Hard Work; a dreaded but vital step to becoming a great student. Working hard and practicing is the only way to become a successful student and anyone can work hard to make their dreams come true if they chose to take the extra step. Hard work inspires students to become great because it is the only way to achieve greatness, you will become a better student, and it makes your dreams come true.
First off, hard work is the only way to become great. To prove, a little girl told her dad when the dad thought that she would stop playing soccer if she didn’t have talent, “'Well, Daddy, I'd just have to try harder,'" (Were you born to be a Sports Star?). This shows that if you don’t have a lot of talent, it doesn’t matter because as long as you work hard, you can become great at anything. In addition, no one is able to become great without challenging practice because even “Many great athletes are legendary for the brutal discipline of their practice routines. Michael

For example, after practicing basketball for hours each day John Wooden realized that “Those hours of practice would pay off. In 1927, Wooden would lead his high school team to the Indiana state basketball championship.” (Remembering a basketball great). This explains that, because he practiced and worked hard a lot, John Wooden became better at what he was working at and was better than other players with talent that didn’t work as hard. Therefore, he was able to become a great basketball player. Additionally, more proof is, “In football, all-time great receiver Jerry Rice -passed up by 15 teams because they considered him too slow- practiced so hard that other players would get sick trying to keep up.” (Colvin 17) This proves that one of the best football players in history didn’t get his skills from birth. He had to persistently work and practice for them, slowly, over time. This shows that everyone can become great if they put in the time and
The theory that the more one practices the better one becomes. To follow the dream of excellence you must practice your assignment for a total of 10,000 hours or more. “The students who would end up the best in their class began to practice more than everyone else: six hours a week by age nine, eight hours a week by age twelve, sixteen hours by age fourteen, and up and up, until the age of twenty they were practicing well over thirty hours a week” (39) in a sense this excerpt confirms what society has told people for years, that practice makes perfect. Of course some people are born with raw talent, however how does one expect to improve their abilities if they do not rehearse. Anyone can be mediocre without practice, but in order to make it in the big shots one must give their one hundred and ten percent to beat out the competition. It’s all about how one distinguishes themself from another and the only way to do that is to show off that skill that has been practiced repeatedly. Preferably 10,000 hours
The road to greatness is a long path filled with struggle and time. Based on research by the best-selling author Malcom Gladwell inside his book Outliers popularized the idea of 10,000 hours of guided practice “the magic number of greatness”(Gladwell, 47). With enough practice he said anyone could achieve any work that of a professional. While some say the 10,000 hour rule is the key to success I believe that success is based on genetics, talent, and time period. It is whether one was born with the talent, achieved it later within life or was born during the wrong time period is what makes a master out of someone. Where the 10,000 hour rule is not a truth.
talents in music and sports; although, we have been taught the impact of individuals like
Everyone grows up with a dream, but everyone will not get the opportunity to do so, being born in the financial situation of their family. In third world countries people struggle to make money on a daily basis. These people want more than what they have, but to attain those extra luxuries, they have to sacrifice their current possessions. This is not possible in as sacrificing what they have can lead to starvation. They want a better future but they need to be able to live on a daily basis. It is called investment in the future vs temporary happiness. Attaining security requires risking one’s belongings to earn liberty and equality in the future. Although temporary contentment must be sacrificed to attain security in life, it must be one’s
Within his book he uses results from a study that surveyed a group of violinist from a music schools. The study concluded that the violinist who practiced for 10,000 hours or more would play professionally, and the violinist who only had 5,000 hours of practice would become school music teachers. Malcolm Gladwell also uses hockey players as a source of evidence stating that the younger they start playing with the all-star teams the more practices they will gain adding up to the minimum of 10,000 hours that they need to become successful and play in professional level. To sum up his claim of 10,000 hours he states “And what’s more, the people at the very top don’t work just harder or even much harder than everyone else. They work much, much harder,” (39) meaning that those who are at the highest point of success are there because they have practiced harder to get there than anyone else around them. However looking back to what Sonia Alleyne wrote about Frans Johnson’s book, areas such as music and sports are areas where rules never change. Thus deliberate practice and reaching the magical number of 10,000 hours would make a violinist or hockey player successful. Along with the result of David Z. Hambrick’s study even if 10,000 hours of deliberate practice is the ideal goal of individuals trying to reach the highest point of success, consideration must be taken that there are some individuals who have innate talent and skill with the ability to reach this point of success requiring less deliberate
In outliers, Gladwell (2008) examines what makes some people remarkably more successful than others. It is commonly thought that talent, intelligence, and hard work, far above average, is all that is needed to gain great success. Gladwell challenges this belief through thorough background research on some distinguished outliers. I intend to summarize his key points, necessary for an outlier, and apply them to my chosen outlier, Lionel Messi. In a world where success is said to be achieved through talent and hard work, it seems to have a lot more to do with unfair advantages and opportunities. The key aspects Gladwell (2008) relates to an outlier include innate talent, opportunities, practice, upbringing and family influence, cultural legacy, and the relevance or importance of one’s work. I will now go on to further explain and expand on these characteristics individually.
