However it is our society’s reality. Even if the statement above were to be applied to everyone, both male and female how about the world’s point of view on women? Clearly women have made tremendous differences regarding equality in recent decades however; we still live in a society in which the worth of women is solely based on physical appearance and not their own special skills that can be portrayed in the work force. But the fact that they are not even given a chance to do so is just unfair. Also because the women look a certain way, the employers of the big companies use that to calculate how much they get paid, whether they are a full-time worker, part-time worker, or temporary worker, no matter what they are still being paid less than the men. Gender roles are a staple construct of human civilization, designating the behaviors and lifestyles that society expects out of its participants, with gender as the defining characteristic. Historically, females have been at the forefront of the conversation, with feminism regarded as the principal solution to the well-established issue of gender inequality. However, this is foolish. Throughout the world, discrimination in all forms has continued to be a constant struggle; whether it’s racial, gender based, religion, beliefs, appearance or anything that makes one person different from another, it’s an everyday occurrence. A major place that discrimination is occurring at is in the workplace. One of the largest problems discrimination issues is believed to be gender. Women, who have the same amount of experience as men are not getting paid at the same rate as men, these women also are equally trained and educated. According to the article Gender Pay, it was discovered in 2007 that a woman makes 81 cents for every dollar a man earns.(“Gender Pay”) . This shouldn’t be happening in today’s society for the fact the society lived in today is suppose to be more accepting. Men are viewed as being more popular, valuable and having higher powers than women. The Reason Discrimination is involved in the equal pay equal work is because of the significance it has to how some businesses pay their employees.
There has always been a certain status quo when it comes down to getting hired in todays’ society. Many people do not realize that there can be many qualities derived from those who are different than the “norm”. With the workforce rapidly growing there is a demand for acceptance that can no longer be avoided. America has become the melting pot of the world, but there is still a lot of resistance against people who do not look like the average worker. There are many forms of gender discrimination including: hiring, firing, salary, benefits, promotions, work assignments, layoffs, training, sexual harassment, offensive jokes about one sex, and employer policies. It can affect the young or old, single, married, pregnant or nursing. These actions can come from anyone connected to the job, such as a manager or a client.
Gender Discrimination is a topic that has been going on within our country for a long time. Women have never been treated equality as men. Women are living in a society that they are known as property. Many men are unprejudiced discriminators since they do not see women as equal values to themselves:
Sexism is a major factor in the workforce.Today male and female have a hard time breaking into the opposite gender dominated fields. This has happened because of the media, it has showed us that male have certain “right” jobs, as well as female. Female still dominate traditional female professions like cosmetology jobs are 92.9 percent women working them(Wolfe). If a man were to get into cosmetology they would most likely be judged for having that job, because we stereotype that they can't have a feminine job. Women have a harder time getting into high level positions. “Women make up only 21 of the S&P’s 500 CEOs,” (Berman). This has happened because the media has set in place stereotypes that it is wrong for women to have high level positions. It is getting better, in 2013 women chief financial officers increased 35 percent at large U.S. companies from 2012 (Frier and Hymowitz). The job market for men and women is still unfair but it is starting to get equal.
In addition, women are paid less than men for the same type of work. According to Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg mentions that women were paid fifty-nine cents for every dollar men were paid in 1996, but women protested to raise the compensation to seventy-seven cents (6). This means that even though a woman and a man perform the same work such as an engineer does, both do the same assignments and have the same responsibilities in the technology place, men are paid twenty three cents more than women. Moreover, women suffer from “gender discount” which means women have to pay for being part of the workplace or society ...
Since the time women were eligible to be an employee of a workplace, they have become victims of discrimination. Discrimination is the practice of treating a person or group of people differently from other people (Webster, 2013). Thousands of women have suffered from discrimination in workplaces because they are pregnant, disabled, or of the opposite sex. It is crazy to think that someone would fire a woman because she became pregnant and needed to have some work adjustments ("Pregnancy and parenting,"). A woman goes through a lot to give birth to children, and men will never understand the complications a mother encounters during the pregnancy. Sadly, males think that pregnant women don’t make a working hand, which is totally wrong.
