SWOT Analysis-Gateway Corridor Jacquelyn Layman Situation being analysed: Proposed Gateway Corridor BRT/LRT Project Strengths The overall reduced impact to the environment is an important element in the decision to implement mass transit in this region. One of the major concerns is the motor vehicle congestion, and the need for a more eco-friendly solution to meet the needs of the growing population. Another major concern is the lack of public transit options to the outlying suburban regions, limiting access to schools, jobs, museums, etc… that are located within the city limits. Transit Oriented Development or TOD, is a mixed-use residential and commercial area that has been designed to maximize access to public transportation ("Transit …show more content…
Much of the local opposition comes in the form of public opinion that these funds could be better used to improve existing transportation systems and save the taxpayers money. Several alternatives have been suggested, and a series of Scoping Committee meetings, public opinion meetings have been held to find the Locally Preferred Alternative or LPA for each community ("Gateway Corridor Study | Alternatives Analysis Transit Study," n.d.). Environmental Impact Studies have also been initiated to aid in the decision process. Lack of coordination / cooperation between local businesses and communities and the planning committees also pose a problem. Many feel there is not enough publicity for the project and that there is not enough public input due to lack of available literature. Rider safety is also a weakness expressed by many. As has been exhibited in the past on other local light rail and bus mass transit projects, rider safety at the stations can be an issue for concern ("Summary of Public Involvement and Comments during the Gateway Corridor Scoping Process," n.d., …show more content…
Ridership is believed by many to be far lower than the numbers predicted by the transit commission, and existing businesses in the path of and near the development of the new project say they will be irreconcilably affected by the project. Homeowners are predicting a reduction in the value of their homes and land, and the overall opinion of the public is that the economy will not improve based solely on the introduction of a mass transit

...ay of laws and reasonable policy. Dr. Williams is obviously an individual of knowledge and pride, however, his education may not provide the key his views of positive policy. Instead of viewing the governments? attempt at safety as a negative authority, he should reflect on the physical benefits instead of the intangible conflicts. Therefore, the ?Click It or Ticket? article described one way of viewing a current law of governing safety. Dr. Williams clearly disagrees, but an audience should generally view the attempt at safety as the proper acts of government as opposed to the negative. Safety is a necessity for a civil society, and click it or ticket laws allow for a safer than nothing transportation situation. This should be appreciated and will eventually quiet all critics by accurate statistics of saved lives while maintaining a reasonable spending platform.

The rail road is not a safe place to be tresspassing on. Trains weigh thousands of pounds and can kill you easily. You should stay at least 5 feet away from a train because they usally go 3 feet out from the track. If you get stuck or if your car breaks down on the track call 911 so that oncoming trains know. You should always look and pay attention to where you are going. Don't listen to music, put down you're hood, and also don't look at your phone. Look both ways because trains can arrive or leave at any time. When the rail guard is down no traffic is allowed to go until the train has left and the guards go up. "Racing a train to the crossing is foolish. You will never have another chance if you lose." stated from " Unit 5 lesson 7" the
On February 10, 2001, District of Columbia resident, 57 year-old Barbara Joyner’s life changed forever. That day, the retired duty nurse was a passenger on a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) bus. As a result of her decision to take a bus to get her to where she needed to go, she became permanently injured and her life was irrevocably changed. One might assume her injuries came as a result of a bus crash, since according to a 2010 study from the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute, there was an average of 63,000 buses were involved in crashes from 199 to 2005. In these accidents, there were 14,000 that caused injuries to the passengers of some kind. The study also found inter-city buses to have
It needs to improve its areas of “walkability” and encourage health and environmental factors by adding bike lanes to the heavily biked Church Street. Its roads are not overburdened and its public transit systems are frequent, and highly accessible. One factor to be drawn from this conclusion is that Church and Wellesley’s overall transportation success is not indicative of the GTA as a whole. In fact, its success is the result of government policies that have abetted a focus on highly trafficked, highly populated, highly profitable areas such as the Downtown Core (Keil, Roger, Young, 2008). In the article, Urban Form and Travel Behavior as Tools to Assess Sustainable Transportation in the Greater Toronto Area, the authors conclude that the GTA is headed in a negative direction, and that the goal of sustainable transportation will not be met or improved in the future under the current policies and trends. Overall, the symptoms of Church and Wellesley, although beneficial to the BIA locals, could be seen as a symptom of an greater problem with the city’s transit system that needs to be addressed through political, bureaucratic, and organizational reform ((Zaidan, Esmat, Abdelgadir, Abulibdeh,
Have you ever heard of the series "dumb ways to die"? It is all about train safety and how accidents caused by a lack of train safety are easily preventable. It is important to never drive around barriers, to drive to the other side just because you can't hear the train, and to take out headphones, turn down the radio, or take off your hood on your jacket when you come to a train
Public transportation is an essential part of a city. A good public transit can encourage a city’s economic activities and can provide its citizen a convenient life. Does our Phoenix public transit work well? Does it provide sufficient service to the citizen? From my experience, the answer is no. This November I tried to attend the popular State Fair in Phoenix. However, I found that there were not any buses or metros could take me to the fair directly. It means I need 2 hours or more spend on the public transits. As the sixth most populous city nationwide (“Phoenix Quick Fact” 1), compared with Los Angeles and other big cities in America, Phoenix’s public transportation is indeed subpar. Due to Los Angeles has 154 bus lines and 30 metros (“Schedule”), New York has 316 bus lines and 28 subways(“Maps & Timetables”), while Phoenix only has 98 bus lines, and the number of metro line is only one! (“Route Schedules & Maps”) The problem is
The primary purpose of pedestrian and bicyclist research is to reduce injuries and fatalities by better understanding the causes of pedestrian/bicyclist fatalities, by identifying and evaluating potential safety improvement measures, to foster public awareness of pedestrian and bicycle safety matters, and to provide resources for use at the national and local levels. There has been a plethora of research completed over the years concerning cycling and pedestrian safety. In the United States, society seems to overlook the problems with the current pedestrian, cyclist traffic and safety systems. The National Highway Society reports that the above is accurate and our society does face a significant problem with pedestrian and cyclist safety.
As it has been pointed out, rapid transit has many of benefits and it has been around for a long time now. I would classify it as the best way of transportation until now, particularly because of the fact that it is the fastest way to transport in a city. Also, if you are living with a minimum wage, it becomes the best option for you because it is low-priced. In my opinion, every city in the world should start using this kind of system because it has been proved that it would benefit a lot

Most people take the urban public transportation system for granted. It is used in every aspect of our daily lives: work, education, medical necessities, recreation, etc. It is also important for the transportation of goods and services, which aids the growth and maintenance of our economy. Urban public transportation is the critical component of our quality of life and economic stability. The MBTA, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, is Boston and Eastern Massachusetts’s major transportation service. The MBTA has played a central role in the development of Boston and surrounding cities and towns for more than a century; providing service from 175 cities and towns into Boston. On an average weekday over 1.2 million trips are made on the subway, buses, commuter lines and other services in the mass transit system. With an international airport, a ship port, the highways, and the rail lines to connect regional cities and towns to national and international destinations and markets, Boston’s urban public transportation system has made the region’s growing role in the global economy possible.