Everyone wants to get better at something, but some want it more than others. In “How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place of Higher Learning and You at the Podium”, the narrator wants to get better at basketball, so he wakes up everyday at 4:30 to go with his dad to his work. Everyday, the narrator would wait 3 hours in his dad’s car until the gym opened, only to sit on the bench and watch the other men play basketball. Finally, one of the best players, Dante, tells the narrator he can play but he’ll get “smoked”. However, the narrator proved him wrong. The narrator learns that if you persevere, work hard, and have confidence, your dreams may come true. In How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place
...cally fit man. He was known for his HUGE appetite and big belly hanging out of his uniform. But he was determined (like Muhammad and Jordan) to put in the hours of PRACTICE and hard work to make himself a better player. All three of these famous sport idols (there were more of course) showed that that they had the growth mindset. They understood that it takes time, effort and determination to achieve their goals! They had to practice to get better. They had to put in their time of hours of hours of practice to become who they are today. They had the character, the heart, the will and the Mind of a Champion. They were champions because they had the growth mindset. They saw setbacks as motivating, to try their best, by learning and improving. They took charge of their processes that bring success and learned how to maintain them. (Dweck, 2006, p. 98-100).
No one would expect musicians to pick up an instrument and play without being taught how to play it. They are taught to play the instrument and they invest endless hours before this expertise is reached. Without knowing that, it 's easy to jump to conclusions and assume that they have always been this good all the way. If you have a goal and you feel that you don 't have the talent to achieve it, whether you believe it or not, you already have the necessary skill required to achieve it. The missing piece of the mystery is not that you lack talent, but to invest the hard work. Instead of seeing talent as something inborn in others, recognize that talent is inborn in you as well. You just need to put in the hours to bring it out of
As a young undergraduate, I attempted to prove myself as a hardworking student by attending my courses focused and well prepared, and conducting my assignments as required. Through my undergraduate studies, I was fortunate to participate in several student and voluntary activities. Furthermore, determinant to acquire relevant practical experience, I trained and worked at several establishments applying my theoretical ed...
One of the most important thing in basketball is the ability to play games and practicing as a team. When a person practices they gain the ability to win games but when they don’t practice they are more likely to lose there games because they are not as experienced as if they did practice. The more experience a player has the more successful they are gonna be out on the court compared to a player who never practices with there team will not be as successful to win games. No matter what sport a person plays there is always room for improvement and that leads to my next topic about the effects of practicing for basketball and how it can effect the skill level of the player.
...if every time you practice piano you improve a lot, wouldn't you be more likely to practice a lot” yes this is the type of trait that needs to be developed like reading, playing soccer , and walking we aren’t just born with it so class time for me would be for practicing my essay writing and getting better at it. Grit is the way that we more accurately read who is a top notch and who is just there but not really there with an open mind. “The most successful people in life are both talented and gritty in whatever they've chosen to do” having a mind set like these people mirroring their strategies will only set us up for success because they have the formula we just need to get it. We are the ones who control our future so we need to follow the great minds that have already done it to put us in a better position to improve and see new thing that will than help us.
I believe that hard work is the real treasure of a person because without hard work we cannot achieve our dreams and goals in life. No one can achieve success without doing hard work. It starts when we stop looking for alternatives or shortcuts towards success. We need to remember that there are no short cuts to success. Hard work, complimented with an intense desire to struggle and to achieve success is the only sure way of reaching success that you have always wanted. Hard work is one of the secret for us to be successful in life. Laziness and sluggishness makes one’s life a curse and only hard work can make your life a blessing. We cannot work hard if we don’t have goals. The meaning of goal according to Wikipedia is a desired result of a
Fortunately, life has taught me that it is better to rely on studying, practice, and God rather than your own intelligence, athletic skill, or luck. No matter what area of life, success takes a little bit of hard work. The many people and events I’ve encountered throughout my years have “provided a sound basis for my attitudes and conduct from that day to this.”
“If you have good character, you’re a diligent worker and you do what your coaches ask you to do,’ says Richt. ‘All of our players are talented, but the ones who don’t have extra baggage of being in trouble academically, socially, or something else seem to rise to the top.’” (Maxwell, p.42)
