FRQ Essay 2: In the excerpt from Nisi Shawl’s novel “Everfair”, Lisette Toutournier’s overjoyed and exuberant reaction to riding her bicycle is depicted with compounding adjectives and visual imagery, which causes her to feel a sense of freedom and in turn self consciousness from the constricting French culture that she eventually is able to overcome and accept. As Lisette rides her bike through the streets and paths in rural France, she exhibits joyous and playful feelings, like many other kids that ride their bikes. Throughout the beginning the author uses descriptors like ‘marvelous air’, ‘intoxicating scent’, and where the road ‘laid itself out to her.’ These all imply that her experience of riding her bicycle is one that is addictive in a good way, it is something that allows her to feel the wind in her hair and face …show more content…

Along with that, the opening view of the landscape gives her a sense of accomplishment and grandeur where she is in control of her bike and her path, something that she may not have in normal society. This idea is further embedded into the story when her pedaling down the path is described as choppy and slippery, and that when she wobbles she catches herself and steers back on path, displaying yet again the command she seeks in her life. The excerpt also depicts Lisette’s flowing emotions from riding the bike, as depicted by the compounding adjectives that describe what she feels riding down. It talks about seeing “greenbrowngreengrey”, and feeling “coolwarmcoolwarm” and her being a “wild thing”. These images serve to show the fast and exciting nature of her bike ride as she
