In order to find out what influenced Friedrich Frobel we must first look at what education was like before him, his life and his childhood. After we find out about the man who created Kindergarten we must review his philosophy, and what tools he used to back it up. Then we will we will take a deeper look into who supported him. Finally we will examine how the life of Kindergarten education has evolved since.
Education before Frobel
While there have many great philosophers of our time the one that influenced Friedrich Froebel include; Comenius who in 1649 published a book about how children were born with a natural craving for knowledge and goodness and that school’s beat it out of them. He was also known as the father of modern education that tried to improve the way that students were taught. Next we have Rousseau who was one of the two main philosopher who inspired Froebel; in 1762 expounded a new theory of education that emphasized the importance of expression rather than repression to produce well-balanced, free-thinking children. He believed that by offering a child choices but controlling those choices exposed him to appropriate stimuli that would generate life experiences. While Froebel was not as inspired by his work, Fichte advocated a national system that would stimulated the desire for improving education by developing the individual for the benefit of the community, stimulate the individual into independent activity, and develop character and good will. The second man to have the most influence on Freidrich was Pestalozzi who had developed an educational training and curriculum innovations like group work, field trips, grade levels, ability grouping and allowing for individual differences. Jonathan Kozol, a writer best known for discussing public education, observed several specific schools in order to see how teachers aid young children into the future work force. Kozol believes young children in schools are being deprived of things they should be grasping at their age. Although this may be true, exposing children to real-life work responsibilities is clever and necessary in order to prepare them for the future while their brains are still growing and able to grasp the information easily.
He further stated that with all sincerity in themselves and colleagues, public school is now regarded as outmoded and barbarous. This thought, according to him is both observable to students and the teachers alike, but the students inhabit in it for a short period, while the teachers are condemned to it. It is evident that Gerald Graff’s article is bias because he avoids talking about acquiring academic intelligence through academic learning rather than non-academic ways. For instance, Graff shows bias when he generalizes our way of seeing educated life and academics. He said that, “We associate the educated life, the life of the mind, too narrowly and exclusively with subjects and texts that we consider inherently weighty and academic. We assume that it’s possible to wax intellectual about Plato, Shakespeare, the French Revolution, and nuclear fission, but not about cars, dating fashion, sports, TV, or video games.” (Graff 264-5). Herr and Paolo Freire are both influential philosophical authors who understand have somehow looked beyond the lines when it comes to education. Herr has learned more through personal experience while Freire hasn’t exactly discussed how he as acquired such knowledge, but is on the right track because he has similar attributes to Herr. This is why there are little stakes between choosing a theory over the other. However, there are some. While choosing Herr over Freire, students will have more of a wide-broad selection of freedom to explore the greatest depths of their imagination to become successful. However, not every student would be able to handle this well like Herr did in his college experience. Early childhood education, although constantly evolving, was actually established and practiced as early on as the times of Ancient Greece and Rome. The foundation that early childhood education is based upon is to instill in children the skills needed to succeed later on in life, while making sure young children enjoy their time in schooling. Throughout chapter 3 in the textbook Who Am I in the Lives of Children, the reader is capable of evaluating just how greatly the methods for teaching today’s youth have evolved and changed for the better.
Furthermore, Vygotsky declares that knowledge is constructed by social interactions with people who surround the child. The author also presents the concept of “zone of proximal development” as the distance between what children do without any supervision and what they are not able to achieve unless a more knowledgeable person guides them through it. In other words, the zone of proximal development refers to activities children cannot do, though they manage to fulfill with certain level of difficulty by following their better skilled fellows' suitable guidance. Going back to our text, it is mentioned that in 1920s, the emphasis was on physical and intellectual development, and the early education programs were based on the works and studies of Froebel, Montessori, and McMillan. But as education improved in late 1940s, the attention was to focus on physical, social, and emotional growth (Eliason, et al., 2008 p.5). So the creative curriculum has been based on the theories and researches that inform decision making in the early childhood field. In regards to child development, Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky are both highly regarded and well known for their theories. Some educators view themselves as Piagetian while others view themselves as Vygotskians. They see Piaget and Vygotsky as being vastly different. Then there are others who see similarities between the two and hold both Piaget and Vygotsky as correct in their theories. The purpose of this paper is to examine the similarities and differences between Piaget and Vygotsky and determine what can be gained by better understanding these theories.

There are various contemporary models of early education that have been constructed to help children develop their educational career. A few examples of these models are the Bank Street Approach, The Reggio Emilia Approach, The Montessori Approach, and the Head Start Program just to name a few. Preschool is the first step for the children to get their formal education, so it is important for the school to provide the children with the appropriate experience that accommodate the readiness among the children to get formal education in the primary level education. According to Kres (1993), Roger Shank mentions that learning at school in this day is an unnatural situation. Conversely, the learner must learn by doing, trying thing out, seeing how they work and exploring. At the same time when there is an error or failure, the learner should reflect and get the reason for the error or failure. On the other hand, possible leading question can be given to the learner so that they can identify the reasons for the error or failure, and this kind of learning is a natural way of learning (Kres, 1993).
My observation at the elementary school gave me a better understanding of the behavioral and cognitive characteristics that are typical of middle childhood. I saw how highly they value the stability given by rules, and the ways in which they interact among the social structures. I also noticed the seven year old boy have incredible self-control and the way his friends empathized with him afterwards. Finally, I witnessed the behavioral aspect of Piaget’s concrete operational stage in action.
Moreover, Froebel theory is similar to Rousseau theory that the child should learn in nature. In addition, Froebel wants to teach teachers to be sensitive to child 's willingness and needs. Moreover, the kindergarten should have materials that the child could shape: clay, sand, cardboard, and sticks that will let the child use their imagination to build things like a castle.
