One of the main focus of geography as a discipline is the study of place. It is very common among individuals that when an object, an event or even a word is used repeatedly it loses its value or meaning, unfortunately place is no exception (Tuan,1977). The word place has become so familiar that rarely do people take time to think what it actually means and perhaps consider its importance. In his attempt to differentiate two familiar words that are used interchangeable space and place, Tuan (1979) defines places as spaces which people occupy and over long periods of time grow attached to and have better understanding of.

Outdoor education is basically learning that is conducted outside the classroom, where learners get to not only develop their cognitive skills but also get to have personal interaction with both the natural and human environment (Katsamagka, 2013). One way of doing outdoor education is taking learners to a field trip. On the field trip, learners can be taken to visit places like where they are shown caves and rocks with paintings drawn by people from previous centuries. They would get to understand how those people interacted with each other and some of their beliefs and how they viewed the places they lived in. What is more interesting is that the places that display these rocks or gives this information has people who care about them and have high sensitivity to the place. For example visitors are not allowed to touch the paintings on the rocks because they might remove the painting; that on its own shows being sensitive to place and understanding its value.
Learners can also visit different communities and get to ask individuals questions that would reflect on their sense of place. For example ask individuals what they would do and how they would feel if a new development were to happen in the area they live in. From looking at the different answers and people’s reactions learners would then get a clear understanding of what sensitivity to place
In the book The Power of Place: Geography, Destiny, and Globalization’s Rough Landscape, the author, Harm de Blij, argues that where we are born and our geography can affect who we are and what we will become. He applies his knowledge of geography and other relatable information such as health, economy, languages, and several other areas of subject. Each person has a place that calls to them, a house, plot of land, town, a place that one can call home. It fundamentally changes a person, becoming a part of who they are. The old summer cabins, the bedroom that was always comfortable, the library that always had a good book ready. The places that inspire a sense of nostalgic happiness, a place where nothing can go wrong.
Harm de Blij and his “The Power of Place: Geography, Destiny, and Globalization’s Rough Landscape” truly describes how geography is displayed in the world today. In particular on of the major themes that he discusses is the idea of globalization. He actually calls these people the “globals.” In the very beginning of his book he describes two different types of peoples: Locals and Globals. The difference between these people is that Locals are the poorer people, not as mobile, and more susceptible to the concept of place. On the other hand the Globals are the fortunate population, and are a small group of people who have experienced globalization firsthand (5). This idea of globalization is a main theme that Blij refers to throughout the book, however he also indirectly references the five themes of cultural geography: culture regions, cultural diffusion, cultural interaction, cultural ecology, and cultural landscapes. Through Blij’s analysis these five themes are revealed in detail and help explain his overall idea of globalization in the world today.
The main ideas presented in “Why Geography Matters…More Than Ever!” revolve around what exactly geography is, and the implications of the subject. Geography is the study of the physical world and human actions, it also covers the affects of human actions. Geography influences a plethora of topics and geographers do research on numerous subjects. “Geographers do research on glaciations and coastlines, on desert dunes and limestone caves, on weather and climate, even on plants and animals”(7). The author stresses how underrated geography is the present times, and how the introduction of social studies have doomed the subject of geography for future generations. The Five Themes of Geography are: Location – Absolute points on a map or grid or Relative to where something may be; Place – The physical and/or human characteristics of a locations; Human/Environment Interactions – How humans have impacted the landscape or environment; Relationship between places Movement – How humans interact on the earth (i.e. how they communicate over distance (short or long)) and Regions – a unit of space that has commonalities defined by physical, human and environmental geography. The Explorers of the New World may have not known what the Five Themes of Geography were but they quickly learned. Of the five themes the ones that they all took advantage of was the physical Location and Place as they learned to navigate to and from as well as through their new environments. Previously, human boundaries were determined the same way that animal, plant, and ecosystem boundaries were defined. Everyday experience tells us that different actions need different environments to take place in a satisfactory way. This fact is of course taken into consideration by current theory of planning and architecture, but so far the problem has been treated in a too abstract way. ‘Taking place’ is usually understood in a quantitative, functional sense with implications such as spatial distribution and dimensioning. But inter-human functions are not similar everywhere, they take place in very different ways and demand places with different properties, in accordance with different cultural traditions and different environmental conditions.

Since the beginning of humankind, the study of geography has captured the imagination of the people. In ancient times, geography books extolled tales of distant lands and dreamed of treasures. A place, for me, is somewhere that I am familiar with and I recognize it in some way as my own special geographic location.
