Lane Bryant and Ashley Stewart both feature plus size women apparel that includes intimates & swimsuit, shoes & accessories, dresses, jeans, tops, and coats. The women in both websites are portrayed to wear sizes ranging from at least a fourteen up to a twenty-eight. The women show they are comfortable with their skin with a high level of confidence. Both websites have the women portrayed as a beautiful inspiration to other ladies. Some of the differences perceived in the Ashley Stewart website is that they are sexy, hot, and sultry. The site uses many adjectives to describe the women’s looks. Some of the women are listed as fabulous, daring, fierce, and hotness with swag (Ashley Stewart, n.d.). They even have an Instagram section on the home
page where customers can post their images to show off their style in different swimwear, cocktail dresses, and catsuits. Another difference for Ashley Stewart is that the lowest size they offer is a twelve and they go up as far as a size 32. Lane Bryant’s highest size is a twenty-eight. Lane Bryant’s (2016) website does not depict the women to have an embellished edge like Ashley’s. Instead, they are more sleek, happy, and satisfied with a laid back kind of feel. While some of the lingerie sections will show women with a sexy look, the majority of the website has a more casual outlook. Some changes seen on media images of women would be full-figured ladies in the spotlight as oppose to past years. Earlier this year, American Eagle, a company who once portrayed only small models, has a launched a campaign to highlight a curvy plus size model (Ross, 2016). This model is being presented ‘as-is,’ with no photos being untouched by make-up. Also, more schools are making it possible for girls of all sizes to be cheerleaders, dance on the step team, and participate in pageants.

"For most of history, anonymous was a woman", quotes Virginia Woolf. (1) Throughout history, women’s lives were restricted to domesticity and family, and they were left oppressed and without political voice. Over the decades the roles of women have dramatically changed from chattels belonging to their husbands to gaining independence. Women became famous activists, thinkers, writers, and artists, like Frida Kahlo who was an important figure for women’s independence. The price women paid in their fight for equality was to die or be imprisoned along with men, and they were largely forgotten in written history. However, the roles they took on were wide-ranging which included working in factories, tending the troops, taking care of children and working at home. Frida Kahlo was a talented artist whose pride and self-determination has inspired feminists and many others. She was an important figure in the women’s movement not because she fought for women’s rights in an organized way, but because of the way she lived her life. “I suffered two grave accidents in my life. One in which a street car knocked me down, the other accident is Diego” (2), says Frida Kahlo. She was in a turbulent relationship with her husband Diego Rivera, but she claimed her independence from him. The experiences in her life shared with her nature and strength made her famous and well-known worldwide as a woman of independence, courage and nonconformity. Women like Frida Kahlo have fought for their independence and contrasting the modern-day women to the women in 1900s, we can see that their roles have changed and in return they received their independence. After centuries of conforming to female stereotypes, women are gradually taking control of their own image of...
According to one of my sources “67% of americans wear a size 14 or above, yet most stores don’t even carry those numbers!” So how come they think they can still sell items with the tag “one size fits all” when they don’t even carry the sizes that 67% of Americans wear. “$240 billion dollars worth of apparel bought online, over 40% is returned because of a sizing issue.” Which is a hassle for the shopper and companies who now have to deal with billions of “free returns.” “How infuriating is it to eagerly await an order, only to discover that none of it fits and you are left standing in a sea of wrapping, with the hassle of returns to deal with?” Companies are going to “leave out more people then we are going to include.” says my

Changes in society have brought issues regarding gender stereotype. Gender roles are shifting in the US. Influences of women’s movement (Firestone, Firestone, & Catlett, 2006) and gender equality movement (e.g., Obergefell v. Hodges (2015)) have contributed to expanding social roles for both genders. Nevertheless, gender stereotypes, thus gender stereotype roles continue to exist in the society (Skelly & Johnson, 2011; Wood & Eagly, 2010). With changes in gender roles, pervasiveness of gender stereotype results in a sense of guilt, resentment, and anger when people are not living up to traditional social expectations (Firestone, Firestone, & Catlett, 2006). Furthermore, people can hold gender stereotype in pre-reflective level that they may
