Romeo and Juliet Essay Everyone's definition of a tragedy is different. Some may say it is just a sad event. Others may say that it is a dreadful disaster. When William Shakespeare wrote this play, his idea of a tragic event was the death of two star-crossed lovers. The feud between the Capulets and the Montagues is a main cause of a tragedy that occurs in the story. The main characters known as Friar Lawrence, Nurse, and Mercutio all play an extremely important role in the play Romeo and Juliet. Because Friar Lawrence was so close to Romeo and Juliet, his actions made a great impact. The Friar was known has a holy and well-respected man in the city of Verona. His fatherly role towards Romeo and Juliet helped highlight the main conflict between the parents and their children. “For this alliance may so happy probe to turn your households’ rancor to pure love.” (Scene 2, Act 3, 97, 99) He helped the two lovers with any situation they needed. The nurse was Juliet’s guardian and mother figure. She always looked out for her well being. The nurse herself had a child and a husband at one time but they both passed away so she considered Juliet as her only family. Which made them even closer. The Nurse's main function during the play was to act as a go-between for Romeo and Juliet. As the play progresses and Juliet tells her about Romeo, the nurse tried to convince her that he was a no-good and that she should marry Count Paris. “I think it best you married with the County. O, he's a lovely gentleman. Romeo's a dishclout to him. (Act 3, scene 5, 218-220) This made Juliet feel as if she could no longer trust the nurse, who was one of the only people who knew about their secret love.
