The healthcare system is growing fast and is becoming more complex. Obtaining a bachelor or master degree in nursing gets you prepared enough to fulfill the everyday demands of patients’ needs. However, being interested in the professional advancement of the profession makes it crucial to be part of a nursing organization. As a future geriatric nurse, I think that it is very important to join a professional organization that targets my vocation. Therefore, I have decided to join the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA) in the near future.
The Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association was established in 1981 by a group of Gerontological Nurse Practitioners with the main purpose of offering conferences designed to meet the needs of gerontological nurses. This organization is currently open to every nurse who is seeking continuing education in gerontological care as well as peer support from experienced clinicians (gapna.org). The five goals advanced in their website are as follow: “1) Advocate quality care for older adults, 2) Promote professional development, 3) Provide continuing gerontological education, 4) Enhance communication and professional collaboration among healthcare providers, and 5) Educate consumers regarding issues of aging” (gapna.org).

Due to an ageing population , The Francis Report recommends the introduction of a new status of nurse, the “registered older persons nurse”. One of the illnesses linked in with this is dementia, and multiple factors relating to dementia are having an impact on how nurses are trained and their deliverance of services. In 2013, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) began a new development program to transform dementia care for hospitals. There aim is to develop skills and knowledge related to dementia, the roles of all those who are involved, understanding the development of action plans that identify key changes.
The author is a registered nurse care pathways coach at the Alabama Quality Assurance Foundation with responsibilities for decreasing avoidable hospitalizations in a local long-term care facility. He has 22 years of experience in the nursing profession, including psychiatric, medical surgical, and geriatric nursing. He has developed an interest in providing advanced nursing practice as a nurse practitioner using holistic approaches as he has matured as a nursing professional. His desire to improve access to primary health care and improve the quality of care for the poor and elderly is a decisive influence on his future as an advanced practice nurse.
A professional nursing practice is predicated on many tenets, which ensure optimal functionality and growth. A successful organization requires the systematic employment of ethical values, as well as structural, organizational and relational leadership. In essence, a nursing practice must fortify its corporate structure, productivity, operational flow, and professional relationships in order to thrive. The purpose of an organizational meeting is to address the foundational elements of a successful practice. Along with delineating guidelines, a meeting should reinforce structure, a unified sense of purpose, and address lingering issues.
The recommendations called for increased opportunities for nurses to be leaders, manager, and executives in the various settings that they are employed. In addition, there was a push for more interdisciplinary collaboration during training as well as in the various levels of professional interactions (IOM, 2011). In practice these recommendations suggest more diverse performance measures, pooling of interdisciplinary funds, organizations supporting nurses in leadership, and encouraging nurses to work with information technology and medical device developers and manufacturers on new products.
Additionally, the leader motivates, increases job satisfaction, involves the team in decision making, develops team members’ skills, and a role model (Kent, n.d.). The above descriptions fit my informal nursing leadership in the way I act in my practice. For example, I motivate the team to work together and collaboratively on delivering a safe and quality patient centered care thru the organization’s mission and vision. I set a role model on how, and effective communication is essential in relationships. Additionally, I encourage the team to continue their education, and I have demonstrated the last two years working with this organization, I have become certified in hospice and palliative care, preceptorship, and have enrolled in a nursing baccalaureate

The opportunities for leadership skills development and mentorship programs should be available for nurses in any specialty. Nurse leaders at the bedside as well as boardroom bring critical skills, coordinate and manage care, advancing community health (Fineberg & Lavizzo-Mourey, 2013). Overview: Gerontological Nurse Practitioners are certified registered nurses who serve elderly people suffering from chronic illnesses. These nurses are found to work in different healthcare facilities like hospitals or nursing homes with facility for rehabilitation, ambulatory care as well as care management companies. They can also start their own individual practices if allowed by the state regulations. Gerontological nurse practitioners identify and take care of the physical, mental needs of the aged patients. They are specially trained to understand the needs of geriatric patients.
Evidence-Based Quality Improvement for Older Adults Gerontological nursing is having the knowledge and skills to take care of the older adult of at least sixty-five (Tabloski, 2014). The older adult population is continuing to grow more and more every year, especially since the baby booming era is going to retire soon. It is important that nurses gain the knowledge to be able to care for this population. It is also imperative to find more nurses and doctors wanting to specialize in the older adult.
Geriatric Medical Assisting is more than just handing out medications and taking specimens; it’s about creating a connection and helping these people live out the rest of their days with grace, dignity and happiness. Working with Geriatrics is not the same as working with all other types of patients. Everyone has their own wants and needs that need to be met. I plan on doing everything I can to earn about geriatrics and do the best I can to take care of this population of people.
As the nation continues to age, the sheer number of baby boomers exceed health care professionals, more specifically nurses. The demand for gerontological nurses will grow exponentially as the years roll by. This shift in paradigm reveals the necessity for gerontologic education and training. This discussion board will discuss the meaning behind “gerontological nurse”, thoughts on why few students choose the field of geriatrics, and ideas that would spark interest in this specialty. Abstract In the world today, the aging population has been identified as one of the main issues facing global health care systems. In general nursing excellence can be thought of as a characteristics or traits that define a level of patient care that is safe, culturally-competent and is patient-centered as well as family-centered. Healthcare organizations are critical for maintaining nursing excellence, they generate the energy for the flow of ideas and proactive work needed to advocate for the needs of patients. This post will discuss two of those critical organizations and how they play a part in nursing excellence.
Nursing is a multifaceted profession that requires constant engaging, caring, and motivating nurse leaders and role models. Recognizing and developing nurse leaders is essential to today’s health care environment, but is one of the most challenging tasks in the profession (Scully, 2015). Joining a profession nursing organization was strongly recommended and after reading through week three, I realized the importance and am eager to make my steps as a nurse to make a difference. In week four, her recommendations were that having both sexes on a team can be a valuable in bridging the gap in communication. We do need to learn to communicate with different cultures as well as handling gender differences in the workplace. Having a variety of input does make for a better
