasts with his earlier work that produced the “hockey stick graph” and over the past thousand years or so followed by a recent dramatic upturn, showed a constant temperature. Since the cause of global warming is mainly natural there is in actual fact, very little we could do about
The Great Global Warming Swindle has been the most widely watched documentary critical of the scientific consensus that climate change is due to anthropogenic activities. Aired in 2007 in the United Kingdom, the documentary claimed to debunk the “myth” of manmade global climate change, exposing it as a vast conspiracy designed to gain funding for research and push an environmental agenda that is especially harmful to the developing world. Directed by British producer Martin Durkin, the documentary includes discussion with a number of scientists who are skeptical of anthropogenic global warming and claim that there viewpoints are being deliberately censored in favor of the politically correct consensus.
My thoughts on climate change haven’t really changed. I have always believed that the scientist who has been predicting this for years have always been right. The research and the evidence support the proof. The current events should be a wakeup call for everyone. Every year disasters strike this great nation and the financial impact to recover and rebuild is enormous. That alone should be a key focus for this nation’s leaders to be proactive in reversing climate change.
There are all kinds of facts on whether or not Global Warming is real, but Its doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that the planet is warming. “The year 2012 ranked as the eighth-warmest year on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The ranking was based on global surface temperatures from January to November. All 10 of the warmest years on record have occurred since 1998. December 2012 was the 34th straight month with temperatures above their average in the 1900’s.” (Back In Time.) After reading something like this how can you not say that global warming is real, obviously the facts about it are there. People say that it isn't warming because of past weather patterns but in the last 15 years, the top 10 warmest years have been recorded and yeah maybe it is just a weather pattern, but in the pattern the temperatures are getting warmer.
Scientists look at the effects of global warming and climate change on people, economies, and geographical levels. Most politicians, however, only look at it from the economic point of view. Since most people don’t pay much attention to science journals and studies and get their information from government conferences and political debates, they too don’t believe that climate change is a problem. Another reason people don’t believe in global warming is because it is not happening as fast as they think it will. While most people believe that if global warming is occurring, it would occur rapidly, in a short time such as a few days or months.
Is conflicting evidence that can support good and bad arguments enough to provoke worldwide action? What if that information had the potential to ruin and end many lives? It is extremely important that people know enough about climate change to make an educated decision. Climate change is a huge threat and largely debated. All of the information about climate change (so far) can be used to say it’s real, and that it’s not. If climate change is real it has the potential to create extreme natural disasters, leading to many deaths. If climate change isn’t real, lots of money will have been wasted. Around 2010, 8.8$ billion had been spent, extremely close to doubling over the span of 7 years. That, in a worst case scenario, could lead to people
Global warming has become on of the most controversial issues in the media today. While most of the Western world countries have generally accepted the premise that man's chemical emissions in the atmosphere can and are affected by the world’s climate patterns, in the United States, the issue has become so politicized with many republicans challenging the science behind the theory. Global warming is a greenhouse effect whereby gases are trapped on the earth’s surface causing it to heat up (Maslin 14). It is based on the worldwide temperature records that have been maintained by human beings through their activities since the 1880,s. In addition, global warming is not only caused by human activities only but also through climate changes in solar radiance. The problem is that, humans continue to contribute to the global warming phenomenon. All citizens should work in reducing human activities that cause global warming and also support the development of nuclear power. Scientists deem that, global warming is mainly caused by human activities which accelerate the natural process by creating greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Human activities have become a great contribution to the greenhouse effect and this means that climate changes are inevitable. They further argue that, if these activities continue and are not reduced, it will lead to more trapping of energy radiated from the earth and this will likely lead to extreme weather and global warming. Global warming should be at reduced levels or else, it will be catastrophic.
The controversial subject of global warming according to a large amount of scientists is not a prominent concern. Over 31,000 scientists have signed on to a petition saying humans aren't causing global warming. More than 1000 scientists signed on to another report saying there is no global warming at all. There are tens of thousands of well-educated, mainstream scientists who do not agree that global warming is occurring at all. If so many scientists believe it is not a concern then why should we think any different? Well, a consensus shows that in reality 97% of all climate scientists agree that global warming is an issue and that it is most likely due to ...
The earth is a complex system, which continues to evolve and change. Climate change and global warming are currently popular in the political agenda. But what does “climate” really mean? The difference between weather and climate can be conveyed in a single sentence: “Climate is what you expect; weather is what you get.” Based on research of the geologic record, we know that climate change has happened throughout Earth's history and at present, ever-increasing evidence points to the roles that humans play in altering Earth systems. The Earth and its atmosphere receive heat energy from the sun; the atmospheric heat budget of the Earth depends on the balance between incoming solar radiation and outgoing radiation from the planet; which has been constant over the last few thousand years. However present evidence seems to suggest that the recent increase in temperature has been brought about by pollution of the atmosphere, in particular the release of huge amounts of carbon dioxide, mostly through Anthropogenic Forcing (human activity) and other various internal and external factors. I...
Global Warming One of the most substantial problems in the world today is global warming. This gradual warming of the earth is in occurrence at an extremely slow rate but it is happening. Many scientists believe that as human’s work and release greenhouse gases into the earth’s atmosphere, it can become dangerous for the long lasting life of humans and our environment. “Unless we take immediate action, the impacts of global warming will continue to intensify, grow ever more costly and damaging, and increasingly affect the entire planet - including you, your community, and your family” (“Global Warming Impacts”).
