When your college student you are starting a new journey. You have moved to a new area and are no longer living with your mother and your father. According to Girard, this is where you need to “stop worrying” and focus on what “you can do to better yourself.” Every student wants to graduate and work their dream job and live in their dream house, but like Girard said you have to work at it. Girard's belief in hard work can strike a variety of topics. His goal is to get his words out and inspire other students. Inspire other students to go out, work hard and pursue their dreams, just like he is. Whether your dream is to graduate college or become a professional athlete work toward your dream. "I believe in what Benjamin Franklin said 'If you
Samuelson uses his essay to explore a thesis that Americans are moving from a ‘work’ ethic to a ‘fun’ ethic. However, he doesn't spend much time explaining or introducing this, preferring to spend his time presenting facts, articles, quotes, polls and stories to prove his point. Unfortunately, as a reader, this choice of evidence, rather than solidifying his point, actually begs the question: what is his point? Samuelson spends very little time in the essay actually concluding or explaining his information. Instead, he buries the reader with facts and statistics, moving on from one factor to another before the reader even has the chance to grasp the importance of the previous one.
Graff insists that students should target their own passions and turn them into something academic and intellectual, as they get them hooked in the academic proceeding. Specifically, when students study about an area that is interesting to them, it is likely easier for them to perceive the given information and provide the arguments based on their own perspective about the topic reasonably and comprehensively. Young Graff, himself, admitted that “the sports world was more compelling than school because
In Jennie Capo Crucet 's essay, “Taking My Parents To College,” Crucet describes her own experience as a freshman college student who was faced with many challenges that were unknown to her, as well as the cluelessness of what the beginning of her freshman year would look like. I felt like the biggest impression Crucet left on me while I was reading her essay, was the fact that I can relate to her idea of the unknown of college life. Throughout her essay, she described her personal experiences, and the factors one might face as a freshman college student which involved the unknown and/or uncertainty of what this new chapter would bring starting freshman year of college. Crucet’s essay relates to what most of us
In the excerpt The Circuit”, written by Francisco Jimérez, the audience is able to see that you have to work hard in order to get what you want and need. This selection is historical since it was about a true event. The author here gives a detailed description about what his life was like back then, which makes this written in first person. Many people influenced his life, Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Lema, Mamá, Papá, Roberto, Francisco’s little brothers and sisters, Francisco’s classmates, labor camp foreman, school students, and the principal office helper. Mr. Sullivan allowed Francisco’s family to work for money. Mr. Lema allowed him to study more and feel more confident about himself. Mama, Papa, Roberto, and his siblings influenced his life with encouragement and hard work. His classmates made him feel a bit nervous and scared with their stares. The office room staff allowed him to go to school there and meet the rest of the students and teacher. The labor camp foreman didn’t allow Francisco’s family to work in the labor camp, which would have brought in a different setting, people, and work.
There are lots of examples of this in the book but here is a good example from Mawi when he ran track. “That summer, I would run at least six days a week and lift weights every other day. I did it, working during the day and training at night. Again, my hard work paid big dividends … I earned all-conference honors.” (115). Mawi joined the high school track and field team. During his sophomore and junior years, Mawi only made marginal progress. He wanted to change that. Mawi knew from his father that if you work hard, you will succeed. As you can see by this quote, Mawi did as his father said and no doubt, he succeeded in getting all-conference honors. Persisting is not just in sports, however, Mawi also worked hard at school. He recalls, “I stayed up night after night, rereading the chapters and reviewing my notes. I would get home from sports at 6 p.m., eat, help out around the house, and study until midnight. Then I would get up at 6 a.m. and do it all over again. The hard work paid off. I often got the highest grade in the class.” (112). As you can see, Mawi also worked hard at school. Mawi took an advanced us history class. He knew that by working hard and persisting, he could get the highest grade in the class. Mawi spent 6 hours studying and reviewing his work. He was committed to earning the highest grade in his class and his hard work paid off. Working hard and persisting is a valuable lesson to learn because it produces positive results. Also, it does not matter whether you are running track or studying for a test, if you work hard at anything and set your mind to it, you will achieve your
It seems as though the majority of college students these days aren’t looking to further their education because it’s what they really want, they do it to please their parents, to be accepted by society, or because there’s nothing else for them to do (Bird, 372). These expectations have led to students being unhappy and stressed, and have pushed them into a school or a job that they don’t particularly care for.
