Art has been around humanity for thousands of years. For example, during the time that humans lived in caves, they painted animals on the cave walls and would also leave their handprint. In Europe, there was a cultural movement called the Renaissance that had influence in literature, music, and art. Art is a form of an escape from the harsh realities that some people face every day. Like writing, art is an outlet to express any type of emotions such as happiness, sadness, and anger. The greatest thing about art is that anything can be seen as art. For example, a portrait of a person smiling or a poem that is about a person that went through a very traumatic event. Some artist painted for pleasure but others paint because it represents their deep emotions. One of the famous artists who used her pain to paint was Frida Kahlo, who embodies the idea of an artistic genius. Many of Kahlo’s self-portraits were influenced by her painful experiences and her terrible marriage. Her first self-portrait, The Broken Column, represented the devastation to her body from the bus accident. She is depicted nearly naked, split down the middle, with her spine presented as a broken decorative column. Her skin is dotted with nails and is fitted with a surgical brace. After her divorce from Rivera, Kahlo painted Self Portrait with Cropped Hair. Kahlo is depicted in a man's suit, holding a pair of scissors, with her fallen hair around the chair in which she sits.
