Overview:
Gerontological Nurse Practitioners are certified registered nurses who serve elderly people suffering from chronic illnesses. These nurses are found to work in different healthcare facilities like hospitals or nursing homes with facility for rehabilitation, ambulatory care as well as care management companies. They can also start their own individual practices if allowed by the state regulations.

Gerontological nurse practitioners identify and take care of the physical, mental needs of the aged patients. They are specially trained to understand the needs of geriatric patients.

Qualification:
The basic qualification to become a gerontological nurse practitioner is to have a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing. Then a student must sit for the National Council Licensure Examination and earn the license certification to practice as a registered nurse. Additional education like master’s of science degree in nursing will help nurses in their career advancements. Also, a certification in Gerontological nursing offered by the Gerontological Advanced Nurses Association is available which will provide the required expertise to the nurses to give the best possible care to the aged people. They often treat aged patients suffering from dementia, memory problem, dehydration, problem in movement, depression and dietary problems etc.

They must have considerate attitude towards the aged patients. They provide disease prevention and palliative care to the patients and find out treatment strategies for them. In many cases they make home visits to treat patients. Their other responsibilities include :

• They give advise for tests and interpret the results
• According to the patients’ need and their reimbursement restrictions, they prepare care plan and implement