In Paul Toughmay’s “Who Gets to Graduate,” he follows a young first year college student, Vanessa Brewer, explaining her doubts, fears, and emotions while starting her college journey. As a student, at the University of Texas Brewer feels small and as if she doesn’t belong. Seeking advice from her family she calls her mom but after their conversation Brewer feels even more discouraged. Similar to Brewer I have had extreme emotions, doubts, and fears my freshman year in college.
My parents have this perfect life for me pictured in their heads, and the first thing they see me doing is going to college. They expect the best of me, and so by going to college, I will not only have fulfilled their goals for me, but I will have accomplished one of the goals I have set for myself. In our culture, when parents come to the age where they can’t support themselves, it is the duty of the children to look after them.
Moving out, meeting new people, enjoying the atmosphere you live in, challenging yourself, and getting the best education possible for yourself. That is what I am currently doing at Furman University; however, the road to arrive here was long and challenging. Naturally, my father was concerned about the cost of college, not Furman in particular, but college in general. Both my mother and I knew college wasn’t going to be cheap, especially for the experience I wanted. I was tasked with selling my father on the concept that college was going to be expensive, but it will all be worth it in the end because I will be getting the best education for myself and I will get the experience that I want.

When going off to college, a young adult may feel overwhelmed with the looming sense of responsibility hanging over his/her heads. Starting off a new life is hard and it seems as if when one finally gets the freedom they’ve been looking forward to for his/her entire adolescent life, they just don’t know where to start. Family member and friends can give all the advice they can but it will never be enough; they can make a list of all the items the new adult needs but it may be too long or too short for them. No matter what is given, it will never be good enough since everyone enters the new world in a different light. Nevertheless, no matter the start or outcome, there are important items that an emerging college student needs; the most important
...e life, college students need to learn when to put their hectic lifestyles aside to make way for activities and events that help take their minds off the work they have.
College gives people so many opportunities for independence from no longer relying on parents, to choosing if they go to class or not; however, another aspect that contributes to an individual’s sense of independence is the place they choose to live. Having the choice to either stay on-campus or off-campus is a decision that has many aspects to it. Where a student resides is chosen based on the different situations each person is in. Whether the student is an out of state student or they live down the street, and also their financial stability, plays a giant role in where they will end up living. Each option picked no matter if it is on or off campus comes with a different effect, or outcome. Being on campus gives the student more opportunities, and access to resources right at their doorstep, while being off-campus forces the student to become more responsible for themselves and keeping up with their duties.
Once you graduated from high school, College life is going to hit you. College students should know the main reasons and idea of being successful college students. Because when they join college life it 's totally different than high school and harder and responsible. Although college students get motivated, they still have to suffer from their responsibilities. .I remember when I started my first semester at college. It was different and tougher than high school. I felt like life was punishing me for my decision of reaching higher goals and education. I started first as a full time student, but then it got even tougher to me because I had to manage my time between my work and school. Time management was my only enemy during my first semester. Work and school classes took most of my time, effort and energy. My life changed when I started college because it taught me a lot of
Then you start to realize how much things have changed, and you realize the hardest part of college is balancing the two completely different worlds you now live in, trying desperately to hold on to everything all the while trying to figure out what you have to leave behind. In the matter of one day's traveling time, we will leave our world of living next door to our best friends, walking across campus to eat, instant messenger, 8:00am classes, and the perpetual procrastination to a world that will seem foreign to us despite the fact that we lived in it for eighteen years.
