Gender inequality in today’s society still places a woman at the disadvantage. They are criticized harshly by society. Gender inequality is clearly displayed in Michael Kimmel “Angry White Men” and Susan Crawford Sullivan “Living Faith.” These two book show how each sex takes on this traditionally socialized gender role in society. In this paper, I argued that traditional gender is clearly displayed in mainstream culture and society.
Traditionally, women left to deal with traditional values and norms. They left to live out the traditionally gendered roles enforced. Women are seen to take of children and so the housework but when they take on another role, they are seen as a bad mother. Single mothers work for their children daily and face a lot of challenges as well. They place their children in churches because they trust the church would teach them well. Most single mothers work a second shift meaning as soon they come from working 8 hours or more. They must come home a do the cleaning of the house, and taking care of the children. Mothers who are in poverty attend church less although they spiritual. They do not attend the congregation because they feel as though they do not belong in it. Although they might feel this sense of rejection, they still send their children to church. They acknowledge the importance of going to church. Faith keeps these mothers going because they have faith in their children and they have faith that tomorrow is going to be better. They hope to help the children have a better life than they have lived. Religion influences how a mother see work, welfare, and motherhood (Sullivan 2012). Most single mothers believe in hard work, and not depending on someone for a handout. They would rather depend on their own strength than depending on welfare. Faith influence how they see welfare because the bible teaches self-dependency. Sullivan “Living Faith” shows that women are left with the responsibility of taking care of the children, and for that reason why are rejected and made to feel shame for being a single mother and having a broken home. Women grow up with this maternal behavior they learned from their parents and those surrounding them because there was a strong emphasis on taking up traditional mother
