Students have been using technology in schools for years, and studies have shown technology to be distracting towards them. While technology in schools is not new, recent studies have found that technology is distracting.Three ways technology distracts students are: Games,Social Media, and Texting.
Social media such as snapchat can be very tempting to students while in class as students can send messages,pictures,and videos instantly. Many student get distracted by Snapchat and other social media because of how easy it is to send funny photos and messages to friends in short burst without anything being saved. Other social media like facebook can be seen by various people making students want to check in regularly to see who's liked or commented on their photos. According to Cengage, fifty nine percent of students have admitted to checking social media sites during class.

Students are also susceptible to playing games when they are supposed to be doing work.
According to Cengage forty five percent of students are distracted by games. Games are easy to come by and most of the time can be found for free which makes it easy for students to access games. Games are very addicting because they give you small ingame rewards. Games can also be played online with other players which can be addictive because they often have no end. Students can be easily distracted by games when: working on schoolwork,bored in class,or have nothing to do.
Lastly, students get distracted the most when texting during school work. Texting is a major cause for distractions and according to Cengage sixty percent of students have admitted to texting while in class. Texting is distracting because it's easy to do with very little time involved. Also it's a rapid conversation making it hard to focus on the task at hand. school.. Some studies have said technology prepares students for the future because technology skills are essential in order to be successful. While technology can prepare you for some parts of future workforce things like social skills,emotional iq do not require technology. Technology does not need to be teached in schools for the future because it can be taught on the job. Other studies have said Technology in the Classroom makes learning fun. Technology is not needed to make a fun and engaging atmosphere at school,while it can be used for fun activities it’s not required and can limit creativity. In conclusion technology is very distracting towards students because of: Games,social media and texting. Social media is great for short conversations that don’t save,but many students are tempted to check social media at school to see if they have received any likes,comments,messages exc. Games are also very distracting because they can be found for free on almost all technology and are very addicting to play. Lastly texting is very distracting because students want to check their text and make sure someone responded.
Michael Rubinkam’s “Texting in class is Rampant” brings awareness to the fact that most students use their phones during a lecture to text. Many professors are starting to notice it and some have even gone to extremes by having punishments if they see a phone out. Though there are some positive effects, the adverse impact of technology on education has been extraordinary. The technology community has worked hard to bring useful technology into our classrooms, all with good intentions to broaden our knowledge. With these good intentions also came about unwanted side effects such as distraction and disruption in the classroom. I can clearly remember many of my teachers yelling at us to put our cell phones, iPods, and iTouch phones away especially during lecture and exams. The yelling was not without just cause, students cheated with their devices along with updating their Facebook pages during class too.
Studies have shown that students may be paying more attention to their phones than they are to their class work. Often during class, a student will be texting a friend with some unimportant message instead of paying attention to the teacher. They may look like they are quietly listening to the instructor , but under the edge of the desk, the hem of a jacket, or a stack of papers their fingers may be typing out some chit-chat news that has nothing to do with what they should be learning. Professor Fang-Yi Flora Wei, Ph.D. of the University of Pittsburg points out that "In-class texting interferes with the students ability to pay attention, which is necessary for effective cognitive learning (sciencedaily)." When we cannot understand or remember information, the result is usually poor grades. Cell phones may be the top of devices those distract students in class. The ubiquitous problem originates from the cell phones. I’m also a high school student, I can see some of my classmates use it for texting every day in class instead of listening to the teacher. Students also use it for playing video games, listening to music, watching videos. And definitely, while you are playing with your phones, you will not be able to absorb the lesson that the teacher is trying to teach. It’s not easy to do two things at the same time, except you are super. Have you ever tried to draw a circle by your left hand and draw a rectangle by the other hand simultaneously? Social Media has become a very essential tool in the society; in addition, it has a huge impact on communication and learning process. Social media is defined as websites and applications used for social networking. “As of September 2013, seventy-one percent of online adult use Facebook, eighteen percent use Twitter and seventeen percent use Instagram, twenty-two percent use PInterest, and another twenty-two percent use LinkedIn. In addition, "Between February 2005 and August 2006, the use of social networking sites among young adult internet user ages eighteen and twenty-nine jumped from nine percent to forty-nine percent. (2011) conducted qualitative study that organized surveys to investigate different types of social media among first year university students. “Time diary suggests that the majority of students use electronic media to multitask” Jacobsen (2011). The results showed that there as a negative relationship between the types of social media and first semesters academic outcomes. “On average, students spent approximately 52 minutes per day, (usually Facebook). Students reported that daily they spent on average just over half an hour e-mailing, about 10 minutes chatting or instant messaging” Jacobsen (2011). Recent discovery by Junco (2011) “resulted in students who update their status more often projected in lower academic outcome and their overall GPA dropped”. Junco and Cotton (2012) “found students who spent more time using information and communication technologies while doing homework—specifically Facebook and texting—had lower college grade point averages”. Junco and Cotton (2011) “found that students who spent more time using instant messaging while studying or doing schoolwork had lower grades”. It was found that students who used social media or cell phones during studying were more likely to be distracted and multitask. In the Jacobsen (2011) study one of the limitations was the way they measured the electronic/social media and restrictions on the data that was produce.
