Family types Structural and functional families were discussed throughout our readings and class discussions as they play a major part in Family Ministry. “The sociological study of the family has taken two different approaches to defining families—one begins with a structural definition based on the ways persons are related to one another biologically and/or legally; the other begins with a functional definition based on the ways persons relate to one another, or function in one another’s lives, in ways expected of family members.” There was an example given of a girl at church, who was adopted, who said she was special because her family chose her and had other options for children, whereas those who are born into families don’t have options of who they are related to. Understanding that structural and functional families are essential in Family Ministry is necessary for everyone. A personal experience, which comes to mind regarding structural and functional families for me was when one of my best friends told me how my mom had really touched her heart when we were at my son’s christening. The role of the church is to encourage, uplift, and keep the parents accountable for their family’s spirituality. The role of the parents is or should be the foundation for the child’s spirituality, the parents should be leading and teaching their children about the kingdom of God. The role of the pastor is similar to the role of the church, they should be a cheerleader for the family’s spiritual growth. The pastor should be hands on in counseling the family’s needs so that the family continues to growing on their spiritual track. In the last 20-30 years the church has been the foundation for spirituality and the parents have been taking their children to church and leaving it up to the church for their spiritual
