‘Gallipoli’ is the story of a group of young Western Australian men who leave their homes to enlist in the first World War. They are sent to Gallipoli, where they misleadingly encounter the the Turkish army. The film is predicated throughout the time of World War I, in 1915. Archy Hamilton (actor Mark Lee), sets aside his dreams dreams to fight as a troop in the ‘Australian Horse Division’ within the war. As the film progresses, he runs into a friend, Frank (actor Mel Gibson), whom he successfully convinces to join up with him to fight in the war. Unable to enter the ‘Light Horse’, owing to his inability to ride, Frank is distributed to another army unit where her joins with some previous friends. Training commences, when Frank and Archy run into one another again, before they are sent to fight in the Gallipoli peninsula, where they will soon encounter the Turks. It’s at this point in the movie when the audience becomes aware that fighting in this war was not looking anything alike the expectations that Archy and his mates had previous to signing up. …show more content…

It also creates a very ‘real’ feel about the first World War, and explores many themes and character relationships while doing so. Archy and Frank are so close throughout the entire movie, and their friendship only grows stronger.
